In the first chapter you get a really good clue about how over her head Cara is. She had it right that she was better in research than she was out in the field. But pretty soon, she isn’t going to have much of a choice about that. She is kind of quirky with some pretty funny self-talk. That would be muttering under her breath. She also has a very sensible side that argues with her sassy, not so logical side. Oh, and she says she also has a Princess side too. What an imagination this gal has. She can terrify herself all by herself with it.
Actually felt like as a reader I knew more about Cara than I did Henry.
Henry seemed to not have a lot to say and kept his information close to himself. Several times described as a very large, handsome man with icy blue eyes, whose emotions seldom showed on his face. He also responded (when he did) with a nod or a grunt. There are several times though that Cara begins to get behind his wall. She sees a small, twitch of his lips that passed for a smile. Or at least she thinks so.
There is humor in the story because look who were are dealing with…Cara. There is intense drama too. The car chase alone was super intense and edge of your seat reading.
I did have some mixed feelings about this story. There were some times when the story seemed to slow and didn’t give much insight into much personality for Henry. There is also several people that I would have liked to have seen face consequences. However, the main crooks did. I finally decided that 4 Stars on Amazon was the right rating. Cara and Henry being stalked was well done and the car chase scenes alone definitely deserved it. It was so real I could almost taste the wind and the danger as they raced to escape.
Everything comes to a dramatic conclusion with SEVERAL surprises heading at us like a runaway train.
There is a good Epilogue that is a whole lot calmer in nature. .
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
I had a little difficulty getting into this book as I found Cara was a little too naive and juvenile for me but she did redeem herself in the second half of the story. This book read more like an adrenaline packed adventure since there were several nail biting scenes involving a car chase and a roaring river and only one intimate scene that was mildly steamy. Even though this is told in only Cara’s POV, there is no mistaking Henry’s romantic interest. It is only when you get to the end, that you understand the author’s choice in writing only in Cara’s POV. An enjoyable read.
I received a copy from Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.
Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters #2, This was such a fun read. I like that it gives you a brief recap at the beginning of the book to catch you up if you haven’t read the first one or just a refresher if you have. Cara is not a skip trace like her other sisters she prefers the research when she’s not studying to become a teacher but with the crap going on with her mom and two of her sisters concentrating their efforts on finding her she tries to help out unfortunately she just gets herself into danger. Accused murder Henry Kavenski is the skip she decides will bring in enough money to help support the family, but she soon realizes she is in way over her head and decides to drop it for one a little less violent crime related but even then it turns out not to be as easy as she thinks.
Henry spots Cara her first day of following him and when he catches her trying to break in to his hotel room he thinks she’s properly scared off but when she accidentally sits down at his booth in a sleazy bar tracking someone else down he warns her that there is more to that case than she thinks. Following her to return something as inconsequential as a bottle of aspirin may not have been smart but he had to make sure she dropped looking for the other skip. In doing so he might have just put her in more danger.
Cara gets kidnapped and thankfully Henry shows up when he did and saves her even if they end up driving the car off the road and have to trek two day through the cold mountains before they get to a town all the while dodging bad guys. Overall, it was a great read. I loved the twist at the end, I was hoping it would be something like that and I’m glad the story worked out the way it did. Katie Ruggle is an auto buy for me as soon as I see the paperback in the store it goes in my cart. I always enjoy her characters, Cara is sweet and stronger than she thinks, Henry is a strong silent type (my favorite). Ruggle ties humor in so well with the action. The entire story was enjoyable.
This is a great addition to the previous book about the these five bounty hunting sisters in the rocky mountains and if you haven’t read In her Sights then make sure you do you won’t be disappointed and we are introduced to these sisters in the turn the tide anthology Do yourself a favour and read them all
Cara is the quite member of the family the one who does the behind the scenes work but she knows she needs to step it up if they are to save the family business So she decides to head out after a skip problem is she isn’t really qualified to take him down. and Henry Kavenski catches her in his room. Henry has been accused of a murder he didn’t commit. Can he prove his innocence while continually having to pull Cara out of the trouble she gets herself into and what about the simmering sexual tension between them Will they get a HEA You will have to read to see
I enjoyed the second half better than the first half. The characters were fun, though I had Henry worked out with no surprises. The beginning of the book was more comical and the second half became action and suspense. All round an entertaining read.
Risk It All is the second book in Katie Ruggle’s Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters series. I thought the first book was great fun and figured this book would be more of the same, but it wasn’t…it was even more fun, a non-stop thrill ride! Reading this was like watching an exciting action film, but better. (Because we all know books are always better than the movie!)
Cara Pax is in the bounty hunter business with her four sisters; however, she really doesn’t want to be a part of the family business, as she is studying to be a kindergarten teacher. Her family desperately needs money or else they will lose their beloved home, so Cara decides to forgo her usual research role and bring in an actual bounty. She decides to pursue Henry Kavenski, who is accused of two murders but says he is innocent. When she is caught by him breaking into his motel room, she decides she needs to go after easier – and safer – bounty. She chooses to go after a tax evader instead, which isn’t a safer choice. Henry, who is at the same bar that Cara is staking out, saves her life when a car attempts to mow her down in the parking lot. When Cara’s life is endangered due to her contact with Henry, the two go on the run, pursued by real killers.
Though this book has an abundance of action, it is once again Ms. Ruggle’s enchanting characters who drive the story. Cara seems to be a lot more innocent than her kick-ass sisters; but when she begins to believe that Henry truly is innocent, she finds out she is much braver than she ever imagined she was. Henry is a strong, silent mountain of a man, but he is quietly charmed by quirky Cara. Their romance is slow burning, but when it ignites it’s both steamy and funny. I found myself both laughing aloud and getting misty-eyed. Cara’s sisters don’t have large roles in this installment, but their love and support for each other is obvious even when they aren’t together. This has quickly become one of my favorite series, and I am beyond impatient already waiting for Norah’s story!
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Risk It All is the second novel in Katie Ruggle’s Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters series, and while I wasn’t a fan of the first novel in the series, In Her Sights, giving it only 2 stars, I decided to give this series a second try and requested an advance reader copy. Happily, it was a huge improvement over In Her Sights and I found it impossible to put this one down, reading it cover-to-cover until 5:00 a.m., and it gets 5 stars from this reader.
This series features the five Pax sisters, whose grab-it-and-go, disreputable mother stole a $2 million dollar necklace, got arrested, put their house up as collateral to get out on bail and skipped town, even though the sisters were the house’s true owners and had made all the payments on it, the shady bail bondsman is now blackmailing the sisters. There are people constantly breaking into their home, believing that the necklace is hidden there (it isn’t). Even worse, the bail bondsman their mother used is one shady, manipulative character, and he’s blackmailing the sisters. If they don’t chase down and capture his bail jumpers, he’ll sell their house out from under them. Two of the sisters are busy trying to track down their bail jumping mother, two are committed to tracking other bail jumpers by doing on-line research, and leaving only one sister who is actively trying to catch bail jumpers to earn enough money to pay for food, and pay their bills. Admittedly, the premise for this series is a bit out there, but in this novel, it all starts to make a strange kind of sense.
Cara, one of the research sisters, hasn’t done any fieldwork at all, and is feeling guilty because she’s not contributing much to their business, and their survival. Without mentioning it to her sisters, she decides to try her hand at nabbing a skip, and she doesn’t start small. Instead, she decides to go after the skip that will earn her the most reward money, notorious accused murderer and major hunk, Henry Kavinski, and she’s been spending her time following him around town, eventually deciding to pick his lock when she’s sees him leave, but we soon learn that he’s been aware that she’s been following him all along, and he sets a trap for her. However, when he catches Cara in the act of breaking in, he doesn’t harm her at all, instead, he let’s her go, warning her to stay away from him, but Cara is not easily deterred, and she’s nothing if not persistent. Henry soon comes to her rescue and saves her life as she leaves her stakeout at Dutch’s Bar, only to have a speeding car come barreling towards her in the parking lot. It’s incongruous to Cara that Henry would risk his own life to save hers, especially since he knows she’s trying to bring him in for the reward money, but because he saved her at great risk to himself, she can’t believe that he’s a cold-blooded killer, or deny her attraction to him.
During Cara’s next attempt to bring in another seemingly less dangerous skip than Henry, she ends up getting kidnapped, drugged, and left in a dingy cabin in the middle of nowhere, her arms and legs zip-tied, and even though she does manage to eventually free herself from the zip ties, it’s Henry to the rescue again, and that’s just for starters, because Ms. Ruggle has written one of the most exciting, death-defying, and high-gear chase sequences I’ve read in years, and, combined with the slow building attraction between these two seemingly mismatched characters., it’s soon obvious that someone is trying to kill both of them, and thanks to Ms. Ruggle’s sense of the absurd circumstances, Henry’s valiant attempts to get them both to safety, and Cara’s quirky sense of humor, it all worked for this reader.
While billed as romantic suspense, there’s far more suspense than romance in this novel, but there is no denying the attraction and chemistry between these two characters, nor is there any doubt that Ms. Ruggle can write one heck of a suspenseful, exciting and dangerous novel, and lighten up the action with some comedy, sex, and affection. Even though this novel works fine as a standalone, I do recommend reading the first book in the series to get a handle on the dynamics of the relationships between the 5 sisters, and the background information on their relationship with their mother, as well as how they reluctantly became bounty hunters. The next novel in the series will feature Norah Pax, and I’m eagerly looking forward to reading it.
As stated, I read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
Cara does not want to follow in the family business, which is bounty hunters.
She is better at the back end part of business.
(Background checks, etc …)
However, to help her sisters, she decided to apprehend one criminal that did not show up for his bail hearing.
That is the start of all of her problems.
Instead of catching the bounty, the bounty catches Cara.
Henry is innocent, and he is is trying to prove is innocence.
He should be trying to dodge Cara, instead of protecting her.
What is Henry to do ?
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
This series is fast becoming a favourite! The Pax sisters are funny, fierce and all about distancing themselves from their mother…all whilst making sure they find her before she skips out on her court date!
Cara is the woman least likely to be a bounty hunter! She wants to concentrate on college and her dream job in Education. She can’t leave her sisters holding the bag though. She decides to spread her wings and take on more of the high value skips, leaving her usual research role behind. However, she did not expect to come face to face with another Most Wanted while tracking down her original quarry. More worrying she didn’t expect him to save her!
Henry has been labelled as a cold blooded killer but he is determined to investigate and reinstate his previous good reputation. If he could only get a certain bounty hunter out of his mind. Working together is only going to lead to trouble…of the romantic kind.
I loved this. It kind of reminded me of an old fashioned Hepburn/Tracy movie. Henry is a brilliant leading man. Cara may be naive but she isn’t an idiot and I loved that she was passionate about her education and her family, she just doesn’t want that life for herself.
Great read, superb characters and slow burn romance with plenty of tense action!
This is the second story featuring Rocky Mountain bounty hunting sisters. Cara Pax is the sister least likely to go after a big skip. She is in school to be a kindergarten teacher and does research for her sisters who do the fieldwork. But as things keep getting tighter due to her mother’s transgressions, Cara decides to try to help out more in the field.
Her first attempted skip turns out to be a big, burly fascinating man named Henry Kavenski who happens to be accused of murder. He had every opportunity to punish her for her amateur stalking and even breaking and entering. But as their paths seem to keep crossing, she just cannot shake the fact that she does not believe he is a cold-blooded killer. And the fact that he seems to keep coming to her rescue seals the deal.
He is resourceful, protective, and there when she needs him. She is plucky, smart, tenacious, and being pushed out of her comfort zone. He has secrets and a shady history that should bother her. And he should be concerned that her original intent (and that of her family would be) to bring him in for bail money.
But someone is out to get them, either due to her family, her other investigation, or his past. And now they are in it together for better or worse. Cara is getting a crash course in the dangers of bounty hunting and hanging out with the seedier part of the world. Henry is getting a glimpse into what it feels like to have someone believe in him. They have each other’s back in a host of hazardous situations, but they will have to escape all the trouble following them if they want a chance to make it out alive.
There is a lot of on-the-run action versus relationship development, but I did like both of them and felt they had chemistry. This brings back her four sisters, Charlie, Felicity, Norah, Molly, and her boyfriend, John, and throws in a few antagonists. It is full of suspense, danger, action, and some twists. There are some humorous scenes and a fish-out-of-water element due to Cara being inexperienced in the field. And in between all the danger and drama, there is an unlikely love story, personal growth, and redemption. There is still an ongoing story arc continuing throughout the series, though each book focuses on one couple. Next up seems to be sister, Norah.
I love this series! this is the 2nd book in this bounty hunting family and is mainly about Cara and her bounty Henry. She is a funny and strong personality keeps you on your toes reading her story. Henry is trying to prove he is innocent and falling in love at the same time. He is in protective mode when he realizes Cara is the one for him and that she believes he is innocent. a very descriptive book made you see everything clearly in your mind a rare talent . Had a surprising twist in the book. a great read.
Cara is the sweet sister who doesn’t really get physically involved in the family Bounty business but instead helps by doing background checks in between studying to be a teacher. Still after the mess their mother left them in Cara is determined to do more to help and decides to track down a dangerous man who hasn’t returned for his bail hearing but getting caught by him trying to get into his motel room is just the start of Cara’s problems !
Ok I’m going to be blunt and say I wasn’t impressed initially by Cara as she came across as juvenile and pretty much acted like a teenager with a really pathetic crush ! However yes there’s a but coming I soon realised that as part of a large family she was perhaps just a little more quirky than I expected considering she’s about to become an educator and when things go downhill fast she really impressed me . Now naturally we have a hero and his name is Henry and he is gruff, pretty much the strong silent type and actually also adorable and I want a Henry of my own ! The action was non stop and so intense that I almost wanted to read from behind my hands which should let you know just how much hot or not water this couple get into ! Fabulous characters and simply a very entertaining story so an easy five from me.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Risk It All is a phenomenal romantic suspense by Katie Ruggle. Ms. Ruggle has provided readers with a well-written book. I love the characters in this book! Cara and her sisters are bounty hunters. Cara usually works on research but feels the need to bring in some skips on her own to help her sisters. Henry Kavenski is a murder suspect and has skipped but Cara is on his trail. Cara and Henry’s story is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. I enjoyed every word of this book and look forward to reading more from Katie Ruggle in the future. Risk It All is part of the Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I had such fun with this book and Cara is going on my favorite heroine’s list. She was sweet, adorable, and little bit of quirky. She also had a great attitude no matter what situation she was in. I’m usually all about the heroes but she was just as good as he was in this.
Henry is the strong, silent type. He only showed hints of a smile when Cara would be cute with him. He seemed to get attached to her quickly and was very protective of her. I really adored these two. There is nothing better than finding a book where I loved both main characters.
Despite how drawn these two were together, this is a very slow burn. Mainly because there was a lot of action in this storyline. Cara seemed to get into trouble pretty quickly and often, and Henry spent a lot of his time protecting her.
I have not read the first book, which I am definitely going back and do, but I’m wondering if there is more information on the mom’s situation in book one. There is enough mentioned in this one to not leave you lost though.
Fun read!
You wouldn’t think the story starring the sister studying to become a kindergarten teacher would be an adrenaline filled thrill ride but it is. This story is filled with action, adventure and danger. I loved it. This story had me holding my breath and crossing my fingers. Our unlikely heroine bagged the biggest bad a$$ of them all.
