Avery Dacosta never expected to find a protester in front of her office.Especially not now, when she’s this close to achieving a professional milestone years in the making: building a luxury hotel on Playa Vieja, San Diego’s untouched beach paradise.Finn Travis, local surfer and all-around nice guy, never expected to find himself the leader of Playa Vieja’s resistance. He’s more of a mellow … more of a mellow tree-hugger than a radical activist. Except Avery’s hotel threatens to destroy the place he loves the most. For the first time in his life, Finn decides to use his charisma for more than just attracting his next fling.
Avery’s worked too hard to let a bongo-playing hippie like Finn shatter her perfect future. And his naive idealism grates on her every nerve.
She’s not alone in her loathing: Finn thinks Avery is a greedy, corporate robot.
As Avery and Finn crash together like waves against the shore, their debates become heated. Sexy. Dirty.
But the riptide of their attraction jeopardizes more than just their ideological values. Can Avery and Finn be together without giving up what they care about the most?

Riptide by Kathryn Nolan is a contemporary, slow burn, enemies to lovers romance told in first person, dual POV.
Finn Travis – pro surfer, model, and environmentalist – lives in the untouched beach paradise of Playa Vieja, San Diego.
Avery Dacosta – capitalist, workaholic, and hotel developer – has plans to build a luxury hotel there.
When Finn finds out about the project, he’s determined to do something to stop it and begins a protest that meets daily outside of Avery’s workplace. As they face off on a regular basis, getting under each other’s skin, their chemistry sparks and ignites. Finn and Avery discover that despite their opposing viewpoints, they have very much in common. Will Finn’s protest succeed in stopping the project? Will Avery succeed in developing the hotel? Can they find a way to meet in the middle?
I loved Avery and Finn’s love story! As characters, they were both well-developed, realistic, and likeable. Their banter was super fun and their chemistry was scorching hot. I enjoyed how they balanced and brought out the best in each other. The setting was so vivid and well-written, I could picture everything as if I was there. I enjoyed how the author tackled both sides of the development/environment issue skillfully and without being heavy-handed. The story had a brilliant blend of humor, depth, romance, and steamy scenes. I highly recommend it.
I loved Finn and Avery. I loved this story of 2 people who are are different sides of a situation but are more alike then they realize. Kathryn Nolan writes great characters who are true to themselves and you totally see that in this book. Yet for Avery and Finn, the connection that is created is so well written and kept me wanting more of them!
The enemies to lovers trope has never been hotter or more satisfying!
I’m a huge fan of the enemies to lovers trope as long as it’s well-written, well-motivated, and well-resolved. Finn and Avery’s relationship slow burn from enemies to lovers to partners is among the best there is. As someone who struggles with rampant, unchecked capitalism, it’s like this book was written for just me.
Nolan has gift when comes to creating characters that readers care about. Both Avery and Finn are unique, beautifully drawn people–complete with flaws. They not only grow as a couple, but they grow as individuals over the course of the story. And without giving anything away, I truly appreciate the way the central conflict was resolved.
The author also excels at slow burn to intense heat. This book easily makes my Top Five Reads of the Year list. I don’t often re-read books, but I know I’ll definitely re-read this one more than once. Grab your own copy of Riptide–you won’t be sorry!
This book was recommended by a friend and I am so glad that I decided to pick it up! I love a good opposites attract, enemies to lovers story!!!
Avery is a typical Type A… goal focused, independent, and driven. Finn appears to be a typical surfer… a bit of a slacker, flying by the seat of his pants, and super laid back. When these two go toe to toe over building a hotel in Finn’s beloved hometown, not only do sparks fly but they also begin to realize that they’re not really opposites after all.
I devoured this book!! This story was worth every second of sleep I sacrificed to finish reading it. I was connected to the characters and while I couldn’t put it down, I never wanted it to end. I can’t recommend this book enough to every person who asks what to read next!
Great writing!
I found the story line captivating and the protagonists intriguing and their character depths very well developed. I enjoyed this book during my vacation and would definitely recommend as a great relaxing beach read. Or snowed in at the lodge read, or, ultimately as a beautiful story that you can enjoy anytime, anywhere!
Amazing story!
Love, love, love this book!!!! Avery and Finn are so hot, sexy, and just amazing!! The “hippie” vs the “capitalist.” Both are smart, funny, and interesting. However, they just have very different, or opposing views about the development of a big hotel in their beach community. I loved their little verbal sparring matches, and the two of them together have chemistry for days!! Loved it!
Riptide is so different from Cuffed and Strictly Professional and I really enjoyed that. Avery and Finn are two passionate people and on opposite sides when it comes to a hotel that’s going to get built if the voting passes.
This enemies to lovers romance was so much fun. Yes, they’re enemies when it comes to the case about the hotel but they’re great to take the gloves off outside of work and when they do their chemistry really shines.
Finn is such a hottie. A surfer with so much heart and brains to match. Avery a fierce individual who wants to succeed with her work. When they come across one another sparks fly and they slowly get to know more about one another that the hotel is slowly taking a backseat. Kathryn Nolan is a new to me author and her books have heart and soul. I’m addicted.
4 Satan and Hippie Stars
Blissed out
Finn: sexy hot surfer hippie environmentalist dude. Avery: capitalist satanic driven uptight workaholic. Nothing in common on the surface, and yet they burn the town down with their smoldering. Finn and Avery are passionately fighting on opposing sides to a very complex issue, and they are very complex characters, no easy road for them, no easy answers; I could not see how they would ever resolve their issues. The story unfolded steadily, though; with Finn and Avery slowly discovering they’re not as different as they appear. With a few brilliantly well placed surprises, Kathryn Nolan brings together two beautifully written characters; worshipping each other in the only place that matters to them both. I found so much to love about this book-it was sweet, sexy, complex, funny, sad, happy, surprising, with the best HEA! And I can’t leave without a word about Finn, my perfect hero. A growly alpha wrapped up in a laid back surfer vibe. I love him!
