She can save his ranch… But can he forgive her? Maya Burton knows she’s the last person rancher Caleb Dunne wants to see. After all, she survived the crash that killed his sister, and then left town. Now she has to convince the stubborn cowboy that she can help him save his ranch. But once she earns his trust–and his heart–will she be able to walk away?
What a great story about coming home, letting go and starting over. Very realistic how a tragic accident can have a ripple effect on everyone it touched.
Maya was such an interesting character, abandoned to foster care by her parents and then raised by her grandmother until a tragic accident sent her running away and changing her life forever. She also had an interesting job, a PHD and was on a two month assignment for the Department of Wildlife trying to find pumas in Shelter Creek, California. I enjoyed seeing a female in a role that I would think has more males. I enjoyed learning all about the pumas. I also thought it was very interesting to see how Maya’s life paralleled that of the pumas.
Caleb Dunne regrets his 17 year old self telling Maya to go and that he blamed her for his sister’s death. He is suffering from PTSD as he was over in Afghanistan. It was interesting to see Caleb hit rock bottom before he could try to turn his life around and be worthy of Maya. I liked that Caleb and Maya helped themselves first and then helped each other.
What a great character Maya’s grandmother was too. She supported her granddaughter and later found ways for her granddaughter to let go of the past. It was fun watching the antics of the book club ladies.
I enjoyed watching as the book club rallied behind Maya and the whole town rallied behind Caleb. The story came full circle which was a great part of the story. It was also interesting to learn about the pumas and ways for the ranchers to safeguard their sheep. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
An awesome story that tears at your heart strings a time or two or three maybe more. When the story starts Maya wants to head home after being gone for years thinking something was wrong with her grandmother. The reason she thought this was her grandmother had been coming to see her all the time so she didn’t have to go home and face her past.
Maya is a biologist her works in the field and studies wild life and their habitats. She gets a short term assignment that forces her to go back to her hometown and allows her a chance to make sure her Grandmother is fine.
When she gets to her grandmothers house, she camps out for a couple of days and then goes home to shower and runs into the Book Biddies. A group of ladies that meet at her Grandmothers and discuss books they have read. This month’s read was Fifty Shades.
The book keeps you on the edge of your seat, it makes you laugh, then at times it makes you want to cry. But the storytelling is awesome and you are right there with the characters every step of the way. A truly awesome book that you really don’t want to miss.
This is a wonderful, Inspirational story of how sorrow, grief and forgiveness can change lives. A great start to a new series, I sure hope the rest are this good.
Maya Burton and Caleb Dunne were high school sweethearts 13 years ago. They thought they would be together forever. Until, Caleb’s sister Julie and her best friend Trisha get drunk at a party and call for a ride home. Caleb instead of going himself calls Maya to pick them up there is a accident and Julie is killed.
Trisha is badly injured. Everyone in town blames Maya, and rumor’s start that she was drunk and causes it.
Caleb is devastated by the loss of his sister and turns on Maya calling her names even murderer.
His guilt getting the best of him. The whole town knows Maya came to live with her Granda Lillian, from foster care after her Drug Addict parents lost her. After the accident Maya leaves town for collage with a broken heart. She is now working with Department of Wildlife tracking and studying large cats.
Caleb’s whole life changed after losing Julie. His folks could not deal with the loss, each going there own way.
Both moved out of town. Caleb joined the military and was sent to Afghanistan.
Now that both or back with too many memories, and feelings . How they learn to work together and learn about each other is truly amusing . What each has to learn to forgive and accept the other if they will get a second chance. Can love win over a past filled with so much sorrow and grief. With the help of Grandma Lillian’s group of fiends called the Biddies, Caleb’s best friend Jace (who is a new foster parent to his nieces and nephew) and the town just about anything can happen and does..
A story you will not forget soon, and if like me will re read a number of times.
This is a clean story so any age can read and learn from it.
Grab a copy, find a good chair cause you will not want to stop till the end..
I received and ARC from the author and this is my option.
Such an emotional read! They were high school sweethearts with the world at their feet … until tragedy struck and life as they knew it fell apart. Claire McEwen found her footing in the Heartwarming line with no problem at all with this first book in her new Heroes of Shelter Creek series! The characters both have a side of story that you can understand and relate to, but the heartbreak they both are still feeling after all of these years makes it a really emotional story. The author did a fantastic job of telling from each point of view and delivering a heart-wrenching story of finding their way back to each other. Really enjoyed Maya and Caleb and look forward to more in this series!
Department of Wildlife biologist Maya Burton hasn’t been home in more than a dozen years. She left Shelter Creek when her world fell apart and tried not to look back. Now that her grandmother is aging and can’t travel to her, she takes a short term assignment close to home so she can check in on her. Once she hears who else is back in town, she’s sure he’s not going to be receptive to her arrival.
Rancher Caleb Dunne spent more than a decade in the Marine’s after losing his sister and lashing out at Maya for surviving. He’s finally come home, but the ranch as he knew it is no more and he’s struggling every step of the way as he tries to turn things around and make a go of it again. He’s not happy to see Maya back in town and trying to give him feedback on what he’s doing wrong. He has to admit that once he gets past the initial jab of anger, it’s easier to see her … and he even finds himself remembering the good times.
I have always loved westerns–when I was a little girl, my whole family watched the great TV westerns together–we were all fans. As I got older, I realized how appealing and romantic cowboys are–if you win the heart of a cowboy, you’re a lucky woman indeed! Author Claire McEwen begins her “Heroes of Shelter Creek series: with “Reunited with the Cowboy”–a richly- detailed story with a beautiful setting and very appealing characters. After years spent in service in the Marines, Caleb Dunne returned home to the family ranch in Shelter Creek, California. Working hard to preserve the heritage of the ranch and secure its future, he must accept help from a an unexpected and unwanted source. Years ago. Maya Burton and Caleb Dunne were high-school sweethearts–very much in love–until the aftermath of a tragic accident drove them apart. Maya left the area after graduation and became a wildlife biologist. Coming home to Shelter Creek to visit her grandmother means coming face-to-face with Caleb–and facing the heartbreak of the past. Maya has the knowledge and training to help Caleb and other ranchers in the area, but will he open his heart, and his mind, and trust her to help him hold on to his family’s legacy? After spending time again with Caleb, will Maya be able to walk away and return to the life she has created outside Shelter Creek? “Reunited with the Cowboy” is highly recommended for lovers of heartfelt contemporary western romance.

This was a second chance romance. Both Maya and Caleb are broken after his sister dies in accident while Maya was driving. He drowns his nightmares from this and the military in a bottle while trying to save his family’s ranch. Maya ran away but is back to teach the people of Shelter Creek how to keep predators like mountain lions away from their livestock without killing them. I learned a lot of cool facts about wildlife. I would love to visit a wildlife center and learn more about ways to peacefully coexist.
A romance that can tug at your heart at times. Maya Burton was madly in love with Caleb Dunne. One tragedy would turn their lives upside down. Both ended up going their separate ways until Maya’s job puts her back in Caleb’s path. In helping his ranch against predators they must work together. The characters stories will tug at your heart strings and make you root for love in the end for Maya and Caleb.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
This was just an intriguing story. I felt for both Caleb and Maya. Young lovers that were broken apart by an accident. Maya was driving the car that killed Caleb’s sister Julie. Many believed that Maya was drunk thus losing control of her car. Caleb is distraught at the loss and in his anger, he tells Maya to leave and he never wants to see her again.
Caleb joins the Marine and serves for 10 years. He now has more demons that he has to face beside the ultimate of destroying his relationship with Maya. Maya makes a home in Colorado and earns a PhD in wildlife biology. She is sent back to Shelter Creek when several ranchers suffer losses due to mountain lions attacking their herds.
When Caleb and Maya meet up again after a decade apart, the conflict begins all over again. They try to overcome the past and return Bar D ranch (Caleb’s ranch) back into one of the finest in the area after it has fallen onto hard times since Julie’s death.
These two wonderful characters are so broken on the inside. Can they overcome their past to let their love reconnect and grow again? This and several other issues arise in this story that kept me glued to my e-reader. I felt a connection with both of these characters. The author wrote in such a manner that just drew me into the Shelter Creek world and the plight that Caleb and Maya face.
I so appreciated the dual POV format. Getting into both characters’ thought processing really helped me to identify with them. I could really understand their positions on the subject in the plot.
I really felt one with the story. I really felt like I was there right in the middle of the story. I so look forward to more in this series. I hope that Jace (Caleb’s best friend) is next.
I highly recommend this story to anyone.
Reunited with the Cowboy is a great start to a new series! Maya’s job is interesting and I enjoyed reading about the work she does to help the mountain lions and ranchers. I really love the residents of Shelter Creek, especially Maya’s Grandma Lillian and The Book Biddies! I hope they are included in the next book in this series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary Advance Reader Copy.
