The 4th book in this series does not disappoint. Fel (I am shortening his name) truly does come full circle. Finally, accepting who he is being half Apline and being half Silvan, as well as something else. As well as coming to know himself and his purpose. Together with the company his brother Handir, who he has become extremely fond of, as well as Lyn (also shortening her name) who he pretty much, marries travels back home to stop the mounting civil war.
Along the way shadows and other hired assassins try to kill Fel much like in book 3. It is a whirlwind of an adventure of trying to stop a secret coup de ta from happening and a civil war all orchestrated by Brand’oren. Who is the brother of the 1st king and uncle to the current king. In book 4 we finally get a deeper introspective look on why Brand’oren is doing the things that he is doing and well as what motivates him. Trauma, jealousy, and inferiority are what drives Brand’oren to take the throne by any means necessary. Even if that means killing his own family.
However, with Fel and the company reaching the forest where the silvans made camp and Prince Handir and Commanders Gorsa and Pan reaching the capital, Unfortunately, Fel gets betrayed by some Silvan and gets kidnapped as well and is taken to the same place that the king is being held. Everyone is racing against time to find the king who has been kidnapped and try to prove that their uncle is a treacherous backstabbing snake in the grass while also trying to oust other people for treason as well. With an old journal being the key.
In the end, a major fight goes down, some people are outed for treason and I recommend getting the book to find out exactly what happens. And if you haven’t already got the 1st 3 books while you are at it as well, they are all a great read.
An absolute blockbuster of a book that deserves much more than the maximum of 5 stars. It seems impossible that the author R.K. Lander could write a book even better than book 3 ( Dawn of a Legend (The Silvan, #3) ), but she has. It is fast-paced and action-packed, with a beautiful complexity of layers – of interlocking plot threads and emotional connections. The reader is drawn in and immersed in the thick of the action and adventure, feels deeply for every character and is left thoroughly satisfied by the end of the book. You will be ready to read the entire book again the moment you finish, it is so good.
The book officially releases on May 27, 2020. This is a beta reader review.
(Disclaimer) I received an advance copy of R.K. Lander “Return of a Warlord” and was totally captured by her literary weaving…that I forgot (as an advanced reader) to look for grammatical errors. If you are looking to escape and unwind for a couple of hours…highly recommend this book.
