One story. Two couples.
I proposed on our first date. She laughed and told me I was insane. Less than a day later, she said yes.It was a whirlwind, but we were happy… money we didn’t have. Lied to our families. Smiled for our friends. Put on a brave face for a world that didn’t understand.
Finally, we were successful…
Until we were forced to bury our son.
We were left broken, battered, and destroyed.
They say love is in the details, but it was the details that ruined us.
This is the story of how I took back what had always been mine.
The retrieval of my wife and our family.

Did t expect so much sex and foul language
I only gave this 2 stars due to the language and the descriptive sex. Those two things do not appeal to me……… When the book ended, it needed another couple of chapters to end it properly. I was disappointed to say the least.
Great book, I really enjoyed it, much more than I could expect, it was full of love and despair. There’s action, suspense and passion in this story, and to be honest the end kept me wanting for more, so yes I’ll be counting the days until I could read the continuation. A must read definitely if you love second chances.
As you know, this is part one of a duet. However, the word duet means something complete different than what it normally does. You see normally, this would mean the story that began in book one would continue to book two for a happy ending. Well, surprise LOL because what duet REALLY means is we have two separate stories connected by a very small degrees. But those degrees are EVERYTHING!
Retrieval is very much the story of Roman and Elisabeth getting their life back, but it is also the beginning of Clare’s story, intertwined and laced with their journey, which will continue in Transfer .. #phenomenal This world with these characters I just read is ALL THE THINGS!!
This book is ridiculously captivating. It warmed my heart as much as it broke my heart. It’s amazingly suspenseful but yet not mysterious. The Aly Martinez touch with characterization and voice sings true with every word. And the ending, or as some would say cliffhanger … WELL FUCKING PLAYED!! You got me! I will be holding my breath until I can get my hands on part two! #TRUST

That ending! So glad I only read duets, once both books have come out!
Really enjoyed this book even though some of the content was disturbing. Immediately bought the second book in the series….looking forward to reading more from this author.
When I read the blurb it piqued my curiosity, I love different reads I hate reading the same mundane story. Luckily I chose right.
This story touches on a subject that I haven’t read in another book and I was interested in how it was going to be handled.
I must say I loved Roman when he said he was going to retrieve his wife and family he surely meant it. His wife was a little less on board with his decision but his bossiness which I found endearing proved she really didn’t have any choice. The way he handled her was hilarious but even better she did not take his shit laying down, she gave it back to him. He was always telling her ‘check your attitude’. But being a feisty female she would always give it back.
These two have such great chemistry and I hoped they find there way back to each other.
AHHH!!!!
Aly Martinez is quickly becoming one of my must read authors. I have been devouring everything that she has been putting out lately and Retrieval is no exception. This book is the first book in The Retrieval Duet and plays into the second book. It is going to be a little difficult writing this review to make sure that it is completely spoiler free so I’m not going to do a recap. I’m just going to jump in and tell you how the book made me feel.
This book took me all over the place and I mean that in the best possible way. I absolutely love the concept of two couples and one story. Written in multiple POVs makes it so easy to connect with all of the main characters. Their story is heartbreaking, suspenseful and hopeful.
I think many people are going to really connect with Elisabeth. Her part of the story just draws out emotions. I wanted to cry for her. I wanted to cry with her. I felt her emotions right along with her and I certainly felt that unmistakable bond with Roman.
“Our relationship was based on an overwhelming desire and an unexplainable need for one another.”
Roman was relentless and I was absolutely unprepared for how hard I fell for him.
I really can’t say much more without spoiling anything. You must go into this book blind and be prepared for a suspenseful and emotional ride. Just pick up this book and read it. You’ll kick yourself later if you don’t!
“I knew absolutely nothing about that man. But I knew he was mine. And I was meant to be his.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I picked this book up. The blurb didn’t really give a clear idea of what to expect, so I pretty much went in blind. “One story. Two couples.” had me worried that the book would have a love triangle, I was really happy that wasn’t the case!
I really enjoyed Retrieval, it had a very different feel than the romance stories I usually read. There are multiple POVs but please don’t let that stop you from reading this book, because they were all essential POVs. Two of the POVs were of Elisabeth and Roman, who were married in less than a week. They have that one of a kind love that everyone is looking for and hoping to find. When they lose their son their relationship goes through a very rough patch. The third POV is that of Clare. I am not going into what she is going through, but let me say that my heart broke for her in this book.
Roman is a funny, sexy alpha male. He goes after what he wants and doesn’t take the weak no as an answer. Elisabeth is very strong and there was one scene in this book that made me appreciate her even more. The statement she made was so powerful, and made me admire her so much. Clare is also very strong but life has put her down and she is struggling to get up. But she puts others before her safety and that is something I can admire as well.
I figured out pretty soon what was going on, but there also was a plot twist that I didn’t see coming. That plot twist has me really excited to get my hands on the sequel Transfer, which is Clare’s story. I can’t wait to learn more about her. Overall this is a great contemporary romance with a little bit of suspense thrown into it. It worked out really well. I love Aly’s books and this one is another unique romance story.
“Remember to Live”
At the beginning of Retrieval, that advice cannot be heeded because the main characters’ very existence is thwarted by their pasts as well as their confined presents, leaving them breathless and damaged, merely existing for their jobs and for those who depend on them, but any more than that is impossible because Roman, Elisabeth, and Claire are far too battered and damaged to truly claim their lives and live.
But the main characters’ suffering allows them to fight when it matters most, and as the storyline twists and tangles several lives together, this is the time that they’ll need to live in the present, letting go of the past and redefining themselves as fighters not those who check out and allow significant moments to pass them by.
I wasn’t sure how one story could be told about two very different couples; I worried that it would seem choppy or fragmented, but Aly Martinez seamlessly weaves their stories together, exploring how the power of love can transcend almost anything, and just when it seems like all hope is lost and there’s no chance things will work out, the path to do so becomes clearer and it forces its travelers to trust in themselves and what they feel while also calling in reinforcements when the fight can’t be won alone.
In Retrieval, Aly Martinez truly defines what it means to be a storyteller; readers can’t help but be lured into the story because her intensely poetic words and the complexity of her characters demand readers’ attention. There cannot be any distractions as readers consume Roman, Elisabeth, and Clare’s story; every part of it has to be felt and experienced as its most basic level because as the storyline strips its characters’ bare, exposing their hopes, fears, and ultimately, their strengths, every action they take builds from one to the next, forcing readers to keep a tenuous hold on their emotions as Roman and Elisabeth reunite two years after their life together imploded, helping them to see and understand that their undeniable connection is strong enough to repair the past and drive back the grief and bitterness as long as the present doesn’t force their hands in a way that will leave them irreparably broken.
Here’s hoping that everything can be repaired!

Wow. I did not expect that!
“I was broken, battered, and destroyed. And yet, much to my dismay, as I watched the front door close behind her, my heart kept beating.”
My heart was banging out of my chest! All of the characters laid out their emotional cards on the table and it is heartbreaking to read.
Sometimes when you read a blurb to a book you pretty much know what you are getting into, well not with this story. It took me down a path I had no idea I was going to go down and it was fabulous. I loved the unique spin on this second chance romance.
Since this is a duet I knew a cliffhanger was coming, but one sentence knocked me for a loop. Thank goodness Transfer is coming out the same month!
I can’t get enough! It’s so awesome
