Life throws you curve balls, but no parent should ever bury a child.
Determined not to make the same mistakes with his son that he made with his daughter, Nic Beuve is single-minded . . . until Hope Delaney walks into his life. Burning desire, a deep need to protect, and a woman who looks like an angel break down Nic’s defenses until he can’t ignore them any longer. He wants Hope, and what Nic … and what Nic wants . . .
Hope Delaney is a woman with a past that almost broke her. She tries to keep people at bay for their own protection and hers. Fortunately for her, no one in New Orleans listens when she says she wants to be alone. Hope thinks she can walk away at any time, but she wasn’t counting on a man like Nic to weaken her defenses OR a nosy but loving Cajun Boss. Maman Rose wants Nic and Hope together and what Maman Rose wants, happens.
Will their relationship survive an ex with an agenda or will her past come between them—or kill them?

Another read from this author that had me on the edge of my seat! Hope is New Orleans, trying to escape the horrors of her past. Nic is reliving his every day after losing his daughter to drugs. Two broken souls that seem to gravitate towards each other, with a helping hand from Rose!
Lord when they let their walls down, the chemistry is off the charts and it is just beautiful. I am a puddle of goo as I imagine Nic calling Hope, Sugar!!
But there are certain people that don’t want them together and will do almost any to come between them.
What a read!
For some reason I had been on a C.P. Smith kick and decided to read just about every darn book she has released. I wasn’t sure I would like this one too much because the content and reviewers mentioned that this book had more serious content and was more all around darker and serious than her other books. However, this is one instant I am glad I took the plunge and just read the book.
Both Hope and Nic are dealing with serious issues in their lives. For Hope she’s running away from an abusive husband and family that want to kill her for what she’s done. Nic is dealing with the death of his daughter and an ex-wife who seems to think dealing with their daughter’s death will bring them back together.
Neither is looking for any kind of relationship, but whether they like it or not there is somebody in their corners who believes they would be the perfect pair for each other. Maman Rose is a hopeless romantic and can’t help herself when it comes to those she loves.
If I had one complaint about this book, it was the use of French throughout this book. I didn’t take French so the constant going back to the beginning to figure out the meaning of a phrase was quite annoying. It would’ve been a bit more enjoyable if she would’ve just put the meaning in parentheses or even italicized at the bottom of the page
I loved everything this book! It’s got such a heart-breakingly beautiful, deep meaning behind the story and it all comes out wonderfully! From the AWE-I-wanna-soak-it-up moments between Nic and Hope, to the UGH-I-wanna-shake-somebody moments with Kat, from the angst-y moments to the suspenseful moments, from the hot and steamy to the melting-so-sweet! C.P. Smith nailed this story and I can’t wait for the next ride she takes me on!
C.P. Smith definitely has her own voice and way to tell a story, but if you’re a fan of Kristen Ashley – you’re going to love any/all of C.P. Smith’s books! Their men are kick-@$$ alphas. Their women are tough and sweet. They know how to tell a story and keep you enthralled.
I definitely highly recommend this book!
This book intrigued me from the very beginning. After reading the Reasons series I was curious to read a more angsty story from this author, and I was not disappointed. Set in one of my favorite cities, New Orleans, I loved the feel of the story and after a few pages the Cajun/French was easily understood. I loved the characters, even the secondary ones are well defined: Rose, Nic’s parent, his ex-wife, and his son were vividly presented in the book. And Hope and Nic nearly jump off the page with their chemistry and sexy banter.
Hope has no roots, after ten years in an abusive relationship and turning state’s evidence in about her husband and family’s drug trafficking, she has been on the run. When she comes to New Orleans she is not prepared for the people who take her into their hearts as family or the sexy alpha who sparks her soul. The losses she has suffered in her life, and spending her teenage years in the system, leaves Hope reluctant to form lasting bonds. Try as she might, Rose, Big Daddy, Nicky, and Nic find their way into her heart.
Nic has spent the last year mourning the loss of his teenaged daughter and questioning the collapse of his marriage. Lost in the pain of a father’s loss, he is unprepared when Hope stumbles into his life. Feeling a level of protectiveness he has never felt before his fight to keep Hope at a distance is for naught. As they open their hearts to each other, sharing their darkest moments, feelings take hold. What follows is a beautiful love story, an intriguing suspense story, and a nearly heartbreaking ending. Ms. Smith does an excellent job of keeping the reader on their toes and twisting the story at the end to grab the reader by the heartstrings and make their emotions spin. I thoroughly enjoyed the difference in the level of emotion in this read versus the other series that I’ve read and look forward to more books from this author.
