Amy Wallace has made plenty of mistakes in her young life, but she didn’t see this one coming. Chris Seger is a marine serving in Afghanistan. His life is forever altered by a single, fateful step. A mother of another Afghan war vet suffers a devastating loss, which changes the course of Finley’s life for good. Finley is a mostly golden retriever, who suddenly finds himself alone and confused in … in a dog shelter. Could this prison actually become the place where Finley finally finds freedom? Rescuing Finley tells the story of how one rescue dog powerfully impacts three tragic lives and puts all of them on a road toward redemption and healing.
Dan Walsh is known for page-turning, character driven novels. Fans of Dan’s other novels, as well as dog-lovers everywhere will especially enjoy Rescuing Finley.

If you have a love for dogs and for our wounded veterans, this is a must read.
Loved it, passing it on to my daughter and granddaughters. Started reading book 2 yesterday.
Awesome book everyone should read loved it.
This is not my usual genre, there are no murders, gore, or violence but I liked it very much. It’s a sweet story about two women, a man and a dog. I found myself caring about the dog more than any of the people but that wasn’t because they were not as likable.
It was a nice change of pace for me and I would recommend it to anyone.
Reading this book was very entertaining for me. I enjoyed the view from the dog’s side of things. The story was fairly predictable, but it still kept my interest throughout.
Just finished this book and I fell in love with it. It is a beautiful story of a dog named Finley. He is a golden Retriever. The story starts out with a girl named Amy who was a meth addict and was caught stealing a ring. She ended up in prison and then was picked to train dogs in prison for vets who have PTSD and other war problems. Finley who’s owner( Chaz) went to war and did not make it was left to his mother who did not care for dogs and could not handle him. She takes Finley to a shelter and the dog is very depressed and lonely. Finley is picked to be one of the dogs that will be trained for the vets. Amy is picked to be his trainer. She falls in love with the dog and it is hard for her to part with it. Chris who is a vet suffering from PTSD goes to the prison to see the program and to get a dog. Finley falls for Chris and Amy is finally happy for Finley and Chris. It is a story of love for a dog and shows how dogs can be trained to help vets through PTSD. A beautiful story that any animal lover would love to read. I can not wait to read the second book in this series A Forever Home called Finding Riley.
I loved the book but it has several months. I read three of Dan Walsh’s books one right after the other but could not write a review because I’ve read too many books since. It was good enough to re-read at a later date.
You do not have to be a dog over to fall in love with Finley….a big lovable golden retriever. Enjoyed getting to know the people that rescued Finley and those he rescued.
Who doesn’t love a good dog story. Although, as usual, it is more about the human characters than the dog. This book was informative about the program for women prisoners to train guard dogs for veterans with PTSD. And, as you might guess, there was a romantic interest between the woman prisoner and the veteran, but all done tastefully enogh that I recommended it to a couple of young teenage grandchildren.
Great story. Tear jerker.
Love good stories with dogs and Dan Walsh has written some very good ones. This is one of them.
very enjoyable
If you love dogs, this is a book for you. It deals with the mind set of our four legged friends. Dan Walsh does a great job of this and this is a good read.
There is hope for the hopeless !
If you want a “feel good” book, if you like stories about animals, this will be a great read.
Excellent story that focuses on training dogs to become companion/service dogs for returning Veterans that suffer from PTSD and some having physical disabilities from injuries from the war as well. This particular training program is run by a female prison, with the trainers being reformed model prisoners, with the right personality to learn to train the dogs and work with the Vets that will be taking the dogs home.
Finley is a retriever that ended up at the SPCA, due to his owner being killed in the war and the mother couldn’t take care of him, not particularly a dog person, and every time she seen Finley, it reminded her she would never see her son. The SPCA that Finley was taken too is one where they chose dogs for the prison dog training program that allowed Vets to receive a dog at no cost.
What is interesting is how the prison program not only helps our Vets, but also helps the women that does the training and that’s how the story drew me in. I had to read to see how Amy, Finley’s trainer, would do with a dog she never had, and how would Finley respond. It’s a story that once I started I couldn’t stop. What these dogs do for our Vets is awesome.
Awesome storyline.
It was really sweet that they shared finleys life and the soldiers and the problems they faced after the war. It Alos shows how a dog can make someone in jail a better person and make a veteran happy again.
Loved the story line. Great characters. Just purchased the next 2 in the series. Thanks Dan for a refreshing story.
I read this book quite awhile ago but I remember liking it very much.
