In Rescued, David Rosenfelt again delights his readers with the charm and wit they’ve come to expect. Even the most fervent fans of the sardonic Andy Carpenter and his team will be enthralled by this latest case, where the stakes have never been higher. Defense lawyer Andy Carpenter is reluctant to take on any more cases. He’d much rather spend his time working for his dog rescue organization, … rescue organization, the Tara Foundation, than find himself back in a courtroom. However, when a truck carrying over seventy dogs from the South to the rescue-friendly northeast turns up with a murdered driver, Andy can’t help but get involved.
Of course Andy is eager to help the dogs, many of whom come to the Tara Foundation while awaiting forever homes – it’s the man accused of murder who he has a problem defending. The accused just happens to be his wife Laurie’s ex-fiance; her tall, good looking, ex-Marine ex-fiance. Even though he acknowledges having argued with the victim, he swears that he is not a killer, and though he would rather not, Andy has to admit he believes he’s telling the truth.
For Andy, even with dozens of successful cases behind him, this case that his wife insists he take may prove to be his most difficult.

Another intriguing story with a fairly high body count and some help from the Feds. Andy Carpenter is a wise-mouthed lawyer who can afford to take semi retirement by only representing innocent clients while supporting an animal shelter. Add in that his wife is no longer law enforcement but works as his private investigator and more and you have the baseline for these convoluted mysteries. There are many other people who help Andy find out what the truth really is and make it courtroom admissible. This time it involves a semi full of rescue dogs, an old boyfriend of Carpenter’s wife, and a change from the simple not guilty to a self defense plea. No spoilers, and the snarkfest keeps it from being too realistic. Lots of twists and turns in the plot and the characters certainly are, but there’s no need for spoilers or an attempt at a summary. I found it to be a real brain grabber and it is one in a series of interesting and well written mysteries. At no time does the reader feel lost or as if missing background info.
Grover Gardner narrates this complicated snarkfest perfectly!
I love this series with its quirky characters. Andy Carpenter is a terrific man. Even though he is wealthy and doesn’t need to work he does anyway. He is a good lawyer but doesn’t particularly like lawyering. His team is quite a mixed bag. Edna is his secretary who kept upgrading her title and is now his office manager. But there’s nobody to manage! She doesn’t want to work so she is always upset when Andy takes on a client. Sam is the accountant, computer genius (hacker extraordinaire). He, on the other hand, is happy when there is a new case. It gets him away from accounting and into investigating on the internet, making him a happy camper. Nothing will ever make the other lawyer, Hike, happy. Andy’s wife, Laurie, is lovely. As an ex-cop, she is really good as an investigator. Lucky for Andy she is good with people, too, since he’s not. Her people skills come in handy for Andy especially when it comes to communicating with Marcus who most can’t understand since he often only gives one-syllable grunts. But Marcus is a top-notch investigator, along with being big and fierce. Laurie is always looking out for Andy and often sends Marus along with him to keep him safe.
Andy takes a case of defending a man charged with murder. He didn’t want to take on this client since he was Laurie’s ex but he did anyway. As the investigation/story progressed, there was another storyline that we didn’t find out much about for quite a while. Just a few pages every couple of chapters where we found out about some people and their hierarchy in the group. I found that confusing and the group was creepy.
Andy is sooo funny. I am always laughing at his thoughts throughout the books. This time, though, he belittled himself a lot and I didn’t like that.
I love the Andy Carpenter series. But this book, not so much. The storyline was not easy to follow and there wasn’t much about the dogs. Still a good book, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as the others. Having said that, mystery fans will enjoy this book.
Rescued: An Andy Carpenter Mystery (An Andy Carpenter Novel Book 17)

This is my second read by this author and well it left me with mixed emotions. ! The story starts out in first person then It shifts to 3 rd person. It started out really good , then kind of died once The dogs were rescued. The storyline was a bit confusing to me. I did however love the humor mixed into the story. It was a pretty quick read with short chapters. I somewhat enjoyed the story, but would have loved to see more action from the dogs . The story revolves around Andy’s initially-reluctant defense of his wife’s former love, who’s been charged in the murder of a driver who was transporting dogs from Southern shelters to northern rescue groups for adoption. The alternating points of view in the writing also made it a bit confusing as well. Esp when it changed points of view in the same chapter without warning. This was my second book by this author and despite wanting to love these books i did not care for either one so I’m guessing these are not for me.
Andy Carpenter is a criminal defense lawyer who doesn’t want to take cases anymore. He’s independently wealthy and would prefer to spend his time rescuing dogs and caring for them in the shelter he set up. When a tractor trailer with over 70 abandoned dogs is found, he’s right there to pick them up. And, by the way, there’s also a dead body in the trailer.
It was a pretty good mystery which I didn’t figure out. When Andy figures it out, I thought I might have missed something because there was no mention of how he got there. But it could have just been me and not a plot hole. Great cast of characters and Andy himself is the biggest character of all. Not laugh out loud, but humorous.
This is Book 17 and I’m reading Book 1 now.
Humorous mystery -Reluctant lawyer Andy Carpenter agrees to defend his wife’s ex- fiancé from a murder charge. In spite of compelling DNA evidence , Andy and friends investigate the murder and a convoluted conspiracy unwinds. Funny , but hair raising at times. Also a truck full of lovable rescue dogs adds “ahh” factor to the story.
I love the Andy Carpenter Series.
All of the Andy Carpenter books are witty and entertaining–I have read every one of them. This one didn’t have as much about Tara, Sebastian and the Tara Foundation in it as his other books in the series; however, the story moved right along.
Loved this book . I have read everyone in this Andy Carpender series and have never been disipointed . It’s like reading about old friends.
I like David Rosenfelt’s books. They have a good story line and witty dialog. It’s an easy read and good story.
I love this entire series and would recommend them to anyone that likes dogs or likes to laugh. They are also always a good story.
