For someone like me who usually isn’t interested in superheroes and superpowers… this was a really good book. A great mix of action, witty humor and secrets with a little romance sprinkled on top of it all.
Side Note: Frostbite is the worst. Seriously.
The beginning of what I’m sure will be another great series from this author
I’m usually pretty leery of any book that has a cast of characters or dramatis personae in the beginning, because that’s usually a signal that there are too many characters for the reader to remember… And that’s usually because the author has failed to make each one memorable. This book really doesn’t need a cast of characters in the beginning, because the author paces introducing each of her many characters, and even better, they’re all memorable. I’m looking forward to reading book 2 and highly recommend this book as well! A really good take on the super hero thing, something I also don’t usually enjoy, but Marissa Meyer does a great job as usual.
The only flaw I can see is that at the beginning of a book, a major motivating character is stated to be dead by the protagonist, Nova. At the end of the book, Nova visits that character, greeting him no surprise at all. Up to that point there’s no hint that Nova is an unreliable narrator, and I wonder if this was a mistake by the author or a major aspect of Nova’s personality. It’ll be interesting to find out in the second book.
Are the lines between right and wrong – superhero and villain – always clear? Marissa Meyer paints an entertaining tale that will make you wonder. It is entertaining and full of great characters.
(note…this is a young adult book and my 11 yo loved it just as much as me)
Oh, I loved this book…a LOT! This is a wonderful, creative new world from the amazing mind of Marissa Meyer…superheroes and villains for the win. YES!!
The heroine is a villian. The hero is a superhero. BUT he has no idea she’s truly on the opposite side. So many wonderful moments. I can’t wait for more to come.
LOVED THIS BOOK!!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
I know I’m in the minority, but I just could not get into this one… I have struggled with Marissa Meyer before, and probably should have taken that to heart, because I seem to have the same issues with her pacing and predictability every single time I pick up a book. I loved the idea, but both overall and in terms of the individual superhero characters – but, as with Cinder, I rather quickly found myself feeling like I had read this book before. It felt a little like Peter Clines’ Ex-Heroes, and while I normally love Peter Clines that is my least favorite of his works. I don’t know if I’m just burned out on superhero stories or if the Marvel and DC Comics movies are ruining superhero books for me, but I just could not find my way into this story…
Thanks to NetGalley for my review copy.
I read this book because it was part of a reading challenge for our 8th grade daughter. I admit, I never would’ve selected it, and I would’ve missed out. I am glad I did read this book, even though it looked waaay too long and thick and “judging by the cover” yes, we do this sometimes, don’t we, I also wouldn’t have picked it. I did not at all enjoy the tossing in of the homosexual fathers, but that’s the “going trend” these days, so I also was not surprised. It didn’t get gross with it, but it just IS, so that’s that. But yay also because in reading this book I also reached another goal for the “reading goals of the year” because it was “a book of more than 500 pages.” I haven’t read any of this author’s other work, and I MIGHT read the second one (it just came out!) in this series. But probably not, actually. I did eventually get interested in it and then I was just reading so I could see how it ended. She definitely had a LOT of creativity and amazing thoughts and twists throughout and just enough mission and ambition, funnies and bits of ‘the love interest’ in there, and the magic of all the superpowers and stuff was definitely cool. So yep, I liked it. I wonder how in the world my daughter will ever make it through though. It IS very LONG!
Loved it. Really touched my heart and now on of my favorite books. Totally recommend to those whos into fantasy and romance.

Oh my goodness. If you are looking for a book that you can’t put down, this is the one to read. I cannot WAIT for the second book.
I really enjoyed this story, but I had a hard time getting into it. I initially found it hard to identify with any of the characters and to figure out what their motivation was. Once I got past that, it is a well-written story with some interesting characters and a fantastic take on “super-villains”. The super-villains in this story were interesting, multi-faceted characters. I especially enjoyed Honey. The action scenes are well-paced.
I am not normally into Superhero books but needed something to read on a trip. I really enjoyed this story and the authors writing style. The characters were surprisingly relatable and down to earth. Would highly recommend.
I was drawn into this world, and I am desperate to find out how it turns out. It left readers on a cliff hanger which I don’t like. I wish it had resolved. Very compelling characters.
The book has a lot of faults but it’s a good read.
I don’t care if the book was long; I loved every page of it. My greedy little eyes gobbled up every word, sometimes so fast I had to backtrack to the beginning of the page. It was stuck to my hands and is undeniable proof that Marissa Meyer is still writing strongly.
