This slow-burn romance is the first in a series of standalone rom-coms featuring heroines who work in STEM fields.

Nice light read
Couldn’t put it down.
It was OK. Could not finish
A light read and looking forward to others in the series.
Really enjoyed this romantic comedy and ended up reading all of Susannah Nix’s books in this series (each is a complete, stand-alone book, but they are all connected and some characters show up in other books). Well-written and engaging and the geeky heroine was someone I could relate to. Best kind of “brain candy”!
I’m not really sure how Remedial Rocket Science escaped my radar for as long as it did, but as soon as I read the blurb, I knew I had to have the book. The synopsis sounded absolutely delightful and comparing it even loosely to Penny Reid or Sally Thorne means it basically has my name written all over it. I do love a good romance with a seriously smart and kickass heroine, so this was right up my alley. It was smart, funny and delivered a delicious slow burn.
As excited as I was to read the book, I was admittedly a little nervous about the whole other woman thing. As in, you know, Jeremy had a girlfriend when he and Melody were reunited. (And, well, when they were together the first time.) He was a little misguided when he was younger. I liked watching them build a friendship, but there was so much chemistry under it that it was hard to imagine them staying that way. But, at the same time, I liked his girlfriend — and so did Melody, as they became friends. This is where the angst came in — both for me and Melody. I won’t tell you how it all ends, but I will say I was surprised and really, really happy.
This book definitely gave me some Penny Reid vibes and I loved that. I’m already about halfway through the audio of the second book in the series and I’m enjoying it every bit as much. Angst aside, it’s a fun, swoony and sexy romantic comedy. I highly recommend if that’s your kind of thing.
FAVORITE QUOTES
Melody wasn’t a super-fan of picnics, given her aversion to insects, sunburn, group activities and portable toilets.
Her feelings for Jeremy were like Schrodinger’s Crush. As long as she didn’t open the box, their relationship existed in a state of quantum superposition: both possible and impossible at the same time. She was too much of a wimp to find out whether the cat was alive or dead.
Jeremy was like the sun. It was warm when he was shining on you, but when he was shining somewhere else, he cast a cold shadow.
I really enjoyed this novel. The characters were realistic and likable. I was surprised about the one friendship and I think that made the book.
Cute, slow burn romance with a ‘nerdy’ main character but no great talk of ‘nerd stuff’. Lots of pop culture references.
I enjoyed this book. the glamor thing with the guy was a bit over the top, but aside from that I found it enjoyable and with some nice depth to the characters.
This is more of a YA book to me than anything else, althougn it does include a romance element. Melody and Jeremy don’t seem like they can be soul mates, and Jeremy in particular has terrible taste in women, while Melody feels a bit stifled by her nerdiness. They work it out and it’s all good fun. Best for the 15-25 audience probably.
In some ways, this is a typical romance, but it goes way beyond that because the characters, even some of the secondary characters, are multi-dimensional and believable. This book is perfect for a rainy afternoon.
Cute story, however, needs editing. I enjoyed how the egg head girl got the playboy, but my pet peeve is poor grammar and words in the wrong place. The mistakes not horrible, just annoying. I really noticed it toward the end of the book.
I would almost give this 4 stars but wanted more romance between 2 leads and more “rocket science”. The characters both worked at an aerospace company but not sure what rocket science had to do with book them since he was in business side, and Melody was in IT side. Where’s the rocket science? Melody should have been programming or testing software for the rockets.
That said, I really liked the main character Melody- especially when she told that her old college one-time hook-up she did not want to be friends with him once she found out that he cheated on his girlfriend with her. Their friendship rebounded and evolved slowly-eventually leading back to romance.
cute but predictable
This was an easy to read book that would be great for the beach, a long plane ride or a day at sea. There was nothing inherently bad about the book but it was just pretty predictable.
Considering what’s on television and the movies this book would be suitable for high school and up.
Cute and engaging. I read this book after reading several dramatic books, mystery, war, death…so this book was just what I needed. Easy read, romance, yearning-heart, krpt me coming back to it.
Enjoyable.
Made me laugh!
This book was filled with funny but endearing characters. As young people do, they interpreted the actions of their friends in incorrect ways. The love story was fraught with these misinterpretations, but things worked out in the end–not always predictably. I was happy that there were diverse, realistic characters with good qualities and flaws, a few real-life situations to balance the kisses, and that the author did not focus only on the romantic couple. While this is not great literature, it was a charming read, and I was sorry to see the story end. It left some questions unanswered (Does she ever get a promotion to something where she can use her amazing intellect? Does he work it out with his family? Does she ever appreciate her mother? Does he find something he really wants to do in life? Does she get an office with a window? Does he begin to identify his strengths and put them to good use? Does she get some more furniture and more of the attractive clothes and quit hanging out in gym shorts?) so I wonder if there will be a sequel.
I am extremely impressed by this author’s debut book. I’m not sure I would call it a second chance romance, because of the way they started off. But, I do call it terrific. Melody is the kind of friend I would love to have. She is flawed and down-to-earth, but she is also smart, helpful and acts like she is fearless. We get to see all her insecurities and maybe that’s what allows her to be so charming. She and Jeremy have such a wonderful friendship. How cool is it that she is friends with two of Jeremy’s ex’s and there is no animosity. I love it when Drew and Charlotte congratulated her on the toast from Jeremy’s mother, the “Ice Queen”. I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to seeing more books from Ms. Nix. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
