Absolutely one of my all time favorite books. It’s a rare thing when a book can pull so many elements together.
I love the Pendergast series. This is the book that introduces the world to FBI Special Agent Aloysius Xengu Leng Pendergast, a brilliant but psychologically damaged man from an aristocratic New Orleans family. He is tasked with solving the mystery of several murders that took place at the Museum of Natural History in New York City. As I have a degree in anthropology, I love these books because they’re filled with archaeology, anthropology, history, paleontology, & X files.
Within the last year, I’ve fallen head-first in love with the Pendergast novels. This is the first, and it’s a straight up horror thriller with a scientific twist. People are turning up violently murdered in the New York Museum of Natural History, but officials are reluctant to shut the museum down because of a spectacular new exhibition that’s opening, featuring a relic of mysterious and frightening origins. In comes FBI Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast working alongside Lieutenant Vincent D’Agosta to defeat a scientific nightmare unlike anything mankind has seen before except in one of the remotest parts of the world. This is easily one of my favorite horror novels. You’re in for a rocket ride into unspeakable terror.
Love the mix of thriller and supernatural.
THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. IT WAS THE FIRST OF THE PENDERGAST SERIES. I HAVE READ ALL THE BOOKS AND ALL THE SPINOFFS. I JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THEM. NOW I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE. I JUST FINISHED #20 CROOKED RIVER OF THE ORIGINAL SERIES.

An improbable confluence of events leads to an inevitable crisis.
With well drawn characters and a plausible premise (at least to those of us who don’t know better) I was riveted from the beginning.
I finished RELIC this morning and just ordered book 2. Can I just say I’m thrilled there are 19 books in this series? I’ve alreayd told my friends they may be hearing less from me…
What took me so long???
Re-read for the second time. I had forgotten how much action there was in this book as I hadn’t read it since its first publication in 1995, when I was introduced to Agent Pendergast.
The first part of the book starts out a little slow as it provides the back drop for the story and then the last half of the story the action begins.
What better way to spend the day at a museum without a care in the world until you find out there is a creature loose in the place and no one knows where it could be or where it could strike next. This is no ordinary creature either as it is very intelligent and even has the capability to open doors. It also likes humans, but not to get friendly with them, but to add them to its snack list.
The book has suspense, mystery, horror, and a little gore thrown in for good measure. I am still giving the book five stars like I did before and I will be continuing the series.
Excellent. Enjoyed every frightening page!
Read it years ago but love this series and have kept up with it.
A great read, but I cannot tell you more because it was one of the first books I bought when I got my Nook reader.
This is the first book I read by Preston & Child, and I was immediately hooked!
Agent Pendergast is awesome, but don’t limit yourself to the books in that series. All their books are keepers!!
A great start to an impressive series
This was the first book by these authors that I read and since then I read all their books.
Weird premise. Awkward start to what becomes my favorite fictional books. I guess it should be read before going on to the latter Pendergast books.
One of those books you can read over and over! It’s as good the third time as the first. Two of my favorite authors!
This is probably their best book. I loved all of the early Prendergast books but recently…not so much. This one however is spectacular and a great way to introduce yourself to these guys.
I don’t know how many times I have read this book. I’m always pulled in to the story and want to stay up all night and finish it. I recommend this book and all the ones in the Pendergast series. His character is unique and I relish his response to the pompous bureaucracy knowing they don’t have a chance when he walks into the room. If you like suspense, action-packed and just can’t put it down book, this is it. Anything written by these authors will not disappoint.
Absolutely one of my favorite books! This book lays the foundation for exciting adventures with special agent Pendergast! I highly recommend the whole series.
Suspenseful. Great book, if you watched the (bad) movie don’t let it discourage from reading the book.
It’s been many years since I read Relic, but I remember it as being a real page-turner. I recommend it to anyone who likes good horror.
