Blending the iconoclastic feminism of The Notorious RBG and the confident irreverence of Go the F**ck to Sleep, a brazen and empowering illustrated collection that celebrates inspirational badass women throughout history, based on the popular Tumblr blog. Well-behaved women seldom make history. Good thing these women are far from well behaved . . . Illustrated in a contemporary animation style, …
Illustrated in a contemporary animation style, Rejected Princesses turns the ubiquitous “pretty pink princess” stereotype portrayed in movies, and on endless toys, books, and tutus on its head, paying homage instead to an awesome collection of strong, fierce, and yes, sometimes weird, women: warrior queens, soldiers, villains, spies, revolutionaries, and more who refused to behave and meekly accept their place.
An entertaining mix of biography, imagery, and humor written in a fresh, young, and riotous voice, this thoroughly researched exploration salutes these awesome women drawn from both historical and fantastical realms, including real life, literature, mythology, and folklore. Each profile features an eye-catching image of both heroic and villainous women in command from across history and around the world, from a princess-cum-pirate in fifth century Denmark, to a rebel preacher in 1630s Boston, to a bloodthirsty Hungarian countess, and a former prostitute who commanded a fleet of more than 70,000 men on China’s seas.

Real women, real lives…a wonderful alternative to superficial and fictional princesses.
We never hear about the women of history. I could choke to death on everything I had to learn about George Washington, General Patton, and the Roosevelts, but hadn’t read about 3/4 of the women in this book. LOVE THIS! Amazing women, feats that I couldn’t believe. Everyone should read this.
I have been reading this book since November. November!!! This is the longest I have ever taken to read a book like this and it is because I feel it has one major issue that made it difficult to want to read this book.
So to break it down a little.
Liked:
1. The warning system for the level of maturity, ie rape, violennce, abuse. This book, I believe, is geared to be read to YA so that is a great indicator of if it is appropriate.
2. The artwork for each person. Each was very well though out and featured little clues related to their life.
3. There are a lot of women in this book. Almost all of them were new to me ( I have read another book like this that had 100 women).
4. I like the art notes and trivia added at the end of some of the stories. It provides little details about the art and some trivia that might not have worked in the story.
Cons:
1. This was a major one and my biggest problem with this book. The writing style.
I wish it was just informative about what the woman did. Instead the author adds his sense to what happened and little jokes and quips that took away from what these women did. Overall the writing needed to be more concise and to the point.
2. The authors input almost made me feel like he was trying to influence how you should feel about what this woman did instead of giving the reader a chance to make your own decision. This is a major problem. The reader should be able to create their own opinion about these women.
3. A few of the women are legends, not actual people and I feel that they shouldn’t have been in the book.
As you can see I had a major problem with the way this book was written. I feel like it completely destroyed my enjoyment of learning about these women because of it.
I am giving this book 2 stars because while I liked all the unknown women, I could not get over the writing style.
Short sketches of the lives of women who lived outside the norm. After all, if they had lived according to the social rules of their times, few if any, would be remembered.
This is an awesome collection of stories of powerful women throughout history. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable, but I had heard of only a handful. The entries are well organized according to the maturity of the subject matter, which makes this books very useful to schools. Do yourself a favor and find out more about the awesome historical women.
