***Must Read Books 1 & 2 First! All 3 books available now!People dream of a love that runs deep. So deep it feels like it’s always been with you, just waiting for the person who’ll own your heart and soul forever. So few ever find it, but for Rhyson Gray and Kai Pearson, happily ever after was only the beginning…One of the biggest rock stars in the world and one of the brightest rising … brightest rising stars make a life together. Sometimes it’s glamour-filled days and blissed out nights, but it’s mostly staying true in the too-bright glare of the spotlight. It’s long stretches where the road is lonely and the work is hard. It’s living in a love that’s the safest place you know even while danger lurks at your door.
Book 3 of The Soul series is an emotionally-charged epic conclusion that had to be told and should not be missed for fans of this series and this couple!

In Refrain, Kai and Rhyson are finally together, so all should be smooth sailing right? WRONG!
With everything from old choreographers, to crazed stalkers (who are moving quickly from ordinary to over the top dangerous), to singers and pianists playing with Rhyson that want to PLAY with Rhyson, Rhys and Kai just can’t manage any down time.
Even though parts of the book, Refrain, felt rushed, the majority of it felt strangely intimate. Kennedy Ryan has captured the essence of Kai and Rhys, allowing us a picture into their romantic lives, and showing us the warmth of the love they’ve fought so hard to enjoy together. Sexy even through the arguments, and loving over and beyond the fear Kai and Rhyson are both suffering, Refrain was a nice way of saying goodbye to such a power house couple!
PERFECT LOVE
REFRAIN was the perfect conclusion to The Soul Series…And, it’s another Kennedy Ryan series, you do not want to miss….and another one, I’m sad to see end…
I love Rhyson and Kai…I was introduced to them in the The Grip Series….(Read this series first)….but since that series is about another couple, their characters and backgrounds weren’t as fleshed out, so there was so much I didn’t know……(I hate reading out of order, but I am so glad I went back to read this series…The love between Rhyson and Kai is almost touchable…I certainly felt it in my heart…….I want to say so much about this book and this series, but everyone deserves to read the words for themselves the first time….
My reviews for books by Kennedy Ryan seem to have a similar sentiment…I love them…..Kennedy Ryan is a writing genius…She writes intelligent dialogue and storylines I can’t get enough of…and characters with whom I fall in love!!! No one writes like her….
I’m writing this review here for the whole Soul series assuming once you reach Refrain, you must have gone through My Soul to Keep and Down to My Soul.
My Soul to Keep is the introduction to our couple Kai and Rhyson and how their friendship started. Kai is a Southern girl, beautiful, sweet, kind, with so much raw talents, yet still struggling her way in LA to make it in the entertainment industry. Rhyson is almost the opposite, a prodigy with wealthy upbringing, extremely well established in his own music career. They were connected instantly over music, their common passion. Rhyson knew right away Kai was the girl for him, but Kai still had her own inhibitions, mostly because they’re at different stages in their careers. I love how their friendship slowly evolved into a romantic relationship and how easily they connected to each other, sharing their pasts and their vulnerabilities.
Down to My Soul continued their journey as they have tried their best to resolve their mistakes, misunderstandings, and obstacles in life to make their relationship stable. As some point I was getting frustrated with Kai for her stubbornness but I could understand what went in her mind to let her make those decisions. They’ve loved each other passionately, hurt each other deeply, but in the end, their love triumphed over everything, and it was such a joy to see their love blossom all over again.
Refrain is the novella that concluded this wonderful series. Kai slowly gained her own success with the support from Rhyson. It’s wonderful to see their love strengthen further through difficult times and challenging circumstances. I couldn’t be happier with how Kennedy ended this series. Her writing is beautiful, the plots are intriguing, captivating and always conveying powerful messages, all her characters are so well developed and carefully crafted. She makes you love them, hate them, cry for them, cheer for them. This is how I always feel with every single one of her books. I’ve been reading her books backward from the most recent ones to her first books, and I love them all. You won’t regret getting into her world. I guarantee you’ll be as hooked to her as I am 🙂
I admit I may have prematurely sent hate PMs to the author on Facebook. But what else would get my point across…oh you mean a review…Well, I guess that would too…Might be slightly less premature because then I would have finished the book.
So without further procrastination:
Dear Ms. Ryan,
I am both in love with your mind and want to throw marshmallows at you. Please allow me to explain. You are mean and manipulative. You played with my emotions. You gave me great joy. You made me apprehensive. You made me happy. You made me sad. You left me confused about a future. But worst of all you made me cry and hate you just a bit. For that, I throw marshmallows. Marshmallows because though I “hate” you, I can’t really. So soft fluffy things being thrown at you, will have to be a lesson. or a snack will you right the next chapter in your characters lives!
Sincerely,
An avid Fan
Now for the review:
If by some weird happenstance, you have not read this series- you are missing out. I will forgive you, once you start the series, but you are on probation until you have complete My Soul to Keep. We will evaluate afterwards.
Now I know you’re reading this thinking I’m crazy and it’s true. Kai and Rhyson stole my heart from the first book. I am one of those people who begged mercilessly for more and so Ms. Ryan was kind enough to give us more.
This book must be read. If you haven’t read My Soul to Keep or Down to My Soul, you will be lost. This story starts with My Soul and blends with the music of their beating hearts through Down to My Soul. Their song doesn’t end there, no- the lyrics and music converge and swell in Refrain. The crescendo of emotion unleashed in Refrain will carry you to the end, but know that there will never be an end when the story lives on…
I have t to end this or I will continue to gush, but I leave you with my favorite quote as it was in the ARC. I hope that as poignant as it is, it will also hold your heart in the finished book:
“It’s a different beat. The beat anchoring our melody, strong and percussive. I’m quiet and still until it thumps inside of me. Until I hear our love. That song, that refrain that hums through my very blood and inundates my soul until every note, every phrase, every measure drowns out everything else . Our song isn’t one I’ve ever written or sung. It’s the one that plays between our souls.”
oh, I forgot to mention- I freaking loved it!
Great series.
Refrain is the conclusion of the Soul Series, and what an epic ending.. We finally get to see what happens with Rhys and Kai.. many twists and turns but their love finally succeed, breaking all the walls that had been trying to separate them..
“I want him so badly. I need him more than air. I love him beyond all my girlish imaginations.”
in Refrain we see everything coming to a conclusion.. Rhys still being a controlling alpha male (love him) but also Kai accepting and loving him more than ever.. many difficult scenarios are present in this last chapters of their story.. but also many great things happening that will bring so much love and happiness to these two amazing characters..
“I think my soul knew you before I did. Knew you were the one I should spend the rest of my life with. Getting to know you, becoming your friend, only convinced me of what I think my heart and my soul already knew.”
“That you’re mine and I’m yours.”
We also see many characters that are also coming to terms with Rhys and Kai relationship. they’re more accepting and more Welcome.. finally understanding that Kai wasn’t looking for fame and fortune when it came to Rhys.. she loves him deeply and profoundly and not many will ever understand that..
“Love is patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or proud. Love is never haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love does not hold grudges,”
We also get to see more on Marlon and Bris, “Even the strongest needs someone to be weak with. I had no idea Marlon was that for Bristol.” … as well as many other great characters that make this story so full and a little bit more angsty.. Like Dub and other characters, you will not see them coming..
Refrain is full of love and beautiful quotes and poems and even lyrics that will blow your mind and heart.. Kennedys characters are always full of Love and they always teach us something.. mainly to respect and treasure and value what we have ..
“If you love someone, you will be loyal to them no matter what the costs. You will always believe in them, always expect the best in them, and will always stand your ground in defending them.”
Kennedy as always was very spot on, with Refrain her characters, her stories are always full of love,
I could feel the passion, the need Rhys had for Kai, and also the craving Kai had for Rhys..
Kennedy writes these awesome heroes who can’t live without their heroines, who respect them and love them more than anything else in their life.. and Rhys and Kai were not the exceptions. their love was something out of this world. maybe that’s why many characters around them didn’t understand their intensity of love..
These are the stories, these are the characters that make feel alive..
“Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.”
Huge Fan of Kennedy, always looking forward to her next work..
Boy, I’m sad there’s no more of these two, well of these four actually, aka Rai and Gripstol. But I’ll be sure visiting them soon again.
I’ll probably make it a point to re-read all these books once a year. Gonna make it a tradition.
I don’t even really know what to say.. just that this was the perfect ‘ending’ to their love story and that anyone who is a fan of Kennedy or who loved the Grip series will love this series too, probably just as much. They are both definitely must read series!
Wonderful conclusion to a wonderful story.
The conclusion of Kia and Rhyson’s story is an emotional journey that proves love can conquer all. I love how this story has evolved and loved being a part of their journey. Kennedy Ryan has a was with words that flow with beauty.
Hmmm I guess I shouldn’t have waited to read book 3 b/c I sorta felt lost for most of the story trying to piece together things from book 1 and 2 while also trying to remember things from the GRIP series. Only one plot point not closed and it felt like it just ended. No epilogue, no nothing. I get that GRIP comes next and we see them in their story but I don’t remember a whole bunch. Guess I should have read them in order, but I think my first Kennedy book was Flow, it was my lead in to all her author magic.
These 2 are in a very very small group of my favorite couples. The love they have for one another is insurmountable, and KR shows this in each book she writes. Rhyson is hands down one of the best BBF I’ve ever read. He is loyal, protective, caring, and loves Kai with every ounce of honor he has.
“Perfect love casts out fear “. This is what Kai sees when she looks and thinks of Rhys. You may not get this quote, but it means something in this story. She loves him so fiercely, that she gets his protective nature and forgives his Neanderthal ways (because he does act like a caveman so much in these books), but she understands why. Fame and money bring on demons that you just can’t fathom, and he just wants her safe always. He just loves her that much…but sometimes I think her love could rival his. Which makes this book that much better.
The song Rhys writes for her carries throughout each book as a guide to what they are together. His meaning in the words play out in this story, and mean so much more by the end.
“I was lost before you found me,
or maybe I found you Maybe it was fate or kismet,
or something much more true It could have been an answered prayer,
a sacred certainty All I know is what we have now.
I’ve got no plans to leave Not an ocean,
not forever Nothing wide or deep
Will ever end this love between us
My soul is yours to keep”
There are so many things that go on in this book.. You would think that with it starting out as just a long epilogue, which turned into a completed book in the series, that the amount of drama and anxiety would not be a major plot in this story, but ohhhh nooooo. Would KR not give us more?? Of course she does, but you’re just going to have to read it to find out the good stuff. There were a few times when I lost my breath while reading, and turning the page couldn’t happen fast enough… but it’s just how their stories are!!!
I promise my quotes mean something in this book. I wish I could give more stars, because this is a 5+***** book. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!! Congrats KR. This book is phenomenal. I voluntarily reviewed this book from the author.
5 amazing stars for this conclusion! You know there was something special about this couple. Kai and Rhyson were star crossed lovers who had such a battle in finding each other and keeping each other. Their love story was so breathtakingly perfect. The ending!!! Gah I loved them so much.
This is the perfect conclusion to a soul deep and epic love story! By the end of book 2, Down To My Soul, Rhys and Kai had made their own kind of love and made their own kind of vows. They loved each other with their whole heart and soul. Now they are back home building their lives and careers together. They have grown to trust each other completely, they are better at communicating and their passion is even more intense and explosive. They will do whatever it takes to support and protect the other no matter the consequence. I didn’t think I could love Rhys & Kai any more than I did but I was wrong. They have grown and evolved into even stronger, selfless, and devoted lovers. Their friends are all there supporting them as well and adding even more fun and interest to this story. As Rhys, Kai and their production company moves forward, they are still dealing with some fallout from the previous books. They are also confronted by those who would want to tear them apart. Just when we think that their lives are sailing smoothly, there are several plot twists that only pick up speed to keep your heart racing and on the edge of your seat. Ms Ryan takes us on an exhilarating journey that will leave you raw and breathless and totally satisfied. I loved every word of this beautiful, thrilling, and sexy love story!
I’m soo in love with this series! #Kaison
Kennedy Ryan is definitely my one-click author. Her words are beyond amazing. Her characters are fabulous. The story is heart stopping

~~ ALL THE SHIMMERING STARS!~~
“This love resounds. It’s loud; so deafeningly loud that all I hear is her. And all she hears is me. We are our own refrain.”
Oh be still my wildly beating heart!!! REFRAIN delivers an EPIC final act to the soul-stirring, angst-ridden saga featuring one of my most beloved book couples OF ALL TIME!
Kennedy Ryan continues to ASTOUND with the sheer wizardry of her storytelling prowess …each book she writes is etched in pure effing gold! Her love and reverence toward this Soul series, and the pure poetry of her majestic prose, pours off each page as she gives #Kaison devotees the ULTIMATE hand crafted valentine to treasure forever.
This third and (sob!) final book picks up a few months after DOWN TO MY SOUL left off, and if we thought we knew the full extent of the passionate, all-consuming love that tethers this duo together, well…. we AIN’T SEEN NOTHING YET!
Rhyson Gray is even more FIERCELY, FEROCIOUSLY ALPHA than ever before —his crazy intense protectiveness and possessiveness toward his beloved Pep knows no bounds. And sweet and soulful Kai Pearson worships her primally sexy lover right back with the same unbridled ardor!
Speaking of electrifying passion…holy smokes these lovebirds are INSATIABLE and their carnal lust is intertwined with so much breathtaking tenderness and heart throbbing emotion that I was swooning like a starry-eyed schoolgirl.
But, alas, as deeply in love as this dynamic duo is, there are still some bumps in the road as the price of fame and glory takes a CRUSHING toll!
“Do you have faith in anything, Rhyson?”
“Her,” I whisper, my breath fogging the window. “Just in her.”
I knew that REFRAIN would pack a punch but I had NO CLUE how deeply it would resonate in my heart. I truly experienced so many euphoric highs and knee-buckling lows throughout that my feelings were all over the map!
So prepare for spellbinding romantic developments that will leave you giddy with delight, raw, explosive discord, red-hot passion galore, and a gut-wrenching act of valor that will BRING YOU TO YOUR KNEES!
And yes, Kaison’s faith will be tested as old jealousies and insecurities, new foes, and pulse-pounding peril pushes them to the BRINK. But rest assured that through it all, their extraordinary love permeates the darkness, casting these cherished lovers in a beautiful halo of bright blinding light!
I am not gonna divulge any spoilers of how all the drama pans out, but I will say that this final book was EVERYTHINGI could have ever dreamt of AND MORE for this legendary couple. I probably shed more happy, ugly, cathartic tears in this third book than the first two combined. And when all is said and done, it was indeed the perfect gift-wrapped denouement for Kaison fans!
BOTTOM LINE:
REFRAIN struck an indelible chord in my heart and soul! I just could not love this couple any more if I tried, and I cannot recommend this author or the SOUL series highly enough! And while bidding Rhyson and Kai adieu is indeed bittersweet, this resplendent novel beautifully sets the stage for Grip and Bristol’s highly acclaimed saga!!!!!
These books stand as one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE romance series. My words cannot adequately describe the love affair I have with Kennedy Ryan’s writing. So refreshing and evocative and engaging. Refrain comes as the third book in Rhyson and Kai’s story and is a MUST READ continuation about what happens after the happily ever for now. This authors brilliant story telling, descriptive prose, and unforgettable characters resurface brilliantly in Refrain for another truly beautiful installment in the lives of these beloved characters. Two people for whom I’ll never forget in a truly unique story.
When I started reading Refrain the first thought that came to me was how much I’d missed Kai and Rhyson. It was so easy to get back into the story of them. It was almost as if they were a part of me. Every emotion I had and went through while ready My Soul To Keep and Down To My Soul came back in a flash and I was enveloped in a bubble of love. Love for these two fabulous characters and the love for Kennedy Ryan’s writing.
One thing that has been a constant for me besides Kai and Rhyson’s relationship as lovers was their friendship. That’s what resounded for me throughout the series. It was perfectly founded in My Soul To Keep and my connection to them was immediately. It only strengthened in Down To My Soul and now in Refrain.
I love that they are each other’s confidants. They are so content and honest with one another that their love shines so clear. It was intoxicating and powerful. I was literally addicted to their love. It hit me straight in the heart.
Kennedy Ryan delivered a perfect conclusion to Kai and Rhyson’s story. This story solidified what was apparent in My Soul To Keep. They were each other’s constants. Soul mates. Ryan created an intense and at times suspenseful story but the primary focus was always Kai and Rhyson’s friendship and love. The love between them was hot. Off the charts but it was necessary to the story. They need the connection, the intimacy and it was hauntingly beautiful.
Ryan’s writing was flawless and impeccable as always. This series, Soul, was a mesmerizing story of all consuming love and friendship. Simply perfection.

This book had it’s ups & downs, love, heartbreak, tragedy – you name it. But, that seemed to be how Rhyson and Kai’s story had been like – so it was a proper and fitting ending to the Soul Series. So much love for these characters, and I’m glad we still get to see them in Bristol & Grip’s story! Kaison forever 🙂

#Kaison 4ever & Always
REFRAIN is the most perfect and fitting final installment for Kennedy Ryan’s Soul Series. The unconditional love that Kai Pearson and Rhyson Gray share is exquisite and so very real. I wondered if there was any way that it could be more passionate or more intense than it already was.
Kai’s deep southern roots and her abiding faith combined with Rhyson’s genius and his abiding faith in Kai mad for a beautifully brilliant and unforgettable conclusion. The love that drives them was breathtaking at every turn.
Watching them grow as individuals and grow as a couple is eye-opening. Seeing them navigate the treacherous twists along their journey was hair-raising and heart-stopping. Witnessing Maison build a world which included family both related and unrelated by blood was wondrous.
I was captivated by each paragragh in this book. The scope of the love between Kai and Rhyson is infinite and legendary. I was truly sad to know I had reached the conclusion when I turned the last page and read the final word. Kennedy Ryan has written an ageless story of love and life at will remain embedded in my heart and mind.
Can I just gush and fawn and drool over how dirty and delicious Rhyson Gray is in this book?!? Because Oh.My.Lanta. he is! He’s always had this understated alphaness to him, but in Refrain we get to see it come through in all its glory…and it is so, so glorious.
But we’ll come back to that…because there is so much more to this story than just Rhyson and his extreme and utter sexiness. Refrain gives us a perfect look into the hea of Rhyson and Kai, although not without a few trials and tribulations. But what I so loved about this book was the fact that Kennedy didn’t put the relationship between Kai and Rhys in jeopardy- there’s no unnecessary drama between them, no secrets, and no lies…the happiness and the love they share is magnified tenfold in Refrain. There’s drama, yes, but it all comes from outside their relationship. And not to say things are perfect between them- with Kai’s career taking off and Rhys getting Prodigy off the ground, time and distance put a toll on the couple. But they’ve both grown so much in the time they’ve been together, and apart, that they are now better able to handle all these little, and not so little, things that are thrown at them.
I am so happy that Kennedy gave us more Kaison. I would have been happy with Down to My Soul being the end of their story, but I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that she listened to her fans and gave us this bonus story. I absolutely loved this series- I adore Rhyson and Kai, and all the supporting characters. Seriously, Rhys is now a member of my exclusive bbf hall of fame…I can’t even handle the awesomeness that is Rhyson Gray.
