I was really curious how this story would work with the MC switching between a female and male body but holy hell what Yumo created here is sooo much more than I expected!
She not only managed to balance two different sides of one character but also created a wonderful and stunning World of magic, tragic incidents, intruiging plot twists and side characters that are amazingly designed!!!!! It also includes tough topics like bullying without being too earnest the whole time.
It just has everything an abnormally unique books needs:
All the feels, sass, moral content, lovable and complex characters, tension and diverse hotties with depth!
The concept of this book was interesting, very reminiscent of that movie She’s the Man with a reverse harem twist.
When I first attempted to read this book, I couldn’t finish it. I’ve always loved this authors books in the way that they address serious issues such as bullying and acceptance, so I was so upset when there came up a scene of slut shaming. I immediately stopped reading the book and wrote a 2 star review.
A few months have passed and I decided to pick it back up, give it another try. I’m so glad I did! Granted, I still absolutely hate that particular scene which is why this is 4 stars and not 5. I expected better from this author. However, once I got past that I seriously loved it. The world and character building is seriously amazing and intriguing, I love that there is so much growth of the characters throughout the book. And of course the steamy scenes were seriously sexy!
I decided to read this book/series, because I really liked the author’s Crimson Storm and Bloody Desires series.
Personally, I’m a big fan of this book. I know that there are some reviews that aren’t, but not everyone is going to love every book. For me, I really like Jewel as a character. She’s gone through a lot and has been overwhelmed, and she finally has a chance at a break. Is the plot a little unbelievable? Maybe, but let’s be honest – this is a book about magic and a girl attending an all boy’s school. It’s not meant to be believable; it’s meant to be an escape, and I think Yumoyori Wilson does that. It is a little angsty, yeah, but the characters aren’t much older than teenagers. They’ve lived at home their whole lives, and you have a pack of guys who expected to be surrounded by testosterone who now have a woman living with them. There’s bound to be issues. It’s an exciting, sexy book, and I like where the series is going.
1. Just how cool is it to finally read a reverse harem gender-bender? Since I started out as a reverse harem fangirl through numerous anime series, I have been exposed to scenes where the heroine has to pretend as a male student attending an all-boys academy. And color me intrigued when I learned of it in this book.
2. Yumo, duh, enough said.
However, it is unfortunate that I can’t give this one all five stars. There has been a recurring theme that’s been ok with me once, twice…even the third time. The fourth time, I’m kind of hesitant. And now it doesn’t work for me. I guess it’s not for me.
There are also a few inconsistencies and a few unexplored aspects but I’d gladly see and read book 2, if ever.
Sorry no spoilers. So all I’m going to say is this book is it’s completely amazing I loved it, and I’m going to leave it at that because if I go any farther I’ll be giving away spoilers! First time reading anything by Yumoyori Wilson and I got to say she’s awesome at creating and weaving her stories! I definitely will be checking out more of her work in the future. So yes I most definitely recommend this book to anyone who’s interested in crawling into this story and getting completely lost within its pages!
Jewel/Jinn. Jewel has suffered so much loss in her life already; the deaths of her father and dear brother Gabriel and the deterioration of her mother due to Alzheimer’s. She feels the weight of the responsibility to care for her mother and make her happy, but it’s difficult when her mother doesn’t see her but her deceased brother when she looks at Jewel. When her mother pulls some strings and gets Gabriel enrolled in the all-male school, Brighten Magic Academy, Jewel decides to ‘become’ her cousin Jinn and attend the academy with her best friend/boyfriend Logan. Acing the entrance exam Jinn and Logan are housed with 6 other mages of similar abilities. It takes all of one day for Jewel’s secret to be revealed but everyone is in agreement that she should stay as part of their team. A girl using magic, pretending to be a guy in a demanding academy living in a house full of sexy guys. It’s going to be a very interesting year.
Reflections of You is extremely entertaining. Jewel is powerful, loving, sweet, an all-around lovely girl. Alice is the best friend you will wish you had. The guys are awesome. Logan is pure perfection, always putting Jewel’s happiness and safety first. I’m not sure he was always written realistically; he agreed way too quickly to share the love of his life with others. I loved him anyway. The only negative thing I can say about him is that he went from being romantic and sweet the entire book to being less than romantic and sweet after his first time with Jewel. It was out of character. Nixon, Maximus, Braxton, Kage, and even his twin Zane were all accepting and sweet. I look forward to more time with them in future books. Braxton has the potential to equal Logan as a terrific character. The guys made this book even more amazing. I do believe that the series has nice potential because of the intriguing magic, the great guys, the gender-bending role, and the normal angst that accompanies a live-in school and relationships.
I really like Jewel/Jinn, she has been through a lot, and she is still working on dealing with her brothers death and her mom’s Alzheimer’s, but she is strong. I like that Logan has been there for her, he at times seems a little too perfect, but I still liked him. I really liked the other guys too – especially Braxton 🙂 They were all accepting and supportive.
As always, The story has the underlying message about acceptance and love, but also focuses on the impact of bullying and peer pressure. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I so loved this book! It has a story line that follows a plot I could not have dreamed of before as the MC hides at an all boy magic school even though she is a girl. I was laughing, cheering, fanning myself, and so much more as the story went on. The characters are so well developed I feel like I have known them forever and the world building is so awesome I want to live there myself. If you are a fan of PNR RH novels then this is a must read. I absolutely loved it so it gets 5/5 stars and I will be waiting anxiously for the next installment.
I absolutely love Jewel! As a young girl, she experienced a lot of heartbreak. As she grew up, her best friend Logan was always there for her ad her sick mother. But Logan gets excepted to an all male maic school. Then when Jewel gets excepted to the same school, she has to attend in a male form named Jinn. With the help of Logan and team of friends, Jewel/Jinn and her amazing familiar Alice have to end the cycle of extreme bullying at the school that has resulted in death before. Amazingly written, full scale of emotion with this book! I can’t wait for the next book in this series to see what happens with Jewel/Jinn and their team!
