While I didn’t happen to read any of the Redwall books as a child, I have to say that I enjoyed the first in the series immensely as an adult! Jacques has a real knack for dialogue and creating a vivid atmosphere, not to mention his descriptions of food (this was the main thing I repeatedly heard about the Redwall books, and I’m happy to say that I was not disappointed). Surprisingly dark and violent in places, this was a delight to read — and would be particularly fun to read aloud, I think! My only critique is that, since this is a middle grade book, the good/evil characters are pretty starkly black and white when it comes to their moral compasses. I understand why this is so in a book for children, but I would have appreciated a little more complexity.
The world of Redwall is full of colorful people and a well fleshed out world. You often forget these are mice and badgers and other woodland creatures but see them as people fighting for their homes and their loved ones. They are not difficult reads, but they are detailed and entertaining and if you look at them, do provide some thought-provoking looks at society.
I grew up loving the world Brian Jacques created with the Redwall books and I still love the characters and the journeys they take.
Redwall is a big adventure about little creatures. Matthias the mouse discovers his destiny is to find Martin the Warrior’s sword in order to protect Redwall Abbey from Cluny the Scurge and his band of ruthless vermin. While Matthias searches to locate the lost sword, the Woodland creatures band together to fight against Cluny’s bloody attacks. Brian Jacques creates this amazing fantasy world that is easily recognizable and amazingly fun to discover! Thank goodness there are many more books available to read in there series!
A fantastic adventure for all ages and the start of a true classic.
Redwall by Brian Jacques – I inhaled these in middle school. It’s the perfect introduction to high fantasy for a younger reader. Every single Brian Jacques book has this lull about 1/2 of the way through the story. Ride out the lull!! The last third of every single book is worth the set up! Matthias is one of my favorite characters ever! Happy Reading!
This series of books is something you want to read to get away from our current reality.
I read this book in high school and I’ve I picked it up I literally did not put it down until I finished it the following day.
Welcome to Redwall Abbey, home of mice, badgers, and all manner of woodland creatures who live together in peace. That is until Cluny the Scourge sets his eyes on the abbey. Cluny is a vile rat who will not hesitate to kill to get what he wants. And he wants to claim the abbey as his own. Matthias, with the heart of a warrior, urges his fellows to rise up and defend the abbey. But can the untrained, and unprepared abbey creatures defeat a roaming band of villains?
Brian Jaques has a beautiful way with words. As he builds the foundation of the Redwall world, you can’t help but feel comforted and at peace. Like you’re walking into a warm home full of old friends and happy memories. Each character he spends just enough time with and the history of Redwall comes together in a heartfelt tale. You can’t help but cheer the abbey creatures on as they defend their home.
As a teen, I loved the mystery element Brian Jacques included in Redwall. To defeat Cluny, Matthias must find the sword of Martin the Warrior. And reaching the sword involves solving a rhyme left by past abbey mice. When I first read this book, I wracked my brain trying to solve the puzzle. And it was satisfying to follow Matthias on his journey to retrieve the sword. But of course, nothing can be easy, and Matthias’s quest to reclaim the sword is an exciting journey to undertake.
Redwall was one of the introductory fantasy worlds I fell into as a teen. As an adult, I enjoyed it just as much as when I first read it. If you have a teenager interested in the fantasy genre, give the Redwall series a try. It is age-appropriate, and while there are battles, Brian Jacques never goes too far with detail. Readers will find themselves immersed in a thrilling tale they will not want to put down.
One of the most descriptive books I have ever read with a beautiful story and amazing world building and visualisation. Made me forget the animals were animals.
a great book for middle grade readers (5th-8th grade) who enjoy fantasy. one of my childhood favorites.
This book was an incredible part of my childhood. Yeah, it’s simple and cheesy and filled with tropes- but it does it all so well. This was my intro to fantasy and I love it. Also, the way Brian Jacques describes food still makes me hungry to this day!
One of my all time favorite series! I love each and every one! A great book for young adults, and adults alike! I’m in college, and still read these, and enjoy them each! Good for animal lovers, adventures, and those who just like a good tale of good over evil!
Brian Jacques takes you on an epic journey from woodland creatures. If you like any of Tolkien’s work, then you will love to read Redwall.
I loved this book and the others I’ve read by this author. In fact, I should get back to finishing the series!
This was my first book reading about animals who had their own adventures in this fashion and I absolutely loved it. The book was so well written and amazing that I immediately bought the rest of the series.
One of my all time favorites!
Redwall by Brian Jacques is the first installment of the series Redwall. Redwall Abbey is home to peaceful mice, and other woodland creatures. When their abbey is threatened by Cluny the Scourge, the peaceful residents of Redwall Abbey have to defend, and fight for what they hold dear.
I absolutely adored this story! The creatures came to life on the pages, and the world building is quite beautiful. This story grabbed me, and wouldn’t let go. There were moments when I laughed out loud, and there were moments when my heart was broken. There were a few grammatical errors, but did not hinder my flow of reading at all. This is a wonderful middle grade fantasy story; I highly recommend it.
Loved this book and the 21 that followed. Great series!
One of my family”s favorite books.
