RED RIVER RIFLES, from Amazon bestselling author Dorothy Wiley, continues the highly-acclaimed Wyllie family saga. Kicking off her new Wilderness Dawning–the Texas Wyllie Brothers Series, this remarkable novel is set in a time and place when life was tough. And love had to be even tougher. In 1818, the bravest of the brave settled a narrow strip of land along the Red River in Texas. A place where … Texas. A place where death and life held equal strongholds–the new leading edge of the West was an exceedingly dangerous place. For Samuel Wyllie, his family’s land south of the Red River at Pecan Point was a nearly sacred place, as beautiful as heaven must be. He has big plans for the future and will do what it takes to carve a new life out of the wilderness.
Louisa Pate and her young brother Adam, new arrivals in the settlement, are subjected to the tyranny of a cruel father. He intends to marry her off for profit and power to a brash filibuster who plans to challenge the Spanish for control of Texas. She also faces a frontier teeming with Indians, raw wilderness, deadly quicksand, and men who would use her for their own gain. Denied any chance for happiness, she is determined to survive and protect her little brother. And she will do what she must for Adam’s sake, even enter into a loveless marriage.
But even on this lonely frontier, Louisa is not truly alone. Time and again, Samuel boldly stands between her and disaster. The vastness of Texas is not big enough to hold his courage or his love. Yet love is not easily won and life in the West challenges them both. Help comes in the form of a unique trapper named Old Bill, a solitary, spirit-like Caddo brave named Kuukuh, and Samuel’s father and three brothers.
A gritty western, a love story, and a gripping tale of the first daring settlers of Texas, Wiley’s storytelling is stronger than ever. This well-researched story of the frontier and the pursuit of the American dream is a clean, yet romantic historical set against the stunning backdrop of the Province of Texas.

This is, without question, Wiley’s best work yet. It is an epic adventure, a touching love story, and a legendary tale of the early Texas frontier. She breathes life into memorable heroes struggling to survive in a savage new land where life is cheap and bloodshed is common. Based, in part, on the lives of real Texans, the Wyllie family meets danger head on again and again without ever losing their integrity. Despite brutal elements, dangerous adversaries, and tribes out for revenge, love blossoms and endures. Beautifully researched, and meticulously crafted, Dorothy Wiley will astonish you with this memorable novel.
This was an amazing book filled with love, hate, pride, fear, hope and honor! This was definitely a wild time in our history and it was a difficult period with hostilities from one’s own family, the natives, Mexicans, Spanish, Americans and the wildlife!! Who could you trust?
Dorothy is an incredible story teller and although this book is mild in the sexual context, it is writhed with danger only the untamed and unpoliced West could experience!
This is a WOW book! There are factual historical events; writings of actual ancestry; and, touching romance with the now grown children of Stephen Wyllie, our hero from the first series. From the very beginning in the American Wilderness Series, Stephen was the young family man that convinced his brothers to join him in the adventure of a lifetime. It took months and months but the family traveled hundreds of miles from the New England area to the new west in Kentucky.
Stephen’s oldest son, Samuel, is now 21, heads up the Red River Cattle Company and along with his brothers, is ready to fight off Indians, the Spanish Military and any other men who try to take the ranch as they have now settled in Texas. After one such battle with Indians, Samuel hears a plea for help and finds a young woman and small boy. Louisa and her brother, Adam, have survived their own Indian raid. The story of survival, friendship and Kuukuh, a Caddo Indian brave, is a book you won’t want to put down. I loved it and look forward to the next book in the series.
A clean romance
This was a good book with a lot of history. Some of the writing was a little corny, but still interesting.
In Red River Rifles, Dorothy Wiley has once again left me on the edge of my seat! Her amazing ability to draw us into the lives and history of the settlers of our great nation – through drama, love and peril – has resulted in one of her most heart-warming and suspense-filled works yet!
