“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”
“I live for you,” I say sadly.
Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”
Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.
But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.
Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

I’m rather late this to this series. I’ve seen the hype, and always have been tempted but never had the time to pick it up. But since I recently purchased the paperback on a whim, and after experiencing a small book slump it was finally the time to crack it open.
And WOW!!!! This is one of the books that deserves all the hype.
The beginning of …
I’m a little late to the party in reading this series. It’s been on my TBR list for a while. I’m going to review all three together, but will avoid spoilers. This is a wonderful series. At first I classified it as YA, but it’s really New Adult or a Crossover genre with adult. I also think it will appeal to sci-fi and fantasy fans because, while …
One of my new favorites. Highly engaging characters.
It’s a pretty dark version of the Hunger Games, and I loved the fact that it was gritty, brutal and had an unusual atmosphere to it.
The worldbuilding is pretty amazing – there is a whole new universe that seems to correlate with ancient understandings and values and is still set in the future.
BUT I felt like the atmosphere of the book was …
Think Game of Thrones meets Hunger Games meets Ender’s Game. If you love dystopian books and sci fi you should read this book. I read the entire trilogy in under a week.
I recently picked up the fourth in this series. The fifth has a release date. The series has action and an interesting political twists in the dystopian storyline. Cannot recommend this series enough.
Like Hunger Games for adults but set in space and with a touch of Game of Thrones. The first 3rd was a bit slow, at least for me, but then it really took off and I couldn’t put it down. Don’t read this expecting a sci-fi feel. Space is just the setting. This reads more like dystopian\fantasy and less like a space opera.
An unexpected sci-fi novel. A little bit Ender’s Game. A little bit The Hunger Games. A whole lotta awesome!
Great world building, Great characters, Great world, Great action….just GREAT!
Awesome! Very well written. Love the characters
I love this series!
Amazing, you’ll love it. Doesn’t matter who you are.
I loved it ! The characters are engaging and unforgettable. The battle/fight scenes are exciting and I felt as though I was as watching a movie. I laughed and cried throughout this story and immediately bought the second book in the series, Golden Son; which is equally as good.
This is a dark twisted tale that will blow your mind at every turn with surprise twists and an intricate story. It is filled with lots of action and strategy.
Wow. It has been a while since a book has hooked me right from the first page. The best dystopian novel I have ever had the pleasure of reading. This book will stay with me for a long time …
Excellent book. The beginning of an out of this world series.
While I did enjoy some parts of the story it just felt a bit too cold and strangely paced for me, in the beginning everything was drawn out, and towards the end everything was compressed and a lot of stuff was omitted.
This book is fast paced and is a fascinating read.
Love love love these book! It was so much better than I expected.
Amazing book! Best one I’ve read in awhile. Stayed up late a couple nights delving deeper into the plot. I’m now starting the second book.
I totally did NOT get the hype about this book.
The first portion of this novel was so compelling: learning of the Red culture, admiring the strength of the people and becoming aghast at the lie they were forced to live. I was excited to see how the struggle, the uprising and eventually the revelation would play out.
Then everything changed, and …
