“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”
“I live for you,” I say sadly.
Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”
Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.
But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.
Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

I think I would have to say that the Red Rising Trilogy is my favorite science fiction series of all time. Yes, I said it, ALL TIME! Reds, Golds, Obsidians, Pinks, Blues, you won’t be able to stop turning the page!
LOVED this book!!
Darrow – the things he goes through. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen next, there’s a twist. Just when you think you know who to trust, there’s a betrayal. Just when you think you know what the overall purpose of something is, you’re like wait… what the hell?
And then you remember that these are teenagers. …
Warning! This book begins like other books (Hunger Games, Divergent, etc.), but somewhere around 30-40% through the book, it matures into an epic of it’s own.
PRO’s : Character roles are well defined and done in a creative and enjoyable way. When characters break these roles, it is intended, very meaningful and contributes to what makes me …
This book will keep you awake into the wee hours of the morning so don’t start it unless you have a good chunk of free time in your future. I could not put this book down! The best description of this novel is Ender’s Game meets Hunger Games meets the movie Gattaca and Pierce Brown keeps you engaged in this Sci-Fi thriller from beginning to end! …
Red Rising is the first volume of a five-book series. I’ve read the first three, which complete the arc of a story. I gather the last two develop another story in the aftermath of what happens in the trilogy.
The premise is that humans have colonized and terraformed other planets in the solar system. After the colonists win a war with the mother …
At first I thought this would be Hunger Games on Mars, but it’s so much more than that. Beautifully written, the tortured hero is one you’ll fall in love with.
Once I read to where Darrow “dies,” I did not want to put this book down. I was told this is a combination of HUNGER GAMES and GAME OF THRONES, but I even see parts of JULIUS CAESAR in this story line. Brown incorporates several names from Shakespeare plays and Greek and Roman mythology. I wanted to read to find out if Darrow would succeed in his …
This is a good one, people. I’m currently on the fourth book in the series, and looking back, it’s hard to describe this first novel when compared to the others or the overall storyline. It sets up monumental scenarios, and introduces characters who you will either be rooting for or loathing. This first installment, as futuristic as it is, has a …
Imagine Hunger Games, but on Mars. Really, really enjoyed Red Rising.
Love this series
A slow build, and a gripping emotional dystopian solar-system spanning sf story. Excellent on audio.
I finally saw that the third book in this series was available, so I had to reread the entire series. As I again enjoyed the fantastic world, lovable/hatable/believable characters, and action packed story, I remembered why I was anticipating the final book so much. I hope that you emerge yourself into this world and enjoy it as much as I am.
If you haven’t read this book you are seriously missing. If you like Enders Game and The Hunger Games, this is up your ally.
This book, for me, was one of the most addictive reads I’ve ever had the pleasure of consuming. The characters – my goodness! Later in the series I reacted to an event in such a visceral way, I threw the book across the room and shouted, “NO!” I then refused to finish the book, I was SO angry with the twist. I was encouraged to finish it, and I …
Red Rising and the first three books of its series gave me enormous inspiration and insight into how to craft worlds and characters.
This book hooked me from the first moment to the last. It was full of action and emotion that kept me reading. I loved the dystopian vibes mixed with sci-fi and fantasy, and I can’t wait to keep reading this series!
I was initially drawn to this book based on the synopsis. The book quickly took a turn and basically became a much more boring hunger games on Mars. Parts were interesting but overall it was just “meh”.
To change everything you must become your enemy…and remember who you are and not get lost in the lie
Red Rising was a little slow to begin with. I just did not connect with the main character until about 60% in. Then something chaged. At that point, the novel just came alive as I found myself sucked into the story. The narrator and author do an amazing job. And the rest of the books keep up the momentum. Truly an epic series that I would …
I prefer the audiobooks of this series. Definitely listen to it if you can.
