Winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel • Discover the novel that launched one of science fiction’s most beloved, acclaimed, and awarded trilogies: Kim Stanley Robinson’s masterly near-future chronicle of interplanetary colonization. “A staggering book . . . the best novel on the colonization of Mars that has ever been written.”—Arthur C. Clarke For centuries, the barren, desolate landscape of … the barren, desolate landscape of the red planet has beckoned to humankind. Now a group of one hundred colonists begins a mission whose ultimate goal is to transform Mars into a more Earthlike planet. They will place giant satellite mirrors in Martian orbit to reflect light onto its surface. Black dust sprinkled on the polar caps will capture warmth and melt the ice. And massive tunnels drilled into the mantle will create stupendous vents of hot gases. But despite these ambitious goals, there are some who would fight to the death to prevent Mars from ever being changed.

Robinson does an excellent job of explaining the science and the controversies surrounding this effort to settle and transform Mars into a livable planet.
Provides a lot to think about.
I was not enjoying this book: deleted it from my Audible. Over the top technical jargon! I was hoping this book/ series would be similar to Red Rising, by Pierce Brown
Really a superb book describing the first settlers – primarily scientists – on Mars. You follow them through a couple of decades of progress. Not fully described, there are some interesting implications to the “lack of supervision” from Earth as a series of often not-complimentary separate social groups develop. Don’t want to give much away other …
Quick, easy reading. Entertaining story with interesting characters. Looking for a sequel.
Not a bad storyline, interesting premise but it did feel like some of the dialogue drug on.
way too wordy, went on and on with no progress to story
Read this a few years ago, and had to read the series again. Just starting green mars and enjoying also. Very thought provoking.
I enjoyed reading this book. Would like to read more.
Really a fine book. I’ve been recommending it to friends.
The best scifi book I have ever read. A thought provoking, science based novel of the terraforming of Mars.
A huge disappointment. Not at all what I expected. I found the book difficult to follow, and found far too much “blood and guts”, and far too little “Mars” for my taste. Sorry I bought the other two books in the series after reading the first couple of chapters. If I’d have read more of Red Mars first, I would have saved my money on two books …
Interesting andentertaining
The last word on settling on Mars
Hard science fiction at its best.
One of my favorites.
Excellent sci-fi series
