Twists & turns of the human psyche. Couldn’t put it down!
Almost as scary as The Silence Of The Lambs!
Classic for a reason. Chilling, edge of your seat but not with the lights out!
As the book details the hunt for a psychosexual murderer, you get oblique details of his sickening crimes, but there is little first-hand violence described. There is a glimpse into the inner life of the killer and a dispassionate description of the abuse he suffered as a child. The book has a couple of scenes from his everyday life that might lead the reader to think, “Hey, this guy is sorta cool.” The immediate realization that this is a person who slaughters men, women, and children without apparent conscience makes that thought a bit uncomfortab!e. The introduction of Hannibal Lecter alone makes the book worth reading. The conflicting emotions the book arouses move the book beyond the average crime thriller.
I love anything Tom Harris! Or Hannibal Lector 🙂
The plot keeps you glued to the book! Would definitely recommend.
Couldn’t put it down
Loved it! Great storyline and characters .
Thrilling horror!!!
A great book you don’t want to miss. In Silence of the Lamb series. Love his stlye. Real page turner. Recommended.
Loved it
This was actually my very first ebook when I read it a few years back. It’s a wild, crazy, suspenseful, scary, rip-roaring beast of a serial killer thriller with some incredibly compelling characters and the odd laugh-out-loud moment. I think it’s right up there with Silence of the Lambs for Harris’s best (and most disturbing) book.
Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon is one of the few books that changed crime fiction forever. This story is so tight, the characters so real, the novel so original, Red Dragon (along with The Maltese Falcon) are the only two books that are on every author’s ten best list that I admire. Red Dragon is a truly one of a kind find, and a must read for anyone who enjoys reading!
If you haven’t read Thomas Harris, love edge of your seat suspense, making sure you lock your doors at night and ready to get the s*~t scared outta you, you’re missing out on a great author!!! Happy reading peeps
Pretty close to a perfect thriller. The sequel “Silence of the Lambs” made a bigger splash, but this is the better book (although they are both pretty damned good). To the best of my knowledge, “Red Dragon” kicked off the serial killer/mindhunter profiler genre that is still popular today.
My favorite Harris book. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to explore the psychology of a serial killer.
This is the book that made me appreciate Thomas Harris as a skilled writer. A great villain is what drives a story. Villains are human and have their own hopes and dreams. They think they have reason to act as they do. There’s nothing more tragic than to realize the human moments even the baddest of the bad could have.
This is a horrible book, and I mean that in the best possible way. Hannibal Lechter has become synonymous with evil and this book relates events prior to those in The Silence Of The Lambs. Not for the squeamish.
This is Harris’s introduction of Hannibal Lecter and the initial pivot point for all the Lecter based novels. Turned into a movie with “Manhunter”, a 1986 version staring William Petersen (arguably best version) and the 2002 “Red Dragon” with Ralph Fiennes as the warped Geek and Edward Norton as the FBI profiler.
The book is better than either movie. Read it.
Well I wanted my scary/spooky read this month and I got it.
Not sure there is much to say about this book other than I understand now why it was such a hype and still is. It is one hell of a a dark and twisted book and while at times I wanted to hide or throw up I loved every bit of it.
The writing I had to get used to, all the different POV were a bit confusing at once but caught on pretty fast. Though for a book that advertised “THRILLER THAT CREATED DR HANNIBAL LECTER” we don’t get that much of him. I assume that will change in future books.
I liked Will Graham for the most part and his thinking and his head-space, what I could not really connect to was his relationship with Molly . It just felt off and odd.
Dolarhyde, oh he was a whole other category off messed up, even as we go into his really messed up childhood I didn’t know if that should be an excuse or not. But its clear early on that he has some severe issues and as the story goes on it just gets worse and we follow him coming undone more and more.
I have to say though as we get to the end or close to, I was like well that was sort of anti-climatic but then we get the nice surprise …. Oh wow
That also goes for the very end which pretty much sets us up for more Lecter, or at least I’m hoping to.
It goes without saying that this book is not for people with a weak stomach or lighthearted, and should come with all the trigger warnings there are. That being said the books is hauntingly sick minded and twisted but I loved it. Few minor things but nothing really that jumps out, the things I had a problem with the most was the POVs but that’s about it.
I rate it 4.5
