Though I’m a former Army medic, I knew and did hang with some “ jarheads” as we called the Marines during my time in service back when. It’s been more years than I care to count, but if memory serves, my recollections plus those of my Marine friends say that the colonel is very accurate in his depiction of basic training for the “ recruit “. Any further advanced training, I’ll just have to take him at his word.
I enjoyed Ryck and his coming of age as both a man and a soldier. The story moved through his live well and gave both reason and impetus to his choice.
I liked Ryck so much that I found myself still awake at 5:00 am finishing the book, and thinking, “ damn I’m going to have fun staying awake today”.
I know this is a series, so on we go to the next book.Seriously guys, if you like well written military action based in the future, this series is for you.
When you realize how early in his writing career retired US Marine Colonel Jonathan Brazee wrote this book, it is no wonder he’s gone on to be hugely successful. It’s packed with action, which is always made realistic because of the author’s background. Read this and you won’t be sorry.
Liked this series a lot! It is an action packed page turner, for sure.
to much gung-ho marine BS
Excellent military space novel. Excellent detail of a recruits life.
Good storyline
Borinf. Bogged down in way too much jargon and detail. We get it, the author knows his stuff, but I’m not in a lecture, I want to read a good story.
I like the Colonel’s books. My kinda space opera. Set them up so I can buy more for my NOOK.
I almost deleted it because it has a lot boring parts in it . I did finish it and wish I had deleted it . Too slow and very boring and very little action .
Character driven story. Intriguing premise.
Marine boot camp sort of.
Good character development. Somewhat action packed. Good introduction to the series. Will read the next installment.
If you are a military veteran, you will recognize the jargon and the training situations. If you are not, you will need time to wade through the training rituals in this book.
An extremely interesting storyline that follows Ryck Lysander’s evolution from high school, through boot camp and three tours of duty. You watch his personal growth, which anyone who has experience in the armed forces can truly relate to.
Very informed writer and well crafted characters
an entertaining novel
well written and entertaining.
Way too much detail. Very little story so lack of action.
The story was in a military setting, but I enjoyed the action.
This story gives a balanced view of a young man who joined the Federation Marine Corp. The protagonist is not always the hero but sometimes he is. He’s not always right but sometimes he is. I love the way Ryck is always honest with himself and I love that the tale has plenty of action while not building the book around blood and guts. Nice job!
