In New Orleans, a pair of undead serial killers is about to turn Mardi Gras into a horror show—unless the immortal hitman Bones can hunt them down first. From Jeaniene Frost comes a thrilling novella featuring characters from her New York Times bestselling Night Huntress series. Originally appeared in the anthology Unbound.
This one took a while for me to get into and it was short . I guess it was as a result of my brain adjusting to the unfamiliar genre. Overall, I’d say give it a try if you’re into Paranormal Romance.
Reckoning is a prequel novella in the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. I decided to read the prequel after I read the first book since I wanted to know how Bones (the male protagonist in the Night Huntress series) acted before he met Cat (the female protagonist in the series). Let’s say I’m glad I got to read his character in Halfway to the Grave before I read this novella. He did a complete 360 turn after he met Cat.
In this novella, he’s in New Orleans, and he’s focused on tracking down some serious ghoul serial killers. He’s not the light and fun bounty hunter vampire, but the dark and sad one that wants to complete his job and move on. (Don’t get me wrong, he’s dark in Halfway to the Grave, but he’s all ‘duty’ and no-fun in this novella.) He does meet a young lady in this book, but he’s using her to help him find the ghouls that keep wreaking havoc in NOLA. He’ll also have to deal with a red-headed vampire mercenary that is always in his way trying to kill him when he’s trying to find the killers.
This was a short novella that introduces readers to Bones world before he meets Cat in the first full-length novel in the Night Huntress series. I liked the prequel, but I didn’t love it. I loved knowing where Bones was before he went to Ohio and met the half-breed vampire, Cat, who turned his world upside-down. Bones is one sexy vampire that will be hard to forget if you read Halfway to the Grave.
I can’t wait to dive further into this series and can’t believe I waited this long to read it. What was I thinking?!
I give this novella 3.5-stars and recommend it to readers of the Urban Fantasy/PNR genres.
Reckoning is a prequel to the Night Huntress series. In this story you get to see Bones on a case before he met Cat. I really enjoyed getting to see this book take place and it can be read out of order without too much confusion.
This is going to be a super-short review as this is a novella and I don’t want to give up any details that will blow the story line. Short or not, there’s a great storyline to this one!
Bones, Bones, Bones….
If you are a fan of the Night Huntress series, you know who Bones is. Crispin “Bones” Russell is the snarky, sarcastic, alpha male lead for the series and he’s pure perfection as far as bad-ass vampire characters goes. He’s 100% lethal but with LOTS of personality. His sense of humor and wit is off the charts! And he’s the star of Reckoning!
Reckoning, being the Night Huntress series prequel, take place before book one of the series. The ONLY suck factor in that is if you’re already a fan of the series, you already love Bones and Cat together. Since he hasn’t met Cat yet in this installment, there’s obviously other women. I found myself feeling like I was witnessing Bones cheat on Cat and had to remind myself that I’m the dumbass reading the prequel AFTER reading the whole series.
The mystery in Reckoning, although short, is not lacking by any means. In true Jeaniene Frost fashion, the mystery is so well written that it’s not predictable at all. Always big with the twists and turns, she has written a novella that is just as gripping as the rest of the series.
If you have NOT read this series, I would suggest starting with Reckoning! This novella will give you a good picture of the way Bones works. He’s a great example of how a character can be a good guy that happens to do bad things and Reckoning paints a great picture of that. After Reckoning, read the rest of the series. I swear on all that is holy and not, you will LOVE this series!
Overall, I am giving Reckoning 5 stars! This one is a page burner!
New Orleans during Mardi Gras anything goes and that includes a ghoul serial killer. Bones is pulled into a supernatural fight that is more than it appears. It appears someone or something is hunting him. What does Bones do when the hunter becomes the hunted? Love the start of this series. It really sets the pace for the series. Bones is very hot and one vampire I wouldn’t mind meeting. Short but action packed story with plenty of twists and turns.
