Respect the Legend. Idolize the Prodigy. Celebrate the Champion. But never underestimate the Rebel. With unmatched suspense and her signature cinematic storytelling, #1 New York Times-bestselling author Marie Lu plunges readers back into the unforgettable world of Legend for a truly grand finale. Eden Wing has been living in his brother’s shadow for years. Even though he’s a top student at his … though he’s a top student at his academy in Ross City, Antarctica, and a brilliant inventor, most people know him only as Daniel Wing’s little brother.
A decade ago, Daniel was known as Day, the boy from the streets who led a revolution that saved the Republic of America. But Day is no longer the same young man who was once a national hero. These days he’d rather hide out from the world and leave his past behind. All that matters to him now is keeping Eden safe–even if that also means giving up June, the great love of Daniel’s life.
As the two brothers struggle to accept who they’ve each become since their time in the Republic, a new danger creeps into the distance that’s grown between them. Eden soon finds himself drawn so far into Ross City’s dark side, even his legendary brother can’t save him. At least not on his own . . .

The ending of Champion broke me. Rebel picked me up and put me back together, piece by tiny piece. If you loved the first three books in the Legend series, I guarantee you’ll love this one. It’s the perfect book to finish off an amazing series – one that I didn’t know I needed.
This book was like a freaking gift! I loved how the Legend series ended, but I always wanted more, needed more, and I finally freaking got it!
This one has perspectives from my boy, Daniel AKA Day, and his little bro, Eden. Eden was so young in the last one and I loved his character, so it was awesome to see how he turned out. He isn’t like Daniel in a lot of ways, but he’s brave like him! And he’s so smart, too!
I will say that the highlights for me were when June and Daniel were together! Seriously, I needed those moments in my life! There was swoon, there was action-packed stuff, brotherly love. Also, the addition of Pressa was awesome! She and Eden made such a great team. Thank you, Marie Lu, for making my heart grow while reading this story!
“Our lives have always been a war. Maybe that war won’t ever be over. But at the end of it all, we still have each other.”
I was so nervous about this book. I loved the trilogy and wanted to read more, as long as it didn’t ruin it. I think a lot of people felt that way.
Well, I am sooo glad Marie Lu wrote this book!!! I never expected it would be THAT AWESOME!!!
Rebel is filled with the same adventure and world building that we loved from the first three books! The characters … oh the characters … you will fall in love all over again with Day & June!! And I loved Eden!! I loved how it focuses on Daniel (Day) and Eden’s relationship!!! And then Pressa, Eden’s friend, she was a very welcomed addition!!!! I loved how the relationships in this book were so real, with all their trials and tribulations. Especially with the dark history that has affected them more than they want to admit.
This book definitely did not disappoint, it only added to my love of this series!!!
Rebel is a masterful feat written by a powerhouse author who never disappoints; every book she writes is a knockout. Marie Lu is magic.
Rebel was the suprise 4th book in what was supposed to be the Legend trilogy. And it’s own I have very mixed feelings about. There was something poignantly wonderful about the ending of Champion, when Day and June meet each other after a decade apart from one another. Even though it’s a moment without clear answers, without a glimpse into the future, there’s something beautiful about the possibilities.
This one was Eden’s story, as he finds his own way and purpose in the world. It hasn’t been easy, being the celebrated Day’s little brother. And he has frequently chafed at the bonds that his overly protective big brother has put on him. But as the story unfolds, their relationship changes in surprising ways.
As always, I loved the world-building. There were hints of the author’s future Warcross books at the end of Champion, more fully expanded in Rebel. It’s a world that has got threads of the merit system currently being developed in China, which makes it all the more frightening with its implications.
And June and Day… while this was mainly Eden’s story, it was also June and Day’s. They’d been apart for ten years at the end of Champion, and then there was even more separation before the start of Rebel. The feeling from the end of Champion, that they were meant to be, gets lost with the neverending half-relationship, all the time apart.
So I had mixed feelings. The storyline was good, but it just didn’t have the same magic as the previous novels.
My recommendation: Honestly, this was a take-it-or-leave it book for me. It was a good story, but it just didn’t add much to the fuller series.
*Actual rating: 3.5 stars*
This book was more interesting than Prodigy, but not as interesting as Legend. Maybe more like Champion, in my honest opinion.
I wasn’t really interested in the beginning. It went slow and didn’t feel like it was starting until around half way through the book. The beginning gives a lot of information on Antarctica’s technology (which I was glad to learn more about) and I loved seeing how Day and Eden work through their past traumas and relationship struggles. I liked seeing how the Republic is handling things after war and what happens to Day and June after the events at the end of Champion. It goes over different types of relationship tensions and how their lives have changed and are going. I think it could have been shortened at least a little bit though.
– SMALL SPOILER IN NEXT PARAGRAPH –
We don’t see Eden’s bullies after the Level system is shut down. I found myself wondering what was happening to them and how they were affected. They weren’t big characters in the beginning, and if they had nothing important to add to the story, then why add them? They just felt incomplete to me…
– SPOILERS ENDED –
I really enjoyed the ending of the book (especially the very last scene). Near the end, it picked up more speed and got interesting. I wanted to read it more than I had in the start. I think I may have started to go into a reading slump while reading the beginning of this book, but near the end I was partially pulled out of it, which was a relief.
I feel like it was mainly focused on Eden rather than Daniel, which was kind of disappointing for me because I would have liked it to be even between them. I enjoyed seeing their brotherly bond. In the last books we didn’t get to dive into it and really unpack it.
We got to meet new people that added to the story. Pressa has to be my new favorite character, with Hann closely following. This book gave me much more closure than Champion had, and I am glad to see how things worked out for June, Day, Eden, and the Republic.
It was a great ending to the legend series! This series has always been one of my favorites and catching up with the characters years later is just what you needed and didnt know you did!
