“Stephenson has a once-in-a-generation gift: he makes complex ideas clear, and he makes them funny, heartbreaking, and thrilling.”—TimeThe #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Neal Stephenson is continually rocking the literary world with his brazen and brilliant fictional creations—whether he’s reimagining the past (The Baroque Cycle), inventing the future (Snow Crash), or both (… inventing the future (Snow Crash), or both (Cryptonomicon). With Reamde, this visionary author whose mind-stretching fiction has been enthusiastically compared to the work of Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Kurt Vonnegut, and David Foster Wallace—not to mention William Gibson and Michael Crichton—once again blazes new ground with a high-stakes thriller that will enthrall his loyal audience, science and science fiction, and espionage fiction fans equally. The breathtaking tale of a wealthy tech entrepreneur caught in the very real crossfire of his own online fantasy war game, Reamde is a new high—and a new world—for the remarkable Neal Stephenson.

This book is one of my favorites books ever. It is just very imaginative and unpredictable. The characters are believable and the journey is quite unpredictable and very entertaining. Loved it.
I have enjoyed several of Stephenson’s books, particularly “Cryptonomicron,” and found this one nearly as good. His books are long and convoluted with several story lines, and with interesting characters. I found the resolution to be a bit of a stretch, but it resolved the various story lines.
Stephenson’s book are always a commitment. They are long and complex, but they delivery, especially this one!
Different from his usual style
Another “huge” book by Neal Stephanson, but this man is at the top of his game in this book! What a cool, action-packed movie this would make!!
A kid in China playing a MMP online game holds a file for ransom IN the game, and sets in motion a series of events that are at once outrageous and quite plausible. Action packed with great characters I can’t recommend this book enough. I’ve read it twice, currently working my way through it again (while I’m laid up after a major surgery). Great fun read!
One of my favorites from one of my favorite authors.
I enjoyed this book, modern day cyber thriller
This is officially the longest book I’ve ever read. But surprisingly I was never bored enough to quit it.
Neal Stephenson is known to be an author of tomes, and his true fans have embraced his signature info-dumps. I don’t consider a true fan of his, but I will say that his handling of info-dumps in Reamde is easy on the reader. Much more so than Snow Crash, the only other Stephenson book I’ve read.
Reamde is many different themes and concepts rolled into one. It’s a litRPG that has a number of passages taking place inside a game, its a thriller involving Russian mafia, Jihadists and hostages and it also has spies. With all these different themes in one giant plot, it seems easy for the book to become a complete disaster. But Neal Stephenson manages to pull it off and fit all these themes into a cohesive piece of fiction.
What I liked the most about Reamde was the characters, I think all of them are done really well and they make you care enough to keep reading despite the long drawn out plot.
This book could have easily been bumped down to about 700 pages, especially considering that the ending wasn’t anything special. But reading all 1044 pages feels like a personal achievement, which is why I went with 4 stars instead of 3.
But seriously, this book features two of the most drawn out action sequences ever. One of these actions scenes is literally a third of the book. If reading action is draining for you then this may not be for you.
I’ve read it twice, can’t wait for the movie.
If you are heavily into online games, you’ll probably love it. If not, you’ll likely have a tough time following it.
I put off reading this book for ages because it was so very long. Once I started it though, I enjoyed the heck out of it! I will warn readers up front that there is one plot point upon which most of the book hinges that seems completely unrealistic to me, but get over that and it’s smooth sailing. The action is nonstop, the characters are engaging and I’m still thinking about it months later.
one of my all time favorite books. the situations as the various tech communities world hop are histerical.
Few writers can manage such a large cast over a vast landscape with such ease. He does this beautifully, with a style very few others in science fiction or mainstream fiction can come close to–and in any area of writing. Every thing I’ve read by Stephenson has been superb, absolutely fine.
I first encountered Stephenson as a Second Life newbie, told Snow Crash was their bible. It was double-exciting in my newly found Virtual World.
I had avoided Reamde due to it’s length, but was more than rewarded. Truly EPIC, with less ancient philosophy.
Master storyteller who ‘owns’ current Tech cultural tastes
