Duncan McKinnon is on leave from the Army Rangers to help his brothers find their missing father. A chance meeting in the airport with the woman he’d seduced on his last trip home makes him want to launch a mission to rekindle their desire, but the timing is off. Fiona Guthrie left Eagle Rock, Montana after a short-lived love affair with the one guy she’d never stopped loving. Their one-night … one-night stand only reinforced the fact Duncan was the only man for her and the baby created from their short union. Now she’s running for her life and the life of their baby girl.
When Duncan learns Fiona and her little girl are in trouble, he vows to protect them with his life, not quite understanding the incredible connection he has to the little girl who looks like him. The threat plaguing Fiona might just expose a link to the McKinnon brothers’ missing father.

Since a synopsis of the story is available above I won’t tell you what this book is about. I’ll tell you that this romantic suspense story is worth your time to read. The story flows at a good pace between Duncan and Fiona’s romance to the suspense of crimes taking place in their town, and the continued search for Duncan’s missing father. This is the second book in the iron horse Legacy and could be read as a stand-alone, but the story arc of the missing James McKinnon starts in the first book and continues in the next book. You’ll definitely want to see which McKinnon brother or sister falls next!
A great story!
Ranger’s Baby is the second book in the Iron Horse Legacy series but you don’t need to have read the first one to enjoy this. I haven’t read it yet and didn’t feel lost when reading Ranger’s Baby. I do have to warn you though, there is a mystery that I’m sure began in book one that isn’t resolved in book two either. Other than that Ranger’s Baby is a complete story with an HEA for the couple featured in this story.
Fiona and Duncan were best friends growing up but Duncan didn’t realize that Fiona wanted more. After a one-night-stand he finally realized that she means a lot more to him than he ever admitted to himself. When he finds out that their one night together created a baby, that Fiona never told him about, he’s upset but determined to get to know his daughter.
I love “secret baby” stories and this one is really great. With Elle James’ signature blend of romance, intrigue and danger, this story kept me on the edge of my seat while reading it. I was a bit tense in anticipation of the climatic “event” of the story but when it came it was so much more than I could have anticipated.
Fans of Elle’s Brotherhood Protectors series will be happy to get a brief visit with some of the characters from that series. The Ranger’s Baby is another great book from one of my favorite authors and I can’t wait to read more in this series. While I don’t feel like this story really qualified as a cliffhanger, I’m anxious to read more in this series and to have the overarching mystery solved.
An advanced copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
Loved this read about Duncan, who is on leave while searching for his missing dad and recovering from an injury. While he’s home his B.F. Fiona is in trouble and ends up calling him for help. Not only that but she has another surprise for him, a surprise they conceived when he was home last months ago. Now he has a daughter and someone threatening his new family, while Fiona, who has a backbone of steel wants to go off on the ones who threatened her…can he protect them all.
A great read with some steam, some suspense and amazing characters. I LOVED these two and how easily Fiona slipped right back into with his family and how they all took to the news, especially Duncan, with a few laughs with diapers, that had me laughing out loud. I also loved their honesty and when the time came, open and honest communication which was very refreshing, as well as no jealousies, no lies, no other women, no running away and Fiona, her strength and nerves of steel. The story is not done yet and I CAN’T WAIT to see how it all ends and the next brother to fall.
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
I was hooked on this book from page one. The characters were amazing and the storyline held lots of surprises, romance, and suspense. Duncan and Fiona were best friends and one night changed everything. Who was after Fiona and why, she had to find out, along with keeping her baby safe. Duncan McKinnon is the baby’s daddy and a Ranger. Duncan has come back to help look for his dad who’s missing and then he finds out he’s a father. This is the second book in this amazing series and I highly recommend reading this one. I was lucky enough to get a copy thru the author and this is my voluntary review.
The story continues. The McKinnons are still looking for their dad. Duncan gets a frantic call from Fiona asking him to come right away. When he gets to her home, he finds out he has a six month old daughter. Fiona has been Duncan’s friend for a lot of years and months ago that changed when he spent one night with her. Their daughter was a result of that and she didn’t have the guts to tell him but when she was threatened, she knew that he would protect them and if anything happened to her, his family would take care of their daughter. While they are looking for his dad, they are trying to find the person threatening Fiona. Fiona has loved Duncan for a long time but she doesn’t want him to marry her just because of their daughter. Duncan does love Fiona, but how can he tell her so she will belive him?
This is book 2 in the Iron Horse Legacy series and it features Duncan and Fiona. The best of friends since fourth grade and one night with a little too much alcohol and surprise! He comes home from Afghanistan to find out he’s a daddy and someone is threatening their lives. Not only are they still looking for his father, James McKinnon, he must keep the woman he’s discovered he loves as more than a friend and their daughter safe. Does she feel the same for him?
The characters are fantastic and the story line has great action! What’s better than military alphas turned cowboys? Nothing, that’s what! Both times the author took us to the Faulkner‘s, I was holding my breath in anticipation. I can’t wait for the next book in the awesome series!
I received an ARC copy of this book and I voluntarily chose to review it. This one is well written as all of Elle James books are. I found it to be a quick easy read. This one is worth your time and effort. I have been reading Elle James for a long time so she is a favorite of mine. When you see Elle James on a book it will be a good one. Loved the characters, I can’t wait to see if they get their own stories.
ARC for honest review with no compensation
Ranger’s Baby is book 2 in the Iron Horse Legacy series by Elle James and while the story is a standalone is has an inner twining story that continues as a cliffhanger…
Duncan McKinnon, Army Ranger, hurt on his last deployment has come home to recuperate and to help his brothers find their still missing father. What he doesn’t expect is to see Fiona Guthrie his best friend from childhood and his one night fling before he deployed 15 months ago, who is now a deputy sheriff and the mother of a 6 month old baby girl named Caity.
Fiona knows its time to tell Duncan and his family that Caity is his daughter but she has been afraid that he will turn his back on them…but when her home is broken into and trashed who does she call but Duncan…
When you go from life long friends to lovers then add in a surprise you get a very engaging book filled with suspense, mystery, secrets, drama, heart felt emotions and a HEA!
Can not wait for the next book…
Another great book by Elle James. I’m never disappointed when I read her books. This is the second book in the Iron Horse Legacy series. You do not have to read the first book in this series to enjoy this book. It tells the story of Duncan McKinnon and Fiona Guthrie. Duncan is an Army Ranger and was hurt while on deployment in Afghanistan. Fiona is a deputy sheriff. The two grew up together and were best friends, then Duncan came home on leave and they had a one night fling. After he left, she found out that she was pregnant but didn’t let him or his family know. Now he’s home and she has to tell him that he has a daughter. That’s where this story starts. I was given an ARC for an honest review. I loved it. A great book! There’s romance, suspense, danger and lots of everything that I like in a book. I highly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
I absolutely fell in love with these two characters. Duncan McKinnon and Fiona Guthrie were childhood friends. Right before Duncan leaves for a 13 month deployment, he has a few beer at a local tavern. Fiona lives right next door and takes him home to sleep it off. Well one thing leads to another and Fiona welcomes a baby girl, Caity, into the world. Fiona tells Duncan that he is a father after her home in broken into and trashed. Duncan came home injured and to find his missing father (father went missing in the first book of the series and is the sub-plot running throughout the series).
The plot is well written and flows very nicely. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Duncan and Fiona’s story. This story is written in a dual POV format which is wonderful for me. Getting a glimpse into the characters’ thoughts and feelings really makes them feel human and me a part of the scene. There were some major potholes in their road to a HEA and I was glad to be along for the journey.
It only took me a nice afternoon to have a bookcation. I was sad to see this story come to an end but I look forward to another brother getting his HEA told.
There was a bedroom scene but it was not told in graphic detail so it really shouldn’t offend anyone but probably should only be read by someone over the age of 18.
I highly recommend this story to anyone. I would give this 10 stars if I could!!!!
Two people who have been best friends most of their lives have one night together 15 months ago before Duncan is shipped back overseas and it results in a little baby girl.
I really liked Duncan in this book. He is a strong, protective, proud man who at the moment has a lot on his plate. Will he return to active duty? Will they ever find his father? Is he alive? On top of all of this he finds out he is a father to a 6 month of baby girl. I think he takes the news pretty well considering. I loved that he loved Caity right away and wants to make up for the time that he missed. I have to say the first diaper he changed was hilarious.
There were times I liked Fiona and then there were times I couldn’t believe her thought process. Now that Duncan knows he is a father, she no longer is a single parent but some of the decisions she was making were careless. I understood her anger and frustration but the individuals they were dealing with were extreme and she knew it but it didn’t stop her.
Otherwise, she was a wonderful mother to her daughter. She had a great support system. I just wished she had told Duncan sooner.
Friends to lovers, a second chance and suspense, all in a fast moving story by Elle James. Although I had not read the first book, that did not interfere with understanding this one.
Fiona Guthrie has been in love with her best friend, Duncan McKinnon, since 4th grade, but as she was a tomboy, he kept her in the “friend” zone. After high school, Duncan leaves Eagle Rock, Montana to join the military, a family tradition and became an Army Ranger, while Fiona got a degree in criminal justice and is now a deputy with the local sheriff’s office. However, one night when he is on leave, Duncan gets a little drunk and allows her to “seduce” him. He wasn’t that drunk and knew exactly what he was doing with the beautiful woman that his best friend had became. However, he had to go back to Afghanistan the next day resulting in a misunderstanding between them. Fiona thought that Duncan had been so drunk, he would have been with anyone and when she stopped writing to him, he thought that he had messed up their friendship. So when she found out she was pregnant, she was afraid to tell him as she didn’t want him to lose focus and get himself killed. When the patriarch, James McKinnon, disappears, all the McKennon men get leave, except Duncan had been injured in a helicopter crash and was most likely will be medically retired.
He comes home to find his father missing, that he is now a father to 6 month old, Caity Hannah McKennon, and someone is threatening both Fiona and Caity. Can he keep Fiona and Caity safe? Can he convince his best friend that he loves her and wants to spend the rest of his life with her? Will James McKinnon be found? I loved the story, but was left with two unanswered question. Since Fiona had spent so much time when she was growing at the McKennon’s ranch, why she didn’t at least tell his parents and sister that she was pregnant with Duncan’s child. And who is William Reed? Fiona was looking for him when James disappeared, but at least in my copy, there was no explanation who he was.
I received a free ARC as a member of the author’s review crew. This is my unbiased and voluntary review. Can’t wait for the next book.
I really enjoyed this wonderful read. Duncan and Fiona’s story delivers an engaging and entertaining blend of emotions, drama, humor, danger, mystery, action, suspense and excitement. I loved the evolution of the relationship between this couple. From friends to lovers to more? Toss a surprise into the mix and this book will have you eagerly reading as you root for this pair. This is book two in this series and although there is an ongoing mystery that is unfolding throughout it, I feel that this book reads easily as a standalone.
Ranger’s Baby is an outstanding romantic suspense by Elle James. This is a fairly quick read, perfect for those with limited reading time. Ms. James has once again delivered a smooth, well-written book and populated it with a stellar cast of characters. Fiona is a deputy and single mom to a 6-month-old. Duncan is Fiona’s best friend and doesn’t know he’s the father of her 6-month-old baby. Surprise! Duncan and Fiona’s story is packed with drama, humor, sexy bits, action and suspense. I loved this book and look forward to my next book by Elle James. Ranger’s Baby is book 2 of the Iron Horse Legacy Series but can be read as a standalone. While the story of Duncan’s missing father from book 1 still lingers, this is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Prolific Works. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Loved Duncan and Fiona’s story. It captures your attention from the first page. Best friends to lovers, surprise baby, plenty of action and family. Can definitely be read as a standalone. I received a free copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a review
We are back in Eagle Rock, Montana with the McKinnon family still searching for the patriarch of the family while dealing with other family surprises.
Army Ranger Duncan McKinnon hasn’t been back in town for 15 months , during which time he was injured in a mission. Fifteen months he slept with his best friend Fiona, who is now a deputy and a beautiful woman. Little did he know that a child was conceived.
But when danger comes to Fiona’s door, Duncan comes to their rescue and face to face with his baby girl.
Amidst the danger, feelings grow but will they survive to find their HEA .
Another entertaining story in the series filled with suspense, family and romance.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Fiona Guthrie had a one-night-stand with her childhood friend Duncan McKinnon. Fiona had loved Duncan since she first got to know him but he had always just looked at her as a really good friend. Duncan was on his way the next day to a thirteen month deployment in Afghanistan. After being wounded there he was sent to a hospital in the USA and was recovering. When his father went missing he returned to Eagle Rock, Montana to help in the search. Now Fiona has a confession to make. Her adorable six month old baby girl is Duncan’s daughter. Hmm! Will these two end up marrying or not? Will they marry for love or family obligation?
Ranger’s Baby by Elle James is the second book in her Iron Horse Legacy series. In this story not only is there action and danger in Fiona and Duncan’s lives but Duncan’s father is still missing. He went missing in the first book in the series. Elle James has a super action and suspense story here. There’s missing evidence, murders and a whole family of suspects. I really enjoyed all the action and I especially enjoyed the interaction between Fiona and Duncan as they worked their way through their relationship. I love friends to lovers stories.
