I’m not going to lie: when I first found out Ms. Porter was publishing another book I was ecstatic. Then, when I realized said book was about Dig (Grace’s late husband) I was a little putout. I mean, do I really want to read about a dead guy? But of course, then I read the prologue and a tiny sneak peek into the first chapter, and I was absolutely hooked.
So yes, you will read about a dead guy… but I don’t believe that has prevented any of us before. I know I watched Leo go down as a frozen popsicle into the Atlantic one hundred gazillion times and I’d still probably watch a re-run if I ever caught it on cable (that I don’t have, but still, that’s not my point). So, as I was saying, even if we know where that part of the story is going, it still is a fucking beautiful one. One that should be enjoyed.
Let me start off by saying that I did not do a Lock & Key re-read before grabbing Random & Rare. So although roughly the first half of the book is Dig’s PoV of his and Grace’s life together, I didn’t find it boring or repetitive it just brought up what I remembered from before. I do know some of the girls, having all the L&K facts fresh from a re-read, found it a bit slow.
Even when I knew what was waiting around the corner for Dig, I couldn’t help but fall in love with him (I hate you Cat for that, just so you know). She has a way of writing that makes her character so real that you can’t stop yourself from feeling everything along with them on a visceral level. And what I mean by that is that there were several points in the story where I would actually look down and watch for the blood pouring out of me after that stabbing in my gut.
If you want your heroes to be perfect, politically correct Prince Charmings then this book is most certainly not for you. AT ALL. (Though in that case, I would encourage you to watch Prince Charming’s portrayal on Into the Woods, the Disney movie. It was a most welcome eye-opener that one.)
Dig is crass, tough, a fucking asshole a lot of times and not apologetic about it. He is what he is. And you take it or you leave it. I love how truthful his response to temptation was. Even though I love to read about the H who can’t even stand to look at another woman after he got his “one” we all know that is so not happening in real life. Men have eyes and they will look. Dig looked too, he wondered, he was tempted, but in the end (as we know from Lock & Key) he realized that what he would lose in that exchange was not worth it. For a nasty biker, I think he was really sweet and caring. The way he feels about Grace throughout his life was simply magnificent. I still get teary-eyed just thinking about it!
Sadly, after reaching the point in the story where Dig is no more a physical presence in Grace’s world, we fast forward to the events at the end of L&K. And I say sadly because life/destiny/karma, whatever you want to call it, is not done kicking Grace’s ass. No, my friend, she still has a lot of battles to fight, and heaps of shit to overcome. Her journey in this book is just wrecking. It will hit you in the chest, punch you in the stomach and I’m pretty sure it will leave you with tears running down your face, snot leaking from your nose, a used up box of kleenex and puffy eyes. Yes, and I had to go to work 3 hours after finishing it… let’s just say “Thank God I wear glasses”.
So, summing up, this very ranty and randomish review: Is Random & Rare a happy story? No, and I would certainly not recommend it for when you’re feeling blue. What I will say is that it is an EPIC LOVE STORY. It absolutely worth the heartbreak and the gutting feelings it evokes, because, ladies, the ending is SO GOOD.
The girls don’t call me the Epilogue Nazi for nothing, and I can tell you right now, without a shred of a doubt, that this epilogue is one of the best I’ve ever read. It’s simply beautiful and I know I’ve used that word a lot in my rant, but it really is the only word I find to describe my experience with this book. Beauty is not always pretty, but it makes you feel: it makes you feel pain, it makes you feel happiness, it makes you feel hope. And this book has the most hopeful message I’ve read in a long time.
Love never ends, it carries on to those who were touched by it, it comes back to us as the fruit of our loved ones’ actions. It will always be and it’s the only thing that will stay with us forever.
So if you’re not reading this book because it is about a dead guy, then I feel sorry for you, because you will pass on the chance of experiencing one of the best books about love I’ve ever read.

I’m in Awe!
This book was a two parter that totally blew me away! With a more in depth look at Grace’s life with Dig, we’re shown more sides to their relationship. The parts that weren’t as rosy as the memories she shared in the previous book. I got to know Dig on a much deeper level and that limitless love her had for her. It was so surreal to watch it transcend from the beyond is a series of events that could only be a result of a love so powerful it goes beyond time and space. It’s a soulful desire to fulfill life promises.
This book was deep and emotional and way more than I could have ever expected it to be. My heart ached for Grace’s pain and soared with her hope and bloomed with the happiness she finally found. That joy she has always deserved. This book was breathtakingly beautiful.
I literally cried through the first half of this book. This story contains the most unique love triangle I’ve ever read. Don’t worry there is no cheating. It’s soooo good.
I loved this book!!! You need to read Lock & Key first to really understand all the characters but this book gives us Dig’s point of view of how he and Grace met. I loved reading from his POV!! I read this book in one sitting and will probably read it again. It gave me the ‘feels’ for sure! I literally had tears rolling down my cheeks at reading the epilogue…so, so good!! On to the next book in the series!!
Holy moly, this book was one heck of an emotional roller coaster. It was gut wrenching, evocative, gruesome and heart wrenching. I would call this Dig and part two of Grace’s story. This book will take you on a ride of introspection and revelation for both Dig and Grace.
In the first book there were a few questions about Dig you just needed the answers to, and this book will give them to you. One of them will suck all the air from your lungs. I think it explains who he was very well, and gives his character even more depth.
The last part of this book is Grace’s continuing story after the phone call from Laura. She goes into a tailspin of blaming herself for the outcome of events. Her best friend Tania rolls into town and gives her a distraction, which turns into an unexpected meeting.
Overall, this is a book that will just leave you breathless, but will fill in any holes you had from the first book. Kudos to Cat Porter for writing a romance boom that has everything, but far from frilly.
I loved that that we got Dig’s side of the story at the beginning. This book had so much heart, some suspense, and of course a beautiful romance. I absolutely loved this story.
This book was really emotional for me. It’s starts off in Dig’s point of view and his story gives so many details of what happened to make him the man he was and who he wanted to be, his love for Grace and his ideas of what he wanted for his club before his tragic death. Dig was a great guy under his hard exterior. Dig will always stay in my mind. I can never forget his amazing story. I’ve read it multiple times and will continue to reread it over and over. Cat Porter really knows how to dig deep into your soul with her stories. She’s one of my most favorite writers and this series is one of my most favorite series. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend all of Cat’s books.
This book was an emotional roller coaster. Got to read more about Dig and everything he went through. He’s one sexy, caring and protective alpha biker. He would do anything for the ones he loved and anyone needing he’s help. Part 2- Grace and Miller deals with some heartbreak and some bumpy roads. But they come out stronger. I just love all these characters. On to the next book.
Random & Rare is part of the Lock & Key series, is Dig’s book and is written in two parts. The first part is in Dig’s POV, the second is in Grace’s. Dig’s narrative is in the past while Grace’s is in the present. Lot’s of questions are answered in both parts. This is an incredibly emotional book. I’ve read all of the books in the series and this one is the most emotional one to read. It brings Dig and Grace’s story full circle in the most beautiful way. This series is brilliantly written, engaging, heart wrenching and tragically beautiful at times. I loved reading Dig’s POV. I can not recommend this series enough, it’s an absolute must read.
