Four stand alone but related stories with common characters. Great characters and world building with lots of action and intrigue. You could be reading the news headlines…
The plotting is always tight, well thought out and exciting, the writing immaculate, the characters interesting, the dialogue realistic and there is no emphasis on perversion. I love these thrillers!
This is a great bookset. Its full of action. Kendra finds herself wondering what is going on, Ryan is her ex and. She fears hes in trouble. She learns that not evetything what she seems. And she is trained for the situation she gets involved with. And she is not sure how Ryan is mixed up with the situation on hand. The Author has done a fantastic job at making these books to where when you start reading the book, you delve right into it. I like these kind of reads because I like to put together mysteries. And this bookset is fantastic. A definite Must read.

This 4 book box set is a series of stories about the exploits of the operators assigned to “ section one”, a black ops covert unit. Based in New Zealand and operating all over Southeast Asia, the group fights against Muslim extremists. Deidre Raines in the boss of the unit. Raines is a second generation operator ( her mother is HER boss). Mr Ling develops his characters well, and is knowledgeable about weapons systems and military tactics. The plots for these tales seem familiar because you probably read a similar story in the newspaper yesterday. If you are a fan of spy thrillers, I think you will like these books.
Each of these books provides a great read, they are superb thrillers with great characters, both Maya and Kendra are excellent, complex and well drawn, and of course very capable. I also love the locations, New Zealand and Malaysia, both of which are very evocatively described.
However, when they are read together, in order, they are brilliant, the 4 novels together provide a complete story and this is definitely a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
I had previously read a couple of the books, but found that I enjoyed them even more when I read them in the context of this collection.
I received an advance copy of this book, but have voluntarily written this review based on my own opinions.
RAINES & SHAW. 4/1. John Ling.
FALLEN ANGEL
Kendra Shaw a failed terrorist’s mission and it broke her. Dismissed, and now relaxing in Auckland she thinks she sees Ryan , once a lover of hers, now he is being followed. Is he involved in this black op, or a mark placed on him. Two people she trusts to find out Braddock and Larsen agents. Espionage is great. I love the covers, the intrigue and the characters are well defined
THE BLASPHEMER.
The setting is New Zealand, with a Muslin author, that has written a counterversal book. Which made him a target by the extremists, having to get police protection for his family.
Maya, is one tough committed officer, trouble is that Khan the author refuses to be quiet, or hide. The plot goes on, dealing with racism, what will happen , makes for an interesting story.
REBELLION.
A fantastic cover that draws you in and doesn’t disappoint you with a story that captures you at once. Two strong women Khadijah, a woman of visions, and Maya. The game of cat and mouse. What is at stake ? The soul of the nation. Khadijah has spies everywhere. But Maya has something that is highly valued of Khadijah. She is willing to bargain for answers of her own personal quest, for answers. A great plot with twists and turns. Enjoyable for all. Awaiting the next book and the continuing role of these two women.
VENGEANCE
Maya hated walking into a trap, having a muslin head dress on, she continues. Now hearing a harsh Arabic language, anxiety is felt, could she get pass the check point, or detour around. Now a call telling her to go back they are testing her commitment. With heart pounding, as a reader, what does the author have in store for us. Bringing to mind, that others as she was, and the ground soldiers have gotten orders from someone above them. Testing them, and they were easily disposed if worse happened.
The covers are superb, giving us so many scenarios of what the story maybe about. The opening chapters have captured us once again.
The plot flows, you love the characters. Now they are in a box set, which is great, readers will enjoy each of them
Given Arc for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
