These are great cozy mysteries. The characters are wonderful. I love Raina and her grandmother Po Po. The story line keeps you on your toes. I can’t wait to read where their next adventure takes them.
Fun Easy read
Love quirky grandmothers !
The series is a fun introduction to a Chinese-American family and the generational differences that impact how they live their lives and deal with one another. The protagonist is a terrific character. She is smart, witty and adventuresome.
I enjoyed the humor of the stories. I also love the relationship between grandmother and granddaughter. The story line was easy to follow. I enjoyed learning about Chinese culture also. The mystery was not too dark but just enough to make you wonder “ who did it”
FUN READ.
I think Raina’s life reflects true life relationships and am hoping for the best turn out and probably expect it because this isn’t true life but I still enjoy a happily ever after end but don’t necessairly expect to get that with this story. I love her grandmother PoPo and her energy and outlook. Figuring out who dunit isn’t evident the suspect lists are long and thoughtful. Definitely a page turner wanting to know who the culprit is.
Fun read
Easy Read funny parts
I tore through the first set, then had to purchase the rest. Great characters, great story. What a wonderful way to pass time during our lockdown.
kind of crazy, intresting charters
Interesting look into Chinese culture
I enjoyed the quirky characters.
family-dynamics, female-sleuth, amateur-sleuth, bad-puns, california, chinese-customs
Raining Men and Corpses (Raina Sun Mystery #1)
The grad student with problems. A murder of a colleague. Reappearance of ex husband who is lead detective on the case. A best friend/reporter who just steamrolls over everyone. Family trouble over an inheritance. A sassy Chinese grandmother who appears unannounced on her doorstep and moves right on in–to EVERYTHING.
That’s the basics, but the mystery/suspense are well done, and there is fun and snarks throughout. I really enjoyed it!
Gusty Lovers and Cadavers (Raina Sun Mystery #2)
If you’re looking for gory stuff and erotica: look elsewhere. If you’re looking for a solid mystery with fun characters and lots of situational humor: grab your coffee, sit down, and enjoy! Raina gets put through the wringer by her family while she works to fix things for a tiny baby’s future. The mystery is foremost in the story, but since her best sleuthing partner is her Chinese grandmother, the rest just gets folded in. There are lots of suspects and people who turn out not to be what they seem. Well told, and the characters certainly are!
Breezy Friends and Bodies (Raina Sun Mystery #3)
This time Raina is in San Francisco for Chinese New Year when she gets mixed up in another murder investigation. Her PoPo is her sidekick once again, and all kinds of mischief as well as real danger ensue. The insights into Chinese cultural beliefs and practices are fascinating to those of us who have been raised in other ethnic backgrounds. As a cozy mystery, it is really great, with a strong story line and more twists than a mountain road! Each of the books in the series is a stand alone, but they make you want to read all of them!
Great series and the set is a bargain
I had really high hopes for this author and series as it’s by an Asian American writer with an Asian heroine, but I just never liked the character who came off as really needy and immature.
Too long and drawn out…..people introduced, but then “ walk out the bar”. Nothing said to intrigue or give a clue
Premise of grad student….Chinese heritage…was interesting….but didn’t go anywhere…
Was the author expecting to learn more only if we read through book 4? With me, it ain’t gonna happened.
boreing
I haven’t read it yet. I take my time and sometimes go to other books I have on my list.
Not characters I enjoyed. Nor the main plot or back story.
