When death came calling, the outcasts became the champions. The Deadheads. A ragtag band of disgraced soldiers, killers saved from the gallows, and recruits too inept to hold the shield wall. They are the dregs of the Legion of Heroes.Duvain and Endyn are no exception. A giant with a terrible secret and his weak, incapable brother, they are barely competent enough to march in a straight line and … competent enough to march in a straight line and hold formation.
But when a humdrum posting far from the battle line sets them directly in the path of an unstoppable barbarian horde, the Deadheads are all that stands between the enemy and total annihilation.
Can the good-for-nothing soldiers prove themselves capable enough to turn the tide of battle and save innocent civilians?

Wonderful! The story of how Endyn, Duvain, Captain Lingram, and the rest of the Deadheads, who became so important in the later Silent Champions books, ended up on the road pursued by thousands of Eirdkilrs. A well told story that really shows the authors understanding of why soldiers fight.
received this book as an ARC.
This a military fantasy that is told from a group of legionnaires called “The Deadheads “. These are the outcasts, the veteran soldiers that have been there done that. This is a kickass book! Following orders to march and protect allies that really can’t stand them and speak a language that only few know…they’ve been “blessed” by the presence of a Royal pain in ass know it all.
Little do they know they go up against an enemy of giant barbarians the number in the 1000’s and all they want is to kill everyone who is in their way.! This is the 5th book of the Silent Champions series written by Andy Peloquin. He takes the reader into the mindset, the environment of the world in which the characters live. He writes with passion, the battle scenes are intense, bloody and spot on. If you love military fantasy with unforgettable characters, intense battles and a view from the soliders themselves you’ll love this! Life, death and of course good versus evil. This book will make you swear, bring you to tears, root for the heroes and make you want to read more of his books!
Ragged Heroes gives background to the brothers Duvain and Endyn and the rest of the Deadheads met in the Silent Champions. The tale of the rejects of the Legion who become heroes under the command of a great leader who cares about his men and doing the right thing no matter the cost to him personally is powerful. The way the brothers grow into their roles as soldiers shows what people can do when given the right direction and encouragement.
Mr. Peloquin is one of two of my favorite military fantasy writers. He masterfully weaves unique characters full of self reflection, doubt, pain, sensitivities and villains equally as vile and despicable as his emotionally scarred heroes are sensitive. His world building is as diverse as our planet. This is a short story about two brothers, Endyn the giant of a man inflected with dragon skin and his younger brother Duvain the weaker one of the two, we first met them in book 4 in the Silent Champions, Courage to sacrifice. We get a glimpse into their background and the Deadhead unit of Onyx Company. With hardly any training they receive their marching orders to go to the front line. If you have not read the Silent Champions Series then you will not want to miss a word of it, and if you have read it and want more of the same excitement, action and characters then this great short story is an added bonus to have. And of course I couldn’t put it down until the end.
This stand-alone relative to the ” Silent Champions ”
series is equally as enthralling as the other stories.
I could ** not ** put it down !!
Make sure you’re comfortable when you start this
story because you’re in for the long haul.
Enjoy !!
