But how far would he go to protect himself?
Two cases. One deadly answer.
As the two cases collide, D.I. Paolo Sterling finds he has more questions than answers. And, when torture escalates to murder, he suddenly finds himself in a race against time to find the killer and put an end to the depravity – once and for all.
‘A dark, cleverly plotted tale . . . I was gripped from the opening scene and raced through the book to its final, shocking ending. Crime writing at its very best’ Sheila Bugler
‘Gritty, topical, sometimes lacerating, but always enthralling. A truly compulsive read’ Abbie Frost
Lorraine Mace brings us the fourth instalment in her dark, gritty and shocking series featuring DI Paolo Sterling – perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter, Tess Gerritsen and Mo Hayder.

A sadistic vigilante with a twisted sense of revenge is the focus of the 4th DI Sterling investigation. The case itself is interesting and more than a little graphic (be forewarned if that kind of thing bothers you). The investigation unfolds naturally, and the police work is accurate. I also liked the interplay between Sterling and his team. You don’t need to have read the first books to enjoy this one, but you will gain insight into the team if you do. Rage and retribution by Lorraine Mace.
Absolutely fantastic. Wow. Dark and gruesome. I had no idea who the killer was until the author wanted me to know. Loved Paolo and Dave. Shocking too. Jack I didn’t like. Loved CC and Andea. Looking forward to the next book. 5*.
Another dark and gritty thriller from Lorraine Mace, with an opening chapter from Nemesis which is dark and necessarily graphic, but not gratuitously so.
From there I joined DI Paolo Sterling at the opening ceremony of the renovated youth centre, a project Paolo played a major part in making happen. The ceremony goes awry when the plaque is revealed and it has been defaced with an accusation against the local councillor.
Paolo has to discover whether there is any truth to the accusation, as well as find out who is behind it. At the same time, Paolo is called in to investigate the brutal attack on a man who is now in hospital in a coma. Not only that, but Paolo has to deal with his complicated family life, and difficulties within his team of officers.
Rage and Retribution is another gripping character-driven thriller from a talented author. It’s a compelling read, full of tension and suspense, that deals with some difficult issues. Not for the faint-hearted!
Rage and Retribution is the fourth book in the series featuring DI Paolo Sterling, but as with the previous three, it can easily be read as a stand-alone.
5 Stars!
Book 4 in the DI Sterling Series is another tightly woven page-turner that leaves you ducking to avoid injury from all the rocket-fire plot twists! The blurb asked can two wrongs make a right, but there’s a lot more than two wrongs here, trust me!
Investigations into a plaque defacement with an accusatory message at the new youth center, and the unreported sexual assaults of men have no connection until a death occurs, and Sterling has to take a closer look at a secretive, upscale businessmen’s club.
Nothing is clear-cut in this read. No easy answers or fixes. The body count rises, names are dropped from everyone’s lips as aspersions are cast… but leads go nowhere.
Paolo’s frustrations are exacerbated by the three women in his life: daughter, Katy, girlfriend, Jessica, and ex-wife, Lydia. These relationships will weigh on his heart as he’s forced to make decisions that will change his life. (And no, I still do not like Lydia.)
But Paolo is a good guy who doesn’t like bad guys. He and his stellar team rise to the occasion despite the seeds of dissension being sown by a jealous DS in his department.
My emotions were all over the place—glad a serial killer was dealt with, sad for the victims at the very heart of the story, and mad at who’s still standing in the end… and who isn’t.
Rage and Retribution deals with possible triggering issues in graphic detail but I believe great writing delivers the suspenseful impact to hold the reader’s interest without the sting. Book 4 can be read as a standalone, but the history and building of the bond Paolo has with his team would be missed. Don’t do it.
This read is a mystery, a crime thriller, a character study, hardboiled, and a must-read.
Enjoy!
