Rule 1: The client’s always right. Rule 2: When the client’s wrong, see Rule 1. When the client wants someone killed? There’s no rule for that. In the middle of a burger-store holdup, the only thing standing between ten-year-old Vivian Mollison and certain death is a police officer named Rafferty. She lives. He gets fired. For the fifteen years since Rafferty’s hustled the streets of Dallas as a … Rafferty.
She lives.
He gets fired.
For the fifteen years since Rafferty’s hustled the streets of Dallas as a private investigator. Sometimes it’s good work.
Most times, not so much.
So, when he gets a call from Vivian’s now-wealthy parents, Rafferty’s thinking dollar signs.
But will he do what it takes for a long-awaited payday?

Praise for Rafferty: P.I.
“If you like Parker’s Spenser, or Robert Crais’ Elvis Cole you should love the Rafferty series.” – Mark A. Johnson.
“Rafferty is the best hardboiled PI of this era.” – Wendy Green.
“Any fan of Micky Spillane, the Jack Reacher novels, or Mark Yost’s Rick Crane novels should absolutely venture into the world of Rafferty P.I.” – Michael Raabe.
“Duncan truly captured the pure essence of the definitive smart-ass private eye in his character Rafferty. Take part Sam Spade with a little Mike Hammer, mix in some Spenser and you have an awesome character.” – Cliff Fausset.
“This author goes on my list of great private eye writers along with Kinky Friedman, Elmore Leonard, and Lawrence Sanders.” – Tricia Schiro.

Love Rafferty’s character, Cowboy and Mimi.
On my fourth book!!
Well written. I liked it so much I read the rest of the series.
Basically, escapist literature with bad guys without redeeming features and a hero for whom almost everything seems to work out.
Great read
I am a fan of Rafferty and want every one
OK. Plot line a bit weak. Macho hero protagonist. Let’s see what the next volume brings.
Rafferty is quite the maverick!
A current day Spencer For Hire combined with Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Engaging characters. My only suggestion is if he knows someone is gunning for him he should probably sleep with his clothes on.
Fast paced and witty dialogue. Interesting plots.
Good ideas. Witty remarks. Kept me interested.
Dated. Slow. I didn’t enjoy itg.
This book does not bring a conclusion. I have to buy the next book to get resolution to the characters. I felt I wasted my time reading it.
Rafferty, a private investigator, is hired to find five motorcycle creeps who had held a young woman named Vivian as a hostage for ten months. Vivian is alive but catatonic, and her parents hired Rafferty thinking that the bikers’ arrests would give Vivian closure and help her heal. Other characters include Rafferty’s girlfriend Hilda and a man named Cowboy who helps Rafferty find the bikers. Despite the serious subject, the tone of the book is fairly lighthearted given Rafferty’s sense of humor, ability to make up idiotic rules for every occasion, and his honorable heart.
What a terrific book and lead character. We are so lucky to have this series rescued from the edge of oblivion. Even better, to have new stories being written. Can’t recommend this enough. Rafferty rules.
Most comments note Rafferty invokes Spencer, but this reader immediately goes to Nelson DeMille’s smart-mouthed NYPD dectective John Corey. Rafferty is great, the dialogue is witty and carries the action at a good pace. Looking forward to more Rafferty, which I understand is being written by the late author’s son and a co-writer.
SUPERB!!!! if you love the classic hard-boiled detective you will go insane for rafferty and his cohorts. the characters are spectacular. the plot dynamic. rafferty himself is fabulous. absolutely fantastic through and through.
great book, saved to my read again list
Review of Rafferty’s Rules by W. Glenn Duncan
About fifteen years after Rafferty had shot a junkie who was robbing a restaurant while holding a ten year old girl hostage. Now fifteen years later the P.I. is at the house of the family of that girl. He finds out they want him to find the motorcycle gang who had used her and then sold her to another M/C gang and kill them. They tell him that her mind had never been right since that time, and that they want him to find them and kill them. He tells then he’s not in the vengeance business but they come to terms and Rafferty starts off on a dangerous bloody trail. The story is fast and violent and a real page turner. I’d give it five stars.

Great read
Intelligent humor, memorable characters, scary situations that left me laughing out loud- this is an adventure! Duncan’s sharp wit explodes in the thoughts and remarks of Rafferty and his oddball friends & allies. I’m hooked on this series!
