I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Lucien was having a dream and, with a woman in it, he knew it would be trouble. He slipped through the gates into a field of barley where an apparition, a woman, appeared. The oracle kissed him this time and images were pushed into his brain. Then she pushed him away and told him to run from the shadow hounds he could hear coming toward him. Just as he slipped through the gates, his phone rang.
Callista Syches, had just moved to a new city at seventeen to start her senior year in a new school in New York. Her father was dying of an incurable condition. She had no idea what she would do when he was gone. She ran to the elevator, not wanting to be late for school, and saw a handsome guy waiting in front of it. He introduced himself as Archer Ambrose and asked if she had just moved in. She was very perceptive and sometimes knew what people were thinking. She had thought Archer would be foreign, but he had no accent. A bubbly blonde called to him – it figures he had a girlfriend – and he turned to point out his sister.
Archer woke to the smell of his favorite foods. He knew his mother wanted a favor, which was the only time she would cook for anyone. She wanted him to make Todd fall for someone else, so he agreed and used his power to mentally shoot an arrow into Todd’s heart so he would fall for Mary Beth. Then he did the same for Mary Beth. He ran to the elevator after having to go back for his gym clothes while his sister/mother went ahead to have the Rolls Royce come to pick them up for school. A gorgeous girl walked up and he hoped she was immortal as he was… but she wasn’t. Being immortal, his family members stopped aging at 18 and remained that way forever.
Callie walked into Chemistry on her first day and was relieved to see Archer. She sat next to him, then a dark-haired gorgeous guy arrived and he introduced Lucien Veras to her. Lucien was Archer’s best friend, but actually he was his father’s half-brother and was probably one of the most gifted of the immortals: he could control the sun, heal mortals, and tell prophecies, he’d invented music, poetry, and medicine, and he was the god of truth. The three of them went to lunch together and sat at the table where Archer’s twin sister/mother, Aroha, was. Callie looked at her and she seemed older somehow, like middle-aged! And Callie knew Aroha was rejecting her. Lucien notices Archer’s attraction to Callie and warns him to be careful. But he already seems to be falling in love and if his family realizes it, he may need to protect his love from the storm the gods will surely unleash upon them!
I enjoyed this loosely based story of Psyche and Cupid where the gods live among the mortals and never age past 18. Grab your copy and see where the story of Callie and Archer will lead. Is there danger ahead? Or are there unknown elements that will change the course of their future?
