Okay, I’ll admit it took me a while to pick up this one (despite the myriad recommendations floating around all the reader hang-outs), because the blood on the cover scared me off. XD And yeah, there’s blood in the story because they are vampires, but I quickly got over it because 1) Burkhart crafted an amazing tale, and 2) it was written in a way that didn’t completely squick me out.
Also, 3) the world-building here is epic. The rules were intriguing, I was entertained, and I have to know what happens next! It’s easy to see why this series comes so highly recommended!
HOLY hell. Shara is the MC of all fucking MC. I love this series and devoured all of the books as they came out. Who knew blood and sex mixed so well? GAWD.
What crazy wonderful world have I fallen into? We meet Shara as she flees for her life in a monthly basis as she is hunted by monsters. Just when she thinks they have caught her help in the form of two sexy male vampires arrives. Once they fill in her background, powers, and who they are things start moving quick as they attempt to set up her court before danger takes out them all. This book really sucked me in as the story got moving and each new detail really blew my mind with the incredible world building. If you like steamy fascinating vampire novels then you should really try this book. I loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
I cannot wait for the next book in this series. I was hooked right from the start. I really like the author’s take on vampires.
An interesting take on the vampire myth. With this fresh approach, there was a lot of information and peculiarities specific to this author’s vampires, to take in. As such, the first book in the series seemed a bit fast-paced. The tempo didn’t allow for as much character development as I would have liked to see. The attraction turned love between Shara and her “Blood,” Alrik and Daire, was virtually instantaneous. While I don’t take issue with instalove per se, I’ve not found it before in a series this long and would have expected more information up front to build upon.
That said, the smex was hot, the story interesting, and the characters are all likeable so far. Shara is humble and kind, yet fierce in the face of the monsters who mean her harm. Ready to give their life for Shara if need be and serve her in ALL ways always, Alrik and Daire are solid, protective, and loyal. There is still quite a bit of history to be unraveled not to mention how Shara will reign in her tenure as queen. I’m interested to meet those who join the Queen’s service, to learn about her lineage, and find out more about the triune and competing queens.
If u are into Vampire romance as well as reverse harems this definitely a book to read. Full of mystery and sexy times can’t wait to read the second book in the series
Masterpiece!!! There isn’t a review I can give or words that can begin to truly explain how much I love this book and how it gives me all the things I crave in a paranormal romance. The world is amazing and her writing is like poetry; ethereal and deep…so deep. Lusty & fully charged. The MCs are captivating, powerful, loyal, and fulfilling. The heroine is strong and growing more and more into what she truly is meant to be. I am currently reading the second book and am already more than halfway finished. THERE IS NOTHING I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK. I felt like I was right there in every scene. I felt like I could feel everything the characters felt. My mind and body was immersed in this book and I would love to give a shout out to the author for her writing style. It is hard for me to find an author with a writing style that I can truly resonate with with no inhibitors. A treasure for people who love PNR & real steam (smoky steamy steam lol), especially those who love vampires like me. Oh and lets not forget the Blood…lots and lots of Blood!
A bloody read!
A lost virgin vampire queen…
Two vampire knights sworn to protect her…
It’s about to get very hot… and bloody…
This was unlike anything I have read before – so very unique and different. I enjoyed this novel so much. So intense and sensual and hot. So very hot.
Full of thralls, Blood, vampires, truths, secrets, powers and love.
Perfect for readers of paranormal romances.

She casts a circle of salt around herself on the path, pulls out her chunk of wood with iron nails in it & her small pocket knife She’s going to have to fight to try & survive!!
She’s being overwhelmed by their numbers & their boss calls out that he’s going to have her, finally! She knows she’d rather did than let him get his murdering hands on her so she’s about to turn her knife on herself & cut her own throat, when two men scream at her to stop & start killing the monsters until it’s just the 3 of them! Once she realises they’re not a threat, they go to her room & explain that she’s actually a missing Queen & that they & she are in fact vampires!! Fun & Hot
An intriguing start to a RH series. With lots of smouldering scenes as well as a creative plot, this was a great read. I’m keen to see how her harem grows.
This was my first RH with MM & MFM so it was a bit different. But Joely does an amazing job with what is going on with this book. Besides the hot scenes we get a great start at an amazing series with the MC Shara. She’s been on the run from the thralls that murdered her mother five years ago. At the age of 22, she is alone and never at one place for too long. Shara is finally cornered and is ready to end it when two men come to her rescue. We get to meet Alrik and Daire from this and they claim to be her Blood and sworn to protect her as their queen. This is so different for Shara because she’s always on the run.
This book yanks you in and will not let you go. I cannot wait to get started on the next book in the series. There is suspense, romance and an overwhelming feeling of wanting to live in that world. This is the type of book that people wish they can give more stars too.
Loved this book! I have a new author to add to my favorites list! Graphic, bloody and wonderful. Waiting with great anticipation for book 4. Yes, it’s bloody, but it is (mostly) willing bloodletting, and not as dark as you would think. Added this series to my “winners” category.
Phenomenal PNR RH! I can’t believe it took me this long to get to it frankly!
Fabulous story, characters, world building, and a great start to the harem! Really looking forward to continuing this series.
Warning: lots of blood, slightly uncomfortable …more
Phenomenal PNR RH! I can’t believe it took me this long to get to it frankly!
Fabulous story, characters, world building, and a great start to the harem! Really looking forward to continuing this series.
Warning: lots of blood, slightly uncomfortable kink involving blood.
Enjoyed my first taste of MM!
Audiobook version:
I LOVE this series! It is an awesome Vampire Reverse Harem series with plenty of steam, plenty of suspense and plenty or intrigue. The characters and exploring their powers has been a wild ride. New characters are always being added and the story is constantly evolving. The writing is wonderful and have been me sucked in from the very start.
Narration is FAN-TA-STIC! Cassandra makes an amazing vampire queen! She has such a unique voice that is perfect and so enjoyable to listen to. Tristan is amazing as well. They make an amazing duo and have enhanced an already amazing story and added a whole new depth to enjoy.
Great great read for any PNR lover~

Queen Takes Knights
Their Vampire Queen series, Book 1
By: Joely Sue Burkhart
Narrated by: Tristan James, Cassandra Myles
This is a well written, well told story that grabs your attention right from the start to the very end. Joely Sue Burkhart created a fascinating world with imaginative characters and storylines that are interesting and original. Great character development and buildup, as Shara Isador comes in to her own. Love the chemistry between her and her protectors, Alrik and Daire, it is going to get even more hotter when more of her protectors join in.
I listened to the audiobook version, the narrators Tristan James and Cassandra Myles are awesome voice performers and storytellers. They brought the characters to life, added the right amount of dramatic flair to enhance your listening pleasure.
Queen Takes Knights is the first story in the Their Vampire Queen Series. It’s the story of Shara Isador, who has spent her life scared of the monsters in the night, with good reason. The first book starts with how she meets the first of her Blood, her chosen knights who would die to do anything for her. It gets straight in there with the action. Shara has had a hard life, to say the least, but she’s refused to let it break her, and, if anything, is stronger from it. Rik and Daire haven’t had things much easier, and they make up for lost time in caring for her. Shara takes the news of who she is and the world she’s from surprisingly well, but given the monsters she’s had to face, it’s understandable. This is a fairly fast paced story, and it is a little background heavy, as Shara is discovering who she is and just exactly how much power she’ll have. It doesn’t lag at any point, and it is sinfully hot. My only complaint is that it is a little on the short side for me at 190 pages. It was just over too soon – I was so enthralled with the story, I didn’t realise how quickly it was going to end. I love this book, and I’m so glad I bought it.
Normally, I would keep my review strictly to the book. However, this is a five book series. You may be wondering if it’s worth it (cost and time-wise), so I wanted to comment on the whole series, given the hindsight of having completed it now. The character development throughout this series is huge, and yet at no point has it ever felt rushed or unbelievable or forced. These characters have grown so exquisitely throughout this series that you honestly want to know them, however brutal their world may be. This series has never lost pace; it’s never dragged. It has never been anything but thoroughly captivating, with phenomenal world building. It may not be the world building you see in high fantasy, but it takes skill to seamlessly interweave an millennia-old underbelly to society while pulling in myth and legend and have it seem plausible and fluid. I came across this series later than many, but it is honestly one of my favourite series in this genre, and Shara one of my favourite heroines. It is fantastic, and you will not regret reading this series.
Pleasantly surprised by this series and audiobook!
I had heard a lot of good things about this series and thought I would try it out on audio since I have had more time getting through books that way with all my traveling for work. I was super happy I did! I loved this series, its very addicting and I couldn’t wait to get back in my car and wasn’t too upset to be stuck in extra holiday traffic so I could listen more to Shara and her Blood.
I loved the storyline, from seeing Shara grow and develop feelings for her men and also seeing her start the journey into being a vampire Queen. I liked that she was reluctant with stuff that RiK and Daire suggested, which is how anyone who was raised in the human world would react. Loved that her blood opens them up to their powers and that they can shift into different things. I loved the steam and looooove that Rik and Daire have a relationship (my guilty pleasure is definitely M/M anything haha). I started on Book 2 on audio already, I also bought Book 3 because I knew I would be in this for the long haul haha.
In terms of the narration, I thought both Tristan and Cassandra did a good job. They weren’t my favorite narrators, I think sometimes it was tough to tell the difference between Rik and Daire, and sometimes Cassandra’s tone didn’t match the sentiment of the phrase, but overall I would definitely listen to them again. I already have listened to some of Book 2 and they definitely improve in that one (so many new voices to hear them do!).
Overall, great series on audio, will be definitely be listening to the rest while on vacation. I will say they are DEFINITELY not suitable to listen to at work hahaha. My face kept getting red with the steamy scenes (since they do increase in volume in Book 2) and it was too much to try and explain it to my coworkers without giving away what made my face red haha.
Thrilling and different type of vampire story. I could not put it down and look forward to the next book. Well made characters, unique, some action and romance. Sorry but I truly try and never leave spoilers.
I had seen the advertisements everywhere for this book, so I gave in! And oh my word, I was not disappointed! The steamy scenes will definitely get your blood pumping! The story line was really good and very well written. I will definitely be reading the rest of the books in the series!!
