From USA Today Bestselling Author Devney Perry comes a small town, friends-to-lovers romance.Katherine Gates has been in love with Cash Greer since the moment he saved her life from a runaway goat. According to Cash, she’s the little sister he never had, the greatest roommate in the world and his favorite coworker. They’re friends—best friends. In the dark days of her youth, it was her friendships … her youth, it was her friendships that kept her alive and made life in a junkyard worth living. So she’s learned to shove her feelings for Cash down deep, even if that means ignoring eyes that shine brighter than the Montana summer sun and the smile that illuminates the snowiest winter day.
Except with every passing year, the denial takes its toll on her wounded heart until one day Katherine decides to take an impulsive road trip to the Oregon coast. Alone. That is, until Cash cons his way into the passenger seat.
The farther they travel, the harder it is to pretend. And when she confesses her feelings, she learns that Cash has some secrets of his own. Secrets that will either bond them together.
Or rip them apart.

Quarter Miles, the third book in the Runaway series is a wonderful friends to lovers road trip romance that will give you all the feels and melt your heart. I came for the longing and sexual tension and Devney Perry absolutely delivered.
I’ve been looking forward to reading Katherine and Cash’s story from the very second I finished Wild Highway. We learned in book 2 that Katherine has strong feelings for her best friend, Cash Greer. However, he treats her like a sister. To get over her unrequited feelings she decides to continue the journey of returning the car and reuniting with another member of the junkyard group. Unfortunately for Katherine, there was no way Cash was letting her go on her own.
The close proximity, the easy friendship and all the secrets and unspoken feelings made for one delicious story. I love Cash and Katherine together. They share a natural chemistry. It’s so obvious how much they care for one another.
I will say. As much as I enjoyed this story, the lack of communication between Cash and Katherine frustrated the heck out of me. For being best friends and as close as they were, there was a lot of things they didn’t know about each other. I mean, of course I understand Katherine’s desire to move forward from her painful past. However, so many of their issues could have been resolved if they just talked to each other.
All in all, Quarter Miles is a good, emotional read that I wholeheartedly recommend everyone pick up. The gorgeous flow of Devney Perry’s words made it so easy to lose yourself for a few hours. The Runaway series as a whole has been enjoyable. I can’t wait to read more from these characters.
Quarter Miles is book 3 of the Runaway Series. I love the idea that the characters are basically handing off the car in each book. In this book Katherine decides to take a road trip from Montana to the Oregon coast to find Aria, whom Katherine hasn’t seen since she left California at 18 years old. This trip is a way to escape her best friend and roommate, Cash, whom she has been in love with forever! Cash has other plans though, once learning about the trip he refuses to let her go alone. This friends to lovers story is filled with some drama and secrets that could have everything falling apart. Devney once again tells a great story and I again find myself waiting impatiently for the next book.
Holy moly! This. Book. Blew. Me. Away. Why? One, I’m a sucker for small town romances. Two, it gets better and better as the series progresses. In Quarter Miles, we meet Katherine—a woman with humble beginnings (one might even say harsh). Still she beat the odds and makes awe-inspiring strides. Here’s what I love: the “self-made” “rags-to-riches” theme carried throughout the series. Perry, penned the most beautifully broken, spunky, fierce women I’ve read in a while. And Kat is no exception in that regard. Kat’s a bad*ss boss in every sense of the word. Then there’s Cash, Katherine’s “smoking hot” friend she’s had a crush on for years. Cash is an easy going, laid back kind of guy. However, Cash is not very self-expressive. With Kat being so closed off and Cash, so inarticulate— will these two ever get the ball rolling? Will Kat finally tell Cash how she feels? Find out yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
Cash and Kat’s story is book 3 in the Runaway series and what a fantastic addition!
This series really keeps getting better and better!!
We met these characters in Runaway Road and while you could read this book as a standalone, each book offers a missing link about the overall circumstances affecting these friends.
That said Kat and Cash are best friends, co-workers and roommates stuck in the friend zone. A Friday night family dinner gives Kat insight that forced her to accept her friend’s Gemma’s offer to drive the now famous Classic 1964 Cadillac to Oregon. Little did she anticipate that Cash was joining her. As their road trip unfolded so did their hidden pasts, and secrets.
Their story flowed fantastically as they made their way to Oregon with a few detours thanks to a quarter.
Yep!
Read and find out!
These characters were soo lovable, relatable and well developed!! There were a couple of times their antics were so maddening, I got so frustrated with them I wanted to throw my kindle! That was also a reason why I loved them. Their vulnerability and their fear of hurting the other took slow burn to a whole new level. The banter was snarky and hilarious and their chemistry was combustible.
Omg, this author is known for always inserting a twist that gives her stories a little umph. Well…in this installment, the secret that unfolded was a knockout POW!!
What happens… you have to read and find out for yourself.
I cannot wait for the next installment and see what happens next!
With this series, Perry gifted us with loyal heroes, kick*ss heroines, and a lot of feelings. The stories are shorter, but the romance is the best!
Cash is as dreamy as his brother Easton (and just as clueless about his feelings). I loved how he was protective and dedicated to Kat.
This might be my favorite Devney Perry novel to date. I was at the edge of my seat and read it in one go.
If you want a quick read with a hot cowboy, a best-friends-to-lovers romance, this book is for you. I guarantee you’ll have a big smile throughout your read.
I am more entranced with each book in the Runaway series by Devney Perry. More in love, more invested, more everything. I have been waiting for QUARTER MILES, Katherine’s and Cash’s book, since I reached the very last page of WILD HIGHWAY, because the promise of another great read was guaranteed, and I was not disappointed.
Unrequited love, forbidden love, friends to lovers, there’s all of this and more in QUARTER MILES. Katherine and Cash are a ticking time bomb, you know the type, just waiting for the right spark to ignite. The kind of unresolved tension that you can literally cut with a knife? Yeah, plenty of that here. Their road to happy is long and twisty, but when they get there, SO worth every bump.
Devney has cemented her place as a queen of contemporary romance, where small towns and family play a major role, and I cannot get enough. Her books consistently rank among my favorites, and are ones that I happily recommend as must-reads. I’m already dying for Aria’s story, FORSAKEN TRAIL, which can’t show up on my e-reader quickly enough. In the meantime, 5 stars for Katherine, Cash, and their heads and tails journey to love.
Overall Grade:
When Devney Perry’s second book, Wild Highway, of the Runaway series ended, I was left wanting. Here’s the thing about a Devney Perry book. She wraps up her books with a glorious happy ending for her hero and heroine. She does this so well that I like to think of her as the queen of the epilogue. For example, Letters to Molly’s ending is still my favorite epilogue EVER. With that, when Wild Highway ended, I needed her newest book, Quarter Miles, immediately. Alas, that wasn’t to be, so I waited patiently for an ARC (or the release day) for Katherine and Cash’s story. For some reason, I was drawn to Katherine’s story. I think it has something to do with the idea that we just want to be chosen. Whether it’s teams for kickball on the playground or an audition or a romantic interest, we want to be seen and understood and chosen. At the end of Wild Highway, it looked as though Cash, Katherine’s long term crush, had chosen someone else, and my heart felt heavy for her. As such, the promise of Quarter Miles’s story tugged at my soul as I waited patiently for it. When it finally arrived, I couldn’t get to it fast enough. And in true Devney Perry fashion, her story melted my heart.
Devney Perry is my top recommended author to new readers for two very important reasons: (1) her story shines before her steam (this means people such as my older mom can read her and I don’t blush too much) and (2) her storytelling is such that you want to reside in her books. It doesn’t matter which series Perry writes I want to live in her books because her characters feel believable with the added fiction of romance. That feels both relational and titillating. And every reader whom I have recommended Perry has fallen deeply in love with her storytelling. That’s a testament to Perry’s craftsmanship.
Quarter Miles is no different than any of her other books in terms of Perry’s skill at developing characters who we feel a connection. From the beginning of Quarter Miles, Perry makes Katherine’s disappointment in life palpable. You want her to take this journey, the third leg of delivering the Cadillac. You need her to remove herself from her situation for a time, so that she can either move on or Cash realizes he actually sees her as more than a sister. When he invites himself on the journey, you feel discouragement because you want Katherine to have that space to examine and reflect on her life. You empathize with Katherine because Perry creates her to feel like your friend. This may sound simplistic, but it’s the best reason I can conjure for why Perry’s books are always one-click preorders for me. Her characters’ experiences feel like my experiences. As Katherine’s journey progresses, and she and Cash complicate their friendship, her pain and confusion feel important. Perry’s magic at crafting real characters allows you to imagine her struggles, and they become your own in a way. For me, that is the power of writing, and that power is illustrated time and time again in Perry’s books.
Now, Cash is one of my favorite types of heroes. He is well-meaning. He is kind and thoughtful, but he is blind. Quite frankly, be prepared because he wears blinders for much of the story. However, from a reader’s standpoint, we see him drawn to Katherine, protective of her. Perry holds him back, though, from recognizing his true feelings, so that tension necessary for creating compelling stories is present in the story. In many ways, it’s delicious because it keeps you engaged in the book, but it also creates the angst that makes your stomach nervous and brings tears to your eyes. Through Cash and Katherine’s journey, your feelings run the gamut, one minute you feel happy for their potential coupling, and the next, you note Katherine’s despair. As I’ve noted before in other reviews of books, for me, invoking the feelings of your readers is a testament to a writer’s skill, and Perry’s skill is keen.
Just like she did at the end of Wild Highway, Quarter Miles leaves us pining for more. This group of runaways with wounds so deep from their past find healing, and you long for their journeys because they remind us that we can find our own healing in our relationships with others. As we move into the next book, Forsaken Trail, Aria’s story, we can trust that Devney Perry will lead us through the minefield of emotions to an ending that feels like a promise for all of us.
Flip a coin…heads or tails…left or right? I loved this book!! Kat and Cash’s story showed true depth and emotion of two long time friends. Each story through this series keeps getting better and better. I can’t wait to see where the next stop on this road trip takes us.

I’ve been dying to dive into Quarter Miles after finishing Wild Highway and this friends-to-lovers romance was everything I wanted and more!
Katherine and Cash are so perfect for each other and I loved every moment of their journey in the Cadillac to a happily ever after. They have been friends for 12 years and they have both had feelings grow for each other but have been to scared to say anything for fear they’d ruin their wonderful friendship.
I’m a sucker for friends-to-lovers, and this one had me all up in my feels! There were a few twists and turns, and secrets revealed, that kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could.
This series is so much fun and I have enjoyed every book so far and I’m not ever going to want to say goodbye to these runaways. I loved getting to know Aria and I can’t wait to see what happens in her story, Forsaken Trail.
Grateful to have received a complimentary ARC copy to honestly review.
I love the way Devney Perry has built this series. How each standalone grabs you and makes you root for its characters in its own unique way. And if ever there was a perfect summer read then Quarter Miles is it. Classic car. Best friends. Road trip! And let me tell you, I was hanging on every coin flip.
I absolutely adored Kat. She was intelligent and brave. She had overcome so much in her life. Found a family and a home. And also fell in love with a man who couldn’t see her as the incredible woman she was. Or so she thought. Oh Cash. He was a great guy. Hardworking but laid back. And doing his best not to give into the temptation that was his best friend.
There was so much back and forth between Kat and Cash that I truly had no clue how it was going to pan out. The internal battle of confessing their feelings or holding it close to the chest. The assumption that the other didn’t feel the same. Emotions were high and everything was hanging in the balance. The yearning was palpable and I was holding my breath to see if these two, who knew each other so well, would get out of their own way.
Quarter Miles is the kind of book I love to get swept away by. Realistic, relatable characters. Fabulous friendships. Great destinations. Cash and Kat’s friends-to-lovers romance blew me away. It was sweet and angsty. Sexy and dramatic. And that ending- be still my racing heart. It summed up Kat and Cash’s wild ride perfectly.
PS- And I have to say this, and I know it is going to make the review a little long, but oh well. There is one scene where Devney Perry captured the magic and the wonder and awe of seeing Kat seeing the ocean for the first time that legit brought tears to my eyes. It reminded me of the first time I went to the beach. How I just stared and got lost in the majesty and power of it all. And anytime a book can get that kind of visceral reaction out of me- I’m all in.
5 Stars
Quarter Miles by Devney Perry is the most phenomenal friends to lovers story I have read this year!! It is the third book in the Runaway Series and can be read as a stand-alone. (I do recommend reading the others in the series as well.) This story was an emotional one that had gripped my heart from the very beginning.
Both Katherine and Cash were two amazing characters. Katherine has been through so much and hides behind her pain-Never wanting anyone to see the dirty beneath. She has been in love with her best friend Cash for years. But she fears he doesn’t see her in that way. Little did she know that Cash has a secret of his own…
Quarter Miles takes you on an incredible journey that you never want to end. Katherine and Cash have this undeniable chemistry that flies off the pages making you feel it all. Ms. Perry has such a way with words that you feel a part of the story. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!!!
Ahh!! The Runaway series from Devney Perry just keeps getting better and better with every trip the Cadillac takes, as Quarter Miles was absolutely fabulous!! It’s such a wonderful friends to lovers romance between Cash and Katherine that I devoured in one sitting. It gave me all the feels, watching these two cross that line into something more. There’s a little bit of angst and drama between these two, along with an intense connection that they couldn’t ignore now that they were away from the ranch and his family. I really loved these two and this entire story, and I smiled and swooned through the whole book. You definitely need to get this one and the rest of the series on your TBR! You will not be disappointed!!
In Quarter Miles it’s Katherine’s turn at the wheel as she sets out on a journey of self-discovery. Yes, she’s successful in her business life but aside from running away as a teenager she’s spent her entire life playing it safe and not doing anything she feels might upset her ‘adopted’ family to the extent of hiding her feelings for Cash, the youngest Greer son. It’s only when it looks like he might be falling in love with someone else that she sees how stagnant and empty her life is. Maybe a road trip in a 1964 Cadillac Deville convertible will help open her eyes and see what opportunities there are in the big, beautiful world out there or will an unexpected hitch-hiker make her see that home is best.
I absolutely love the Runaway series. I can’t remember ever being so eager for a book to release unless it was from a series involving a juicy cliff hanger. With Quarter Miles we get a wonderful friends to lovers romance between two slightly dim characters but it also has a vibe of unrequited love on both sides. I admit Katherine wasn’t my favourite character. She comes across as being a bit pious but as more and more of her back story unfolds I felt a little more understanding towards her. She played it safe to protect herself and not to draw any attention her way. Cash generally played it safe to keep the peace in his family. He’s grown up always knowing his brother would be the boss and accepted this. The chemistry between them is electric so how they’ve managed to be house mates for years without acting on it is testimony to the depth of the friendship between them and I loved watching that friendship evolve into the love that was always there as they travelled across the states letting the toss of a coin choose their route.
I have to start out with how much I LOVE this series. Every time I think I have a new favorite book the next one comes out and I fall hard again.
Needless to say I fell hard for Katherine and Cash. Their friends to lovers story is the perfect addition to this amazing group of people. I can’t wait for what’s to come!
This series is about five people who are former teenage runaways who were friends living in the same junkyard. Now that they are adults they are on a quest to deliver a vintage Cadillac to California. Along the way each one of the junkyard crew takes a leg on the journey and finds out something about themselves and their HEA.
I was super excited for this one because after reading the last book I loved Cash and Kat. Kat being the sweet, hard worker “sisterly type” to the Greer family that was introduced in the last book, her heart has always been towards Cash but he’s always treated her has the bff and nothing more. I so wanted these two to find their HEA.
Quarter Miles follows Kat on her adventure aka much needed vacation to take her friend Cadillac to its next destination, one day it will get to California and to the groups friend Karson. Kat’s heart is broken, she needs space between her and her bff Cash who doesnt know shes in love with him. She decided to visit her friend Aria, whom she hopes with the the car to its next location. But her plans change when Cash decides he wont let her go alone and tags along. Thus making her heart and vacation go up in flames.
I loved this story because it really brought more light to how all these friends who grew up in a junk yard. Kat had a horrible upbringing like the rest but in the end she found a family she loved, a family that took her in and one she found happiness. I really wanted her to open up to Cash, for him to see that deep down she loved him. This is definitely a story of the guy being absolutely blind while everyone else knew that Kat was in love with him. I wanted to shake Cash half the book. Like really guy? This girl totally loves yo, you have the perfect girl and have had her for forever.
There are a lot of bumps in the road for these two. Lots of angst, tension and the possibility of them losing their friendship that was always so strong. I was gripping my kindle with each page, hoping these two could pull through.
Aria is the next friend to go on the adventure with the car, she is going to visit her sister and deal with her sisters much hated boss. I can just feel the tension already!! I’m super excited about her adventure and she’s just as lovely has the rest of the ladies that have been introduced, super sweet and passionate about what she loves. Overall this was my favorite book in the series, I loved the first two but this one was the icing on the cake so far.
So this book is a little different than the previous two books because here the characters are actually on a road trip, together!! I loved Katherine and Cash! They are so perfect together. They have a bond and their friendship spans many years. But, throughout those years those friendly feelings shifted and while they have been in each other’s lives for quite sometime their is still secrets between them that might not go o se so well once revealed. I felt bad for her but loved how despite how her life was she forged on to find herself a family!
Devney Perry’s Runaway Road series is like the gift that keeps on giving. These books aren’t as long as her others, but fewer pages doesn’t mean less of an enjoyable read. I love how each of the books tells its own story and is able to provide a happily-ever-after for every single one of the couples so far while also remaining connected by way of the red Cadillac that’s being driven from one state to another and passed on from one person to the next in a once close-knit group of teens who lived in a junkyard in California. Katherine and Cash’s story is a friends-to-lovers romance, and it has a delicious amount of angst nicely counterbalanced by humor. There’s an ease in the banter and connection shared by these two main characters that belies the complexity of Cash’s relationship within his family and Katherine doubts as to belonging with the Greers as well as thinking Cash could never return her not-so-platonic feelings for him. Quarter Miles gave me all the feels, and it sets things up rather nicely for the next book in this wonderfully conceived book series. Five stars.
Heads Left. Tails Right.
From Montana to Oregon, Quarter Miles takes best friends, Katherine Gates and Cash Greer on a emotional, tension filled and life changing adventure. Feelings ignite, secrets are revealed, and one friendship changes forever.
The bond between Katherine and Cash was so beautiful to read. It pulls at your heart strings, gives you butterflies and has you clutching your kindle, hoping these two can find their way to a happily ever after. The tension, the friendship, the pain and all the swoon-worthy romance will have you speeding your way through Quarter Miles wanting every bit of Cash and Katherine you can get!
Devney Perry brings another unique and refreshing chapter to this captivating and romantic interlaced series. Finding love, finding adventure and finding yourself. I know each time I pick up a Devney Perry book i’m going to be hooked. And as soon as i’m finished, I want to read another one!
·I was provided a ARC by the author·

It’s official, I’m in love with ALL characters in this series.
As I said in my review of the previous book, this series in perfect for this quarantine, to escape to in a world of friends, love and travel.
I was really curious about Kat and Cash story and I can say I’m happy with how the story was developed, even sometimes wanting to throttle Cash! 😉
I loved seeing beloved characters and meeting new ones! So, can we have Aria’s book now?
If you love road trips, amazing friendships, and stories that grip your attention, read this series!
Is there nothing better than taking a long ride, windows down, radio blaring to help clear your head? I honestly can’t think of one. It’s a perfect opportunity to be alone with your thoughts to help you get over something, or over someone. Key word here—alone.
Taking a long drive is just what Katherine needs. Desperately. She’s not taken a proper vacation in . . . ever. She spends her days working—filling her time with innocuous tasks, trying to convince herself she’s happy and fulfilled. And trying to figure out a way to get over her unrequited feelings for Cash Greer. He’s her best friend. And she’s considered a member of his family. She will not risk losing her “family” if her feelings aren’t returned.
And, oh boy, does Cash have feelings. He’s been fighting his own feelings for Katherine too. They were buried, and now as they embark on their crazy journey, those feelings are rising to the top. And they’re not going to be kept secret anymore. And that’s when things really get interesting between these two.
I loved the idea of the road trip—and that they were essentially stuck with each other without anyone or anything to buffer them. And that’s just what was needed to get them to finally admit what was happening between them. It was painful to read sometimes—I wanted to hug them and smack them at the same time when they both fought the truth.
But in the end—and what an ending—I adored just where Katherine and Cash ended up. Together. In love. And ready to take on the world. And I can’t wait to see what the next road trip brings with Aria. It’s going to be a doozy, I think!
