Quarter Miles is such a deep and raw story, Devney Perry’s most emotional book yet!
I don’t know what it is about the friends-to-lovers trope mixed with unrequited feelings that makes my heart and soul weep! But, at last, it’s that good, bone deep hurt with a promise of a rainbow at the end that I love; and Quarter Miles depicted this beautifully.
I have to say this series has been Devney’s most fun! Each book focuses on a different Junkyard Kid, runaway teenagers who lived in a junkyard in California. Now, they’ve set out to find themselves, passing along the Red Cadillac, which holds such a great significance to each former runaway’s journey.
Katherine Gate’s past is painful and it hurts for her to relive it, so she has never told her best friend Cash Greer. She’s resilent, a true fighter. When she opens up, you can tell how deep the scars go. But, being in close proximity with Cash has made her life in Montana extremely challenging as deep in her heart she harbors not so friendly feelings for her dearest friend. Willing to fight to keep her friendship intact, Katherine suppresses her feelings for Cash.
This story packed a punch of emotion, yet it was equally sexy and just as sweet. I couldn’t get enough of Kat and Cash!! Their chemistry together was undeniable no matter how much they tried to hide their feelings.
Quarter Miles is an unforgettable read that you need in your fictional life! This series is addicting; and I cannot wait for Aria’s book next!!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.*
Another book into Devney Perry’s fantastic Runaway series, and it’s official. This series has me swooning all the swoons, feeling all the feels and loving each new book even more than I loved the last. The premise of this series is incredibly original, and Perry’s writing has been fresh and creative. For me personally, the benchmark of a truly unique and memorable story is the struggle of wanting to race through a story while simultaneously wanting to slow down enjoy the ride. So far, each of these books in this series has been that special kind of story that I couldn’t read fast enough yet didn’t want to end.
Katherine Gates knew when she arrived at the Greer ranch in Montana that she found what had been looking for—a home. Twelve years later, she’s not only worked her way up to general manager of the posh resort but she’s an honorary Greer family member. Middle son, Cash Greer, returned home from college to find three girls working on his family’s ranch, and the message from his family was crystal clear—they were off limits, so into the friend zone was where Katherine went. Cash and Katherine do have a special relationship, though. They’re best friends and roommates. Somewhere along the way, she’s also fell in love with him, which is an unfortunate complication seeing as he doesn’t return the sentiment. She’s learned over the years to push those feelings down, leaving them hidden and unacknowledged. But the older she gets, the more restless she feels as the desire to settle down and start her own family becomes harder to ignore.
Devney Perry penned an emotional story of friendship and family tinged with the bittersweet sting of unrequited love in Quarter Miles. As heartbreaking as it was heartwarming, I couldn’t help but feel for Katherine as she attempted to come to terms with her feelings for her best friend. Wanting some space and a chance to clear her head and heart of these one-sided emotions, she prepares to head out on a road trip to the coast to surprise an old friend and deliver a piece of their shared history. Unbeknownst to Katherine, however, Cash learns of her plan and is in the passenger seat, riding shotgun, before she can even get the car out of park. Katherine’s not the only one who has time to think out there on the open road, though. Cash has a couple of revelations and realizations of his own as well. All of these new and confusing emotions lead to a few arguments and awkward moments. Pile on years of unacknowledged lust and attraction, and it’s no surprise when it all bubbles over and explodes into passion.
I love a good friends-to-lovers romance, and Quarter Miles was a fantastic one. It was sweet, it was sexy, and there was so much genuine emotion within this hard fought love story. Cash and Katherine captured my attention in the previous book, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. Devney did not let me down, she delivered an unputdownable story that managed to both satisfy me while leaving me hungry for more. Five smooches from me for Quarter Miles by Devney Perry!

One of Devney Perry’s true talents is her ability to write a story with great families. This is no exception. I loved Kat and Cash.
This is a great friends to lovers story and you won’t be disappointed with how it turns out. Kat hasn’t had a great go of it and Cash is protective and I love it. I love the whole them of this series. I read so much that I often see the same storyline over and over and this was different. A great sexy story of two friends coming together. I couldn’t put it down, I was up late and loved every second. Please one click this entire series its just amazing.
A best friends-to-lovers romance that exudes unrequited feels, Quarter Miles is angsty in a way that leaves readers feeling cut wide open by the emotions simmering in every chapter!
Katherine Gates is first introduced in Wild Highway, book two in the Runaway series. Through the passing along of a cherry-red Cadillac, this series centers around reconnecting the six runaway teens who once called a junkyard in California their home; and Katherine ‘Kat’ Gates is one of them. Now, that junkyard and California is a mere smudge of a past as Kat has defied all odds. But, Katherine does not want the new family she has found in the Greers, to see her as her past–dirty and grimy, so she avoids conversations concerning her life in California. Especially, those with her best friend, Cash Greer. Though, her tumultuous relationship and past with her mother still haunts her.
Katherine has been in love with Cash for almost half as long as she’s been in Montana working at the Greer Ranch and Mountain Resort. But Cash only sees her as his best friend, roommate, and little sister; and when he brings his new girlfriend, who no one knew he had, to Friday night dinner, Katherine decides it is time for her to finally let her harbored feelings for Cash go. So, she sets out in the cherry-red Cadillac with a quarter in her pocket to find not only Aria, a fellow junkyard-er, but to find the her who is not so deeply in love with her best friend. But, of course, her trip is upended and the person she was seeking distant from ambushes and invades her adventure. Between the quarter, the miles, and the unacknowledged feelings, the journey from Montana to Oregon becomes one where both Kat and Cash’s secrets are unveiled.
Kat and Cash twisted me up in knots and kept me wound me up tight. There was just something about these two that made this novel the most emotional of the series. Something that existed between these two, festering for years and once it was set free there was no reining it back in.
Devney Perry once again brings readers back to the travelling world of the Runaway series–a series loosely tied and cultivated from the author’s love surrounding her favorite childhood chapter books, the Boxcar Children. Perry’s passion, per se, continues to bind readers emotionally to this series. Still, after three books, I am more delighted than ever, truly transfixed as to where my fictitious mind will arrive next. But one thing is for sure, where that cherry-red Cadillac goes, so will I!
*4,5 stars*
I so adore this series and was looking forward to read Katherine’s story as we learned about her throughout the last few books. It’s a best friend to lovers story that will definitely pull on your heartstrings and make you root for both of them to be together. Can’t wait to see what’s next in store!
Katherine has been in love with Cash from the day that she met him but it doesn’t look like he sees her more than just his best friend and going on a road trip might be the one thing that finally gets her over him. But it takes a small turn as Cash decides to go on the road trip with her when all she just wanted was to get away from him and clear her head. Every day they are together, her heart gets even more attached and it seems he doesn’t really see how this breaks her heart even more. Although they’ve known each other for years, Cash seems to realise that he doesn’t really know her past. This trip makes him see even more that maybe they aren’t just friends and there’s something more lingering underneath the surface. Will Katherine find her way and will Cash finally see the light?… And will they finally have a chance to be together?…
Omg…this series is so freaking good! I swear…the tension between Kat and Cash was going to melt my kindle. I love the runaway connection between all of the kids and how they are still finding their place in the world. Their family. From Londyn to Gemma to Kat, we get to see how the trauma they endured affected their self worth…their entire being even after they experienced some success. These words find a way of reaching inside my heart and pulling me into these stories. I love these strong women. I laugh, cry and bleed with them. I can’t wait for Aria’s book. I literally read this story nonstop in one day because I couldn’t put it down. Like an addict, I want more!
The Daisy Chain of Love rolls on the highway yet again in this third episode of Temecula Kids Adventures. It’s a storm of emotions trapped in a car, that rolls from the pages, right through your heart, leaving indelible tread marks.
“It was a beautiful day outside, bright and clear. But the storm brewing inside the car was as black as midnight.”
Katherine Gates needs to put some distance between her heart and its nemesis, Cash Greer and he needs to companion her on this journey.
She’s at the crossroads of her stagnant life and has to make a tough choice between staying and watching her heart deflate with every smile of cash or go find her own HEA
“”Why did it feel like I’d just been kicked out? Why did it feel like I’d just been given an ultimatum? Get over Cash or go somewhere he’s not.”
Devney writes this Romance travelogue on a road of soul-search with so many feels, I was teary eyed and frustrated no end. Central theme being A woman’s desire to nest playing tug of war with her craving to fit in her adoptive family. It’s poignantly etched in this vividly emotional tale of Unrequited love. The setting is bursting with colors of nature, rolling hills of Montana to crashing waves on the Oregon beach and all the motel stops in between.
“Eight hundred and thirty-one miles of space, to be exact. That was how far it was to Heron Beach, Oregon, from Clear River, Montana.”
Cash and Kat are on opposite sides of the relationship spectrum at the start of the journey and many breathlessly passionate encounters later, are still an inconclusive mess of sentiments, as the Red Cadillac Convertible reaches its intended destination. Matters of the heart aren’t an easily decipherable puzzle and this couldn’t be more obvious between this fated-unfated couple. With the entire Greer clan between them, and then some, it takes a fake mountain Lion to get the ball rolling
I’ve immensely enjoyed this series so far, eagerly anticipating the next book with childlike enthusiasm. Only my tongue hanging out at the drool worthy, lickable men devney conjures up, is very very Adult!!!!
5 stars for Coin Toss decisions
Loved it, the story line. Didn’t want to put it down.
Loved the book. But sometimes I really was annoyed with Katherine. She would always rum away. It must be a trait for all those girls. I loved cash but how could he let his family dictate things for so long and then when he finally changed things his mom was happy. Like come on. There should have a been a convo with his family where he blatantly told them the only reason he kept her firmly in the BFF zone was because of them and how they told him to be with her. But alas no. I loved when they came together. So much raw passion. Loved cash. I just wish she didn’t get mad so often for things out of his control. Yes she at least recognized when she did it wrong like being mad he never responded to her declaration. But knowing it was cause she ran before he could say anything. Plus give the man a minute to digest info. Wow. Lol. Can’t wait for aria. Know it’s gunna be a enemies to lovers binge.
Best friends to Lovers Katherine and Cash’s story was Amazing.
I am really enjoying this series and this is book 3.
Katherine and Cash have been friends and house mates for a long time, ever since Katherine had obtained a job on Cash’s families Ranch…she became like family and so the family had always warned Cash that Katherine was off limits romantically. So he treated her like a friend like a little sister and they got along so well..But Katherine had different feelings she had fallen in Love with Cash and seeing him with other woman was too much and so she decided to take a road trip to deliver a Cadillac to a friend she knew from her past,so she could take it to its owner in California.
But Cash Managed to Hijack the trip and invited himself along…Being this close to Cash for days and telling all their secrets to one another would unexpectedly spark an addictive desire for one another which would either bring them together or tear them apart.
This was a very sexy, passionate, romantic and emotional story that Devney Perry constructed with feeling and enamour…I am loving these characters and finding out their stories.
Another compelling read.
I Highly Recommend it.
5 Stars.
FIVE “JUST BECAUSE” STARS!!!
I devoured Quarter Miles the third book in the Runaway series in one sitting, mostly. Girl has to sleep!! I fell in love with Katherine and Cash in Wild Highway book two of the series so when I found out book three was going to be about them, I was super excited!!
A delicious friends to lover’s romance that takes you on a journey from Montana to Oregon and back again. Kat and Cash’s unrequited love was so emotional and sweet that you could not help but love their story. A bit bummed that we are leaving the Greer’s for Aria’s story in book four, but I have no doubt that Perry will make us fall in love with her story just as much as the last three.
This is the third book in the Runaway Series. I thought it was very unique and Devney Perry’s storytelling was incredible, her characters are intriguing. I absolutely love all the characters in this book!!
Katherine has been in love with Cash since forever, too bad Cash only sees her as a friend!! She has done everything for him to notice her nothing has worked!! Until she decides it is time for her to leave the ranch and try something different. She decides to continue the trip that Londyn and Gemma started, driving the Cadillac rest of the way to California. Boy that got Cash’s attention!! And it looks like Cash is going on the trip with her let the fun begin!!
Can you guess she does not complete the road trip!! As always, this author always delivers incredible epilogues!!
NO SPOILERS!
I am so in love with the Runaway series! Devney Perry took me on an unforgettable, emotional, and inspirational journey in Quarter Miles, and it was a definite MUST READ romance.
Gah, this book was the best and gave me all the feels. I absolutely loved Cash and Katherine’s sweet, sexy, emotional, and swoon-worthy best friends-to-lovers story. I laughed, I cried, I smiled and swooned, and couldn’t have been more thrilled with the outcome. The author definitely gave me the HEA I so desperately wanted for this amazing couple.
Quarter Miles has been my favorite romance in this must read road trip series so far, and I can’t wait to devour the next standalone, Forsaken Trail!
Cash – The handsome, easy going, clueless, younger Greer bro hero who apparently always does what his family tells him to do. Finally discovers on this road trip what he really wants and needs…Katherine as more than a close family friend, co-worker, and roommate. Ah, now he’s finally getting it and ready to fight for love, well, at least before this road trip ends, folks.
Katherine – Finally decides to drive this guy she’s been crushing on for years literally out of her head and heart but still can’t seem to do it. Determined yet back and forth, wishy – washy, she doesn’t feel she’s a true Greer family member despite the love they all seem to have for her. She’s a family member chosen by the heart not blood.
Sorry not sorry, I found the whole navigating by flipping a coin thing plain stupid. You’d be going in circles, folks, and we all know it. Flip it over where to eat or sleep if it must be included, but seriously, whether to turn right or left, just plain dumb. You’d make little progress on an already very l-o-n-g trip.
Sure, I’m always a lover of relationship angst and love to see couples dance around each other and eventually wind up happy together. These two were rather exhausting to walk alongside at times though. I am thankful Cash didn’t disappear two days and nights with another woman he’d been seriously considering dating. It was the last straw that broke Katherine’s heart and put her on a quest to break loose from the unrequited love she felt smothered by. I liked how these two didn’t waste any more time after their true confessions were heard and dealt with.
(I voluntarily read and reviewed a library edition of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not given any payment or compensation for this review. There is no affiliation or relationship between this reviewer and the author, publisher, or any PR firm.)
Quarter Miles is the third book in the Runaway series and is Cash’s and Kat’s story told in dual POV.
I adored Cash and completely understood why he’d kept Kat in the friend zone. For years, his family included and treated Kat like she was one of them. For obvious reasons, Cash didn’t want to do anything that would mess that up for himself or for Kat. They were important to one another and best friends. Once Cash and Kat left on their trip, it didn’t take long for him to realize that she was more than a best friend.
I struggled with my feelings towards Kat. I get that she was hurt and needed to make a change believing that Cash didn’t want her the way she wanted him. However it was hard to feel sorry for Kat when she made the choice to never date and to always be around Cash. From what I gathered, she never told him or even hinted at how she felt. She was also the one who made the decision to move into Cash’s home and become his roommate. Both Kat and Cash were adults and it was exhausting watching them flounder around and not have a conversation about what was happening. Cash tried his best, but every time he did Kat ran. Her childhood was clearly terrible, but it wasn’t fair to be angry at Cash when she kept so much of herself from him. I was so frustrated reading this. But there was a turning point and this book ended in a really sweet place.
Aria’s book is next. Looks likes we’re finally getting closer to meeting the mysterious Karson.
Katherine has been in love with her bestie, Cash, since she came to work on his family’s ranch, but he’s 1) unaware of her feelings 2) apparently thinks and treats her as a younger sister 3) did I mention he’s completely oblivious to her feelings? Cash spent a good portion of the story on the friend side of things, so his sudden interest in Katherine wasn’t the most believable. Even when we got his perspective of the matter, I was still waffling on the sincerity.
Quarter Miles was a tad more angsty than I expected it to be, but still a good read. Katherine and Cash have a few emotional hurdles to work through and when all was said and done, I think they achieved the goal. I am loving the emotional journey each girl is taking with the Cadillac!
5 stars. Just because.
Imagine your favorite friends-to-lovers/unrequited love romance. This one is even better.
After over a decade pining for her best friend, Katherine is desperate for a breath of fresh air before returning home (possibly) and facing the rest of her life getting over the man she loves.
The best way for that is to take the Cadillac for a new adventure and try to find one of her closest friends from her past, a past she wants almost no connection with.
But her trip doesn’t go exactly as planned when the man she’s trying to get away from finds a way to go with her on what was supposed to be a cleansing therapy for her broken heart.
Even more than before, the Cadillac is more than a permanent fixture in the story. It is actually one of the main characters.
Trapped inside it, Kat and Cash are forced to deal with their feelings about each other, and it was as painful as it was beautiful to watch them struggle with so many emotions.
They are more than best friends. They know almost everything about each other (“almost” being the operative word), they are so connected, so in tune with each other, they can read each other like no one else, they know what the other is thinking and their lives is like a machine whose gears run smoothly.
So professing their love could either take them to a whole new level of wonderful, or destroy the most perfect relationship they have with their favorite person – each other.
Just like it happened with the previous book, I couldn’t put this one down. From the moment I started reading it, I was only able to stop at “the end”, and by that time I had heart full of hope and a face filled with a wide smile.
Their love and loyalty were so beautiful. The kind that you can only hope exist in real life.
And the love the whole Greer clan exuded was enthralling and addictive.
Once again the Cadillac brought closure (or even better: a new beginning) to a lost soul, solidifying an already strong love, reuniting old friends and being ready to the next link in the chain.
I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Ahhh! I love Devney Perry’s books so much, I always enjoy her characters and their stories tremendously! This book was no different: an emotional best friends to lovers, steamy romance book that you won’t be able to put down until you reach the final page! I’m a sucker for the unrequited trope so when Quarter Miles by Devney Perry was released I wasted no time and immediately devoured this book. I just knew I wouldn’t be disappointed by this author, never have been and never will be. I was so consumed by Cash and Katherine’s story, it was exactly the kind of romance I love to read. I mean, I loved all the previous books in the Runaway series, but this one has a special place in my heart.
Katherine Gates has been in love with her best friend for a long, long time but her feelings have always been unrequited. The way Katherine sees it, Cash has always viewed her more as a cute younger sister rather than a beautiful woman with whom he could potentially fall in love. Still, Kat held on to hope that maybe someday his feelings toward her would change. Until she couldn’t fool herself and keep waiting for him anymore. She needed to let go of him and move on with her life. Or at least try. A trip to see her friend Aria -whom she hadn’t seen for a very long time- in order to give her Londyn’s Cadillac so that she can, in turn, hopefully give it to Karson (Londyn’s boyfriend in her teenage years) seems like the perfect chance to clear her mind and move on from Cash.
Accompanied only by a quarter coin, one she’s instructed to flip whenever she is to make a turn, she’s ready for her trip. Heads left. Tails right. Let the adventure begin.
Katherine’s plan to leave before her best friend -and roomate- notices doesn’t go as planned thanks to her friend Gemma’s devilish mind. Cash arrives just in time to see her pick up the Cadillac, and there’s no way he’ll let her go on this trip alone.
Getting over Cash would have been relatively easier if he wasn’t sitting beside her, on the passenger seat. This trip was meant for her to get over her growing feelings for her best friend. For Cash, it might as well be the wake up call he needed. Because now that he sees just how gorgeous his best friend is, he is not about to let her go.
I loved Cash Greer! He was such a great friend to Katherine —loyal and fierce— and, as soon as he realised just how non-friendly his feelings for Kat were, he became the greatest partner in crime all of us could have hoped for!
My heart ached whenever Katherine’s past is mentioned, even after reading this book as many times as I have. She is such a remarkable and successful woman, and she owes all that to nobody but herself. Cash truly is a lucky man.
Lastly, I just have to point out how much I liked Aria and how excited I am to read her book! When I read the blurb for Forsaken Trail, I was like… Is it December 29th yet?!
*5 Stars*
This has to be my favourite book in the series so far. I’m a sucker for best friends to lovers books, and this one was no different. I was very interested in these two from the hints in the previous book that they were going to get a story as well.
As the journey of the Cadillac and the Junkyard Kids continues, I can’t help but fall more in love with these characters and the idea for this series as a whole. Katherine’s story had me turning the pages as fast as I could, because I had to know what was going to happen between she and Cash. Cash is a loveable character too, but man he needed to open his eyes.
The internal battles these two had, and the surprise towards the end had me going as well.
The journey of this one and the introduction of the next of the kids from their past was a great one, and I was completely glued to the pages. I felt the characters emotions and I was hanging for their HEA.
Loved this one and can’t wait until the next.
This book is funny, and sweet and all the things a good romance book should be. I really enjoyed it!
