Sue Grafton delivers an intensely gripping mystery based on an actual unsolved murder in this #1 New York Times bestseller featuring private investigator Kinsey Millhone. She was a “Jane Doe,” an unidentified white female whose decomposed body was discovered near a quarry off California’s Highway 1. The case fell to the Santa Teresa County Sheriff’s Department, but the detectives had little to go … detectives had little to go on. The woman was young, her hands were bound with a length of wire, there were multiple stab wounds, and her throat had been slashed. After months of investigation, the murder remained unsolved…
That was eighteen years ago. Now the two men who found the body are nearing the end of their careers in law enforcement—and they want one last shot at the case. Old and ill, they need someone to help with their legwork and they turn to Kinsey Millhone.
Kinsey is intrigued by the cold case and agrees to take the job. But revisiting the past can be a dangerous business, and what begins with the pursuit of Jane Doe’s real identity ends in a high-risk hunt for her killer.

This is a good book. If you like her other books, you will like this one.
Entertaining but not my favor alphabet book. The narrative was quite wordy on inconsequential details.
I find Grafton’s style easy to read yet picturesque description creates a feeling that the reader is there experiencing the action. Her characters are people so well crafted, the reader feels like she knows them.
This is my first Grafton book and it definitely is a good read. I was even more impressed when I later found out it was based on an unsolved case and many of the details were incorporated into the book. Will definitely read more of her books.
I love all of the Alphabet series by Sue Grafton.
Always a great read with Grafton. I started with A and have worked myself through the alphabet.
Once we got to the middle of this series, it truly hit its stride. Yet another well-done case with Kinsey Millhone. I actually had my suspicions about midway through the book. I had it narrowed down to two people, both for roughly the same reason, and I was correct in my theory. In some mystery novels, that would be a bummer, but in this one, as the threads came together to form the picture, it just became more compelling. The characters in this series are always so dark and flawed, it seems, but there’s something about Kinsey and the company she keeps that remains likable. I love that we’re delving into the places of her life that scare her the most — her family and personal life — aaahhhh! emotions! — but not to the detriment of her work. I’m curious to see what happens when we move on to R, what new nuances will be revealed and whose misfortune Kinsey will seek to set right.
Great series!
4 out of 5 stars to Q is for Quarry, the 17th book in the “Kinsey Millhone” mystery series, written in 2002 by Sue Grafton. An interesting fact about this books: it’s based on a real-life case and discovery. A body was discovered on the road side. Police couldn’t figure out who the woman was. No leads on the case. It sat dormant for nearly 20 years. Grafton hoped to shed some light on the case, as it happened in the 1960s. (Remember, her books take place in the 1980s). In Q is for Quarry, the cops who worked the case are older and unable to do any legwork, but they want to solve it before they die. They hire Kinsey to do the work. She needs money and it sounds intriguing. So she goes for it. In real-life, Grafton worked with artists on facial re-construction surgery and helped move the case forward. In the book, Kinsey always gets her (wo)man. Another fun ride along a murder case, readers are in for a treat when they see some of the ways Kinsey goes about solving this case, as well as her relationship with the cops. I enjoyed this one and would recommend it to series fans and as a new read for someone interested in this type of mystery.
I am so sorry we lost Sue Grafton. Her books are always a treat to read.
Working my way through this alphabet series!
Enjoyed the book. Had a hard time keeping up with many minor characters. Had a good ending.
Se Grafton is a favorite author. This book did not disappoint. I love her character K. Millburn (spelling is off). She a bit (a lot) disorganized but a truly believable character.
Sue Grafton is one of my favorite authors!! Kinsey Milhone is a great character. I wait anxiously for every new book in the series.
