Wizard for hire Harry Dresden has to track down the things that go bump in the night in this novel in Jim Butcher’s #1 New York Times bestselling series. There’s no love lost between Harry Dresden, the only wizard in the Chicago phone book, and the White Council of Wizards, who find him brash and undisciplined. But war with the vampires has thinned their ranks, so the Council has drafted Harry as … Council has drafted Harry as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in the Windy City.
As Harry adjusts to his new role, another problem arrives in the form of the tattooed and pierced daughter of an old friend—all grown up and already in trouble. Her boyfriend is the only suspect in what looks like a supernatural assault straight out of a horror film. Malevolent entities that feed on fear are loose in Chicago, but it’s all in a day’s work for a wizard, his faithful dog, and a talking skull named Bob…

Jim butcher has created a wonderful series with amazing characters! The overall story arc gets better and better with each novel. Urban fantasy at its best!
Great story – plenty of action and plot twists that only Dresden can unravel- you won’t put the book down
Another step along wizard Harry Dresden’s path. This character gets more complex with each novel.
Love the Harry Dresden books.
Butchers Harry Dresden character is one of my favorites. This was a book I’d read before but the price was right
Great read
Harry is always a great read. The action just keeps coming! Believable monsters make good reading.
I love this series great writing and wonderful characters. I automatically buy anything by Jim Butcher now but my favorite is still the Harry Dresden series.
Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden books are set in a Chicago in the future where the magic and technology are unpredictable. Harry as part hard boiled detective and part rogue magician is an intriguing character. He doesn’t follow the accepted rules of the game yet always manages to prevail in the end.
Great book. Hard to put down!
Anything by Butcher is a guaranteed great read, especially a Harry Dresden story.
I’ve read the entire series and loved them all.
The challenge is that most of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files books automatically get 5 stars but the zeal of his fan base bear this out. We need a second rating system to rate his books against one another.
Jim Butcher draws from his own experience as a fan and introduced new ongoing characters in this book. As with previous books, he explores horror archetypes and gives them a pseudo scientific explanation without boring the reader. As always Dresden never backs down from those magical and magic wielding beings that are stronger than he is and typically finding a way to survive albeit with scars.
If you don’t read this book and all Dresden books. you’re not as smart as you think you are.
I love all of the Harry Dresden books. Always look forward to the next
Is there such a thing as a bad Harry Dresden tale? No!!
My Take
It’s scary all right. There’s a traitor on the White Council and wizards are dying en masse. Worse, many wizards believe that traitor is Harry. Nothing like a little suspicion to amp up the tension! It gets worse when Molly gets involved in the trouble afflicting the convention. Evil forces are focused on Harry and Molly. Did I mention the tension? What about all the drama? Yep. Keep that defibrillator on call!
Nope, I don’t buy it. I know that Harry’s under a lot of pressure, but I can’t believe that Harry seriously believes that Ebenezar has betrayed his principles by being the Blackstaff. Any group needs an Enforcer, and Harry’s damn lucky that Ebenezar was that wizard! He probably wouldn’t be alive today if he weren’t.
Ooh, I’d forgotten about the Little Chicago in Harry’s sub-basement. When I think of the work involved in creating it . . . I’m glad I’m not doing it! And Harry asks Karrin the big question — about them! Karrin’s response provides all the “right” answers, dang it.
Whoa, major strife in the Carpenter household this past year! Teen versus Mom — guess who’s winning.
It’s those little details Butcher throws in that keeps it fun. Things like the Mickey Mouse alarm clock and the skull, his “pets” and living conditions, brrrrr. Really, I don’t know how Butcher manages to keep track of everything that’s going on.
I love this entire series amazing books
best fantasy series in years
This whole series is great. I really enjoyed reading it.
This book and every other one in this series is amazing. Jim Butcher is a very talented story teller and I recommend any of his books, but started myself with this series and I LOVE it. Well thought out characters and story. Harry is smart and funny and by far one of my favorite heroes. (I usually go for books with strong female heroins)
