I was blown away and in such a fantastic way.
I have been a fan of Nicole’s since 2012 and have every one of her books, but when I heard she was trying a new genre, paranormal, I was a bit skeptical. Paranormal was so different from her other books, and to write a book where are already fabulous authors out there who rock this subject, I just couldn’t understand why she wanted to go there. Boy oh boy, I am so glad she took this one, Nicole ROCKED IT! She caught me at the first few sentences and I could put it down. She even mentions the other amazing authors and gives them credit for writing those books in such a way that I was cheering out loud.
Obsidian and Penelope Calazans are fated to be each others perfect mate, but they have to meet, fall in love and go through a ceremony to seal their souls together for eternity. If that seems just a little bit challenging, I mean, finding your one perfect mate in the entire earth’s population, there are Lucifer’s demons out there trying to prevent this from ever happening.
If you are a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon or J.R. Ward, then this is a new series you will love (and yes, Nicole mentions both authors in this book). It is about Angels, Demons, Vampires, Fey and Wares. It is different from other books you have read but absolutely real, and entertaining. Like I said, I couldn’t put it down and I don’t think you will be able to either.
Let’s just say what a powerful and beautiful love between Obsidian and Penelope. Throw in a few Angels, Demons, and one or two vampires, WOW! I can’t wait to see which brother is next in Nicole’s head. I am not normally a paranormal reader but she had me hooked early in this book. Great job, Nicole! By the way who is next?
Angels and Demons and Fae, Oh My!! I have been a PNR fan for many years and it has got to be difficult for authors to come up with new fantastical ideas to write about but somehow on Nicole Edwards’ first dabble into this genre, she has done it in an epic way! This book is absolutely amazing and captivated me from the beginning! From the incredible story line to the depth of these wonderful new and unique characters, everything about this book makes me long for more in this fantastic new paranormal series. I will not spoil this book in my review because honestly reading it for yourself is the only way to experience it. If you are looking for a new PNR series that will have you on the edge of your seat one minute, fanning yourself the next, all while wishing you could be part of their world, then this is the one for you. Ms. Edwards gives a nod early on in the story to two of my very favorite PNR authors, and I knew right then that this new world and new characters she has created were going to be special!!
I love this book and these characters so much and cannot wait for the next book in this captivating new series!! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something a little different!!!
Protected In Darkness is the first PNR by the talented Nicole Edwards, and boy did she hit it out of the park!
Obsidian a Warrior Angel seeks to find his soul mate before the demons catch up to her. It’s mysterious, thrilling and highly erotic, the emotions, the incredible characters and intriguing plot make this a must read for any Nicole Edwards fan!
Nicole Edwards is known for her scorching hot and boundary pushing romances. Her books are downright sinful and she isn’t afraid to pull out the stops. So, when I heard that Nicole Edwards was dipping her toes into the paranormal genre, I couldn’t wait to see what she would bring to the table. I’m happy to report that Nicole Edwards new series does not disappoint and will leave readers excited for more.
Protected in Darkness is the first book in the Misplaced Halos Series and it follows the story of Penelope and Obsidian. Obsidian is part of a Celestial Brotherhood and his mission is to protect humanity from Lucifer’s demons. In return for saving humanity, Obsidian is promised a soul mate. He longs for the day that his soul finds its missing piece. Obsidian’s mission was supposed to be simple, until Obsidian learns of a traitor in their mists. Obsidian has only one objective now: find his soul mate before the traitor is able to get his hands on her…..Penelope has always known that she was a little different. She can sense others emotions and at times, it can be really overwhelming. However, as time has gone by, she’s learned how to deal. Penelope spends her days in Sin City, serving drinks in a local casino. Penelope thought she was ok with the status quo, but the moment she encounters Obsidian, her entire world is turned upside down…..
Overall, I thought this book was an enjoyable read. I really enjoyed Obsidian and Penelope together. Their chemistry was instant and definitely a case of insta-love. That being said, when it comes to these two characters, it just worked for me. I loved the tension and the pull between them. I loved the idea of soul mates and fate and a pull that can’t be denied. I liked the world that the author created, giving us a little taste of heaven and hell and everything in between. It reminded me a lot of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series and it would not surprise me one bit if I found out that this author was inspired by that series to write this book. The story felt familiar to me, yet different at the same time.
Protected in Darkness kicks off the Misplaced Halos Series to a really good start. The stage has been set and we have been introduced to a ton of characters, a few whom I’m hoping we’ll get to see more of. This story provides some good action, but is definitely a more romance based story. I’m looking forward to seeing this world expand and grow as the series goes on. I’m also looking forward to seeing more of these Celestial beings and seeing them all find their soulmates…..
I am already hooked and anxious for the next one. A brilliant take on angels here on earth that will make you wish it were true. And the writing is amazing. Winged warriors here on earth to protect us humans from the demons that roam around. Each one now on a time line to find their true soul mates before Satan does. If he gets the angel’s soul mate’s soul he gets the angel’s. Power he can never have. The journey for Obsidian and Penelope is captivating and emotions all over the place. Laugh, cry, worry, and happiness grips you in this book. Not to mention the sexy times are off the chart. Holy Hotness…All the character’s in the book have their part to play, and yes there are “things” left a bit hanging, but the journey of Obsidian and Penlope comes full circle to their HEA. So excited…this first book is off the charts excellent, never read anything like it.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review.

I have to say that I am not much of a paranormal reader. However if I am going to read one it will be by Nicole Edwards. I was not disappointed and I devoured this book actually. I thought that it was amazing and such a beautiful story. You need to be prepared to meet a lot of character’s. This book is full of them. However it does just focus on the two main characters and I fell so in love with Obsidian and Penelope. These two have some of the most amazing chemistry. These two really take the time to talk and get to know each other and really have the most amazing connection. They way it really should be done by all of us. I too love how Obsidian is not an alpha male and he doesn’t force her into doing thing his way. He eases her into this. Really they have one of the most amazing connections I have ever read about. There too are things going in this book that your not going to understand at first but Nicole Edwards has done an amazing job of explaining everything and how things in this book work. It is absolutely amazing and I loved it. I can not wait to see what we get next in this series. I fell so in love with this book.
Protected in Darkness is Nicole’s first forage into paranormal romance. I’m usually into vampires and shifters but this is Angels and Demons. But since I’m a big fan of Nicole’s books, when she was asking for volunteers to read and review, I didn’t hesitate.
Well let me tell you: She. Blew. Me. Away!!
This is the beginning of an amazing series. I absolutely loved this book.
Obsidian and his brothers have to find their soulmates before the Demons do or Lucifer will gain control of the Angels souls. So it’s a race against time.
Obsidian and his soulmate, Penelope are the first couple. I love their connection and banter. As with all of her other books, the emotions are flying high with laughter, happiness, sometimes tears and of course the romance. And O. M. G. the sex is on Fire !!
Do not hesitate to read this book if you are into paranormal. If you haven’t read one yet, then take a chance with this one. I don’t think you will be sorry.
I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. Amazing job Nicole.
(It did take me awhile to get used to some of the terminology used, but by the end I was ok.)
5 Star review of Protected in Darkness (Misplaced Halos #1) by Nicole Edwards
Do you believe in Angels? I freely admit that paranormal stories are not one of my go to genres to read. However when I learnt that Nicole Edwards, an author I love, was writing paranormal series, I knew I had to read. I was intrigued as to how she would write this series and I was not disappointed.
I will be honest and admit I was a tad confused at first, but once I got my head around the terminology/names used I was well and truly drawn into the story that Ms.Edwards wove.
Obsidian is an angel but is known as a Misplaced Halo. They are not allowed to become involved with humans unless it is their soulmate, known as their amsouelot. They are there to protect humans from Lucifer’s demons.
When danger rears it’s head in Heaven, Obsidian must seek out his amsoulet, Penelope Calazans and protect her at all costs. Penelope is an empath who can feel others feelings. Although she does not get anything from Obsidian, it quickly becomes apparent that there is a strong bond between them. AS expected with a Nicole Edwards story, there was plenty of heat and some humour.
There were parts of this book where I struggled a little with some of the grittier descriptive scenes but they are pivotal to the story being told. If you are a fan of paranormal romance then this book will be right up your alley. Protected in Darkness is a well written love story about true soul mates that just happens to revolve around Angels and Demons.
I have had a fascination with Angels most of my life, so when one of my favorite authors is writing a paranormal romance featuring Angels, I was over the moon! This is Edwards’s first book in the paranormal department and I think she did an awesome job.
Most of what I know of Angels I have read in books and of course seen on t.v. and movies. Edwards puts a totally new spin on the Angels in her book. Maybe because of Obsidian and his six brothers were made to keep humans safe from demons sent to earth by Lucifer. Hence the name Misplaced Halos or Warrior Angels. A huge thank you to Edwards for putting the list of new words and their meaning in the back of the book. That was very helpful.
I have always believed in soul mates and this book just makes me love the idea even more. What Obsidian and Penelope go through to finish the circle of soul mates is a bit extream, but love how it is done in the book. It is truly heartbreaking.
Without doing any spoilers, there isn’t much I can tell you that isn’t in the blurb. So instead of giving you a rundown of the blurb, I am just telling you my thoughts and feelings about this book.
If you are a Nicole Edwards fan, this isn’t like her other books, but you should give it a try. I think you might be pleasantly surprised.
I can’t wait until she comes out with another Misplaced Halos book!
Ok first and foremost I’ll immediately have to do a re-read of this epic tale. Not because it was difficult to understand or fall in love with Obsidian and Penelope but because starting this amazing debut PNR novel from Nicole Edwards whilst on a week long Mediterranean cruise with a sightseeing loving husband is not my idea of ‘being immersed’ in a new reading adventure.
Fortunately, a sunny day and a destination we’ve visited before, resulted in uninterrupted reading time allowing me the opportunity to lose myself in this ‘new world’ that has been crafted so beautifully.
Obsidian and his brothers have a quest surrounded in mystery, that needs to be fulfilled. They’re up against time and, of course, various supernatural bad guys who are all out to prevent the brothers’ success.
I have loved all of Nicole’s previous work and usually profess ‘that if it’s not broken, don’t fix it’ but I’ve got to applaud the bravery it’s undoubtedly taken to branch out and attempt something different.
If Protected In Darkness is the shape of what’s to come from this new series, readers are in for one heck of a ride! Hold on tight, you’ll definitely want to ride the Misplaced Halos reading rollercoaster over and over again.
I do not read Paranormal romances, but when I found out my favorite author Nicole Edwards was writing a new series I had to check it out. Obsidian and his six brothers were sent to earth to protect the humans from Lucifer and his demons that are looking to steel souls. They are Angel warriors that have been on earth for hundreds of years, they are not allowed to get involved with the humans, unless they are their true soulmate. Somehow Lucifer got a hold of the list from Heaven telling him all of the angels soulmates and now they have to find them before his demons do. Or they will both loose their souls.Obsidian finds his soulmate, Penelope a lonely cocktail waitress. Their connection is immediate, and now they must bond before the demons find her. This book has lots and lots of sex as they are both in pain if they don’t! I can’t believe I am saying this but it was too much sex and wanted more plot. There are many characters to remember so it gets a little confusing. Still loved the story and look forward to the next book.
While Nicole Edwards is one of my top 5 favorite authors (the order is fluid and those top 5 shift as my mood changes and new books are released), this is her first foray into paranormal romance. Which is funny since she’s the one that got me back into the genre a couple years ago. Being a super-fan means I also subscribe to her newsletter and she sometimes tells us what she’s reading. She got me hooked on Rebecca Zanetti when I decided to give one of her recommendations a try. (There are also some paranormal books and authors in this story that I’ll be checking out as soon as possible.) I love this author’s writing style in her contemporary romance, so knew that wouldn’t be an issue here. But it remained to be seen if she could carry off the plot and world building of a paranormal story. She can and she does!
There are a lot of characters to meet in this book, but the story quickly zooms into our main subjects for this go around so as not to get too confusing. The reader needs to meet all of Obsidian’s “family” in order to understand the story, but it’s done in an organic way that makes sense and doesn’t overwhelm. Since Penelope is on the other end of the spectrum of friends and family, meaning she’s more of a loner, we get to know her through her interactions with coworkers, her inner dialogue, and her phone calls to her best friend in another state. I enjoyed getting to know Penelope in the context of her friendship with Winnie. Although it wasn’t face to face, the things they said and did while talking really gave me a feel for her character and endeared the character to me.
Obsidian and Penelope have great chemistry from the start. Things move fast, but I love a line later in the book about humans measuring depth of emotion on time and how time is irrelevant. How true that is! I enjoy that there chemistry is very sexual, but it’s also more. They spend time talking and getting to know one another and really connect emotionally and intellectually. Although it would be so much easier for Obsidian to do things another way, he attempts to ease Penelope into things instead of going all alpha on her and bulldozing into her life. He takes great care with her brother and best friend even though they complicate matters and it would be easier to push them to the side.
There’s a lot going on in this book in order for the author to build this world. There are unfamiliar words and customs. She does a beautiful job of keeping the confusion at bay. The words can be intuited from the text and things are explained in a way that is fluid and natural to the story. All the makings of an immersive paranormal romance series. (I have to note how much I love the title now that I’ve read the book, too.)
Now that I’ve had a taste of one of my favorite authors writing outside her usual genre, I’m ready for more. This one should satisfy Nicole Edwards’ fans and paranormal romance fans alike.
**I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the author. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given freely**
Let me first say paranormal is not normally a genre I read but after hearing one of my favourite authors announcing she was branching out I had to check it out ….wow is all I can say I was left speechless and I have to say if you are a lover of paranormal Protected in Darkness is a must read and if romance is your choice of reading then you will also want to one click this amazing love story.
This is a beautifully well written love story about soulmates, it’s about angels and demons and what this couple have to do to be together. It’s a book with all feels, it’s hot, it’s romantic and it has just the right amount of humour, sizzling chemistry and a story that will keep you on the edge of seat all make this perfect, Do you believe in Angels, if you didn’t before you picked up this book you certainly will after reading Penelope and Obsidian’s story.
Looking forward to book 2 in the Misplaced Halos Series.
Do you believe in Angels?
I normally don’t run to read paranormal romance but when Nicole Edwards, one of my go to authors, announced she was dipping her toes into this world I had to check it out!
If you are a fan of paranormal, you should definitely check this out! She has hit a home run with Protected in Darkness and I can’t wait to see where she takes the rest of her Misplaced Halo series!
I always love her writing but this storyline is fantastic and her characters I can’t get enough of.
Obsidian and Penelope are fated to be together but first they have to find each other. Once they do, Obsidian knows he should take his time showing Penelope what his world is all about but between the incredible, undeniable desire they have towards one another and the demons that are trying to interfere, Obsidian has to speed up his introductions and complete the ceremony necessary to keep them bonded for eternity!
Obsidian is an angel but is referred to as the Misplaced Halos. They were sent to Earth to protect humans from Lucifer’s demons. They are not allowed to interact with the humans unless they are their amsouelet, their soul mate. In Heaven there is a list of the angels mates but it gets leaked to Lucifer and he is sending demons to kill them. If an angel and his soul mate mates first, then the soul resides in heaven. Penelope is a waitress in Las Vegas, she moved to be closer to her twin brother. She is an empath and can feel others feelings. When she meets Obsidian, she gets nothing and it’s a relief but she soon realizes there is something between them. Obsidian has waited for centuries for his soul mate and falls for her immediately but Penelope thinks they are going too fast and can’t keep her feelings for him hidden for long. When the demons get to close, they head for their home in Colorado. Can they do the mating ritual before the demons come for them?
I love Nicole’s stories but this one grabs you and doesn’t let go. It was a tiny bit confusing the first couple of pages in the first chapter ( to me ) but once it started going I couldn’t put it down. Sexy, romantic, and a little humor.
