Describe Jake Hopkins in two words? Boozing womanizer. So, maybe he solved cases with a precision not seen since Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot. It didn’t matter. The guy was a grade A prick. And killing him was the best decision I ever made—until it wasn’t.It was supposed to be a good move for me—a way of showing that I wasn’t one to back down.I never imagined it would cause such a visceral … that I wasn’t one to back down.
I never imagined it would cause such a visceral reaction…among my readers.
I didn’t get it. He was barely tolerable most of the time and his death opened the door for a new detective—maybe one who had her act together.
I never would’ve guessed that he’d show up on my doorstep, begging for a second chance, or that he’d look even better than I ever imagined. Characters die and everyone moves on—that’s the way it works. Sometimes it’s even necessary for the story to progress.
When the hate mail gives way to something more sinister, Jake insists that he’s just the man to handle the case. He vows to keep me safe in exchange for his life.
The problem isn’t resurrecting him.
No, my problem is much worse.
How do I stop myself from falling in love with a fictional character?

This is the first book I’ve read by Shannon Myers, and it did not disappoint. The characters are witty and funny. The story had a few twists and they played out really well.
Hayden Michael’s is a writer, a cat lover, enter her cat Bootsy whom she spoils. She’s worried about everyone else’s feelings and will even fib to not hurt someone’s feelings. Her family emotionally beat her down, her writing is not a real job, be more successful like your brother, etc. She’s written around six or so books and five of them sold like crazy, the sixth One in a he Chamber, well not so much. She killed off her main character Detective Jake Hopkins in a “Jake Hopkins Mystery” so where does the series go from there? Her fans are not happy with her choice and the agent she was trying to get told her no due to her killing off the main character in the series. Career suicide.
Jake Hopkins was a fictional character in Hayden Michael’s last three books, until Hayden had him pushed from a 30-story patio. Jake is now knocking on her door to get her to bring him back into his story.
Some things start to happen around Hayden, a brick thrown at her window, attempted poisoning via weed in a cup cake, which Jake ate even though it was meant for Hayden, someone is trying to scare Hayden into doing something and Jake is going to protect get until she gets him written back into his own story.
The attraction between Hayden and Jake is smoldering, it’s a love hate kind of thing or more to the point they hate to love each other. Jake is having feelings for Hayden and Hayden is head over toes in love with Jake. And everyone loves Bootsy, Hayden’s cat, who a friend of Jake’s, Max introduced Bootsy to Bob Ross Painting Videos seems the cat has not been the same since, she’s so calm now.
Can fiction and reality live together? It’s worth getting a copy of this book to find out.
Now this is entertaining! Fictional character shows up on your door step?!
Hayden Michaels is a writer, who just recently killed off her main character. People are NOT happy. Including the real life Jake Hopkins.
She things he’s imagining him showing up until her friend tells her she can see him.
Jake just wants Hayden to fix his stony and bring him back to life.
It’s funny, adorable and very interesting take on if you brought you’re book boyfriend to life. A definite page turner!
Protagonized by Shannon Myers a five-star read you will make you come to life. This was one of my most anticipated reads of this year and I’m glad to say that it will be one of the best. The moment this one dropped on my kindle, I had to start, and I was so hooked I decided that sleep is for wimps. The whole premise of this book was one that I was so excited about, and it done so well. Hayden is someone who’s live you will get sucked into and at times she annoyed me, but I didn’t care I needed to get deeper into her story, I will even own up to the fact I adore Bootsy and I’m so much more a dog person than cat. Detective Jake Hopkins is a character that will make you scream and chuckle in the same moment. I can’t wait to read more from this series.
Ms. Myers has done it again. She stated going in that this was something very different for her, and it is, but in the best kinds of ways!
This is a hilarious love/hate exploration of what it’s like to be a writer, make a decision to kill off a character and face the interesting consequences when that character comes to life wanting to be written back in! Jake and Hayden are quite the match, in wits and snark and chemistry. There’s something really special about the fun you can have when reality and fiction intersect.
As someone who also writes, the idea that you don’t actually know everything about the characters you’ve created is interesting and terrifying – and who has wondered where characters go after they are killed off?
Fast-paced entertainment with an element of slow-burn love-to-hate romance. Great side characters (Aaris and Bootsy are just the cat’s pajamas and worthy of so much more than this little mention) and great drama with a dash of suspense.
You won’t ever regret picking up a Shannon Myers novel! Just go get it!
Protagonized by Shannon Myers is the story of Jake Hopkins and Hayden Michaels.
Hayden is a writer who’s family doesn’t believe in her and when she goes to kill of a popular charcter Jake Hopkins in her books, her fans are upset. Feeling somewhat out of sorts with all that is going on she is stunned to open her door to a man asking for her with her book in his had. It turns out he is claiming to be Jake Hopkins.
This is defiantly a different take on a romance but none the less it was one book that I enjoyed seeing how there story was going to play out. Totally enjoyed it.
2.75 stars–PROTAGONIZED by Shannon Myers is a contemporary, adult, stand alone multi-genre, erotic romantic suspense story line focusing on indie-author Hayden Michaels, and Detective Jake Hopkins-a fictional character brought to life.
Told from first person point of view (Shannon Myers) PROTAGONIZED follows indie-author Hayden Michaels in the wake of potential disaster after killing off the lead character in her ‘Detective Jake Hopkins’ series of novels. As her star rating plummets, and the negative reviews begins to affect her ability to write, a familiar stranger arrives at Hayden’s door, demanding a second chance. Enter Detective Jake Hopkins, the male lead (and cover model) in the heroine’s stories. Demanding a re-write, or at the very least a different direction for his story line character Jake encounters more than he can handle with our story line heroine.
The premise, and potential for PROTAGONIZED to be an entertaining story line got lost in the frenetic pacing, the multi-troped and seemingly scattered direction of the story line content wherein further explanation is required and necessary at a number of junctures. The heroine, an author struggling in the face of an unfavourable release following the death of her leading anti-hero, is often stoned, bubbleheaded, flustered, and caught unaware, as her own life follows a fictional tale of romantic suspense, murder and mystery, come to life.
Sadly, the crazy and frenzied, back and forth, and oft times, confusing direction of the overall story left me discouraged and uncertain. The author’s attempt at humor and comedy felt forced on many occasions, and other times missing the mark completely. I don’t understand all of the 5 star reviews, but to each their own-everyone is entitled to their own opinion- I am just not sure if we read the same story. I had a difficult time connecting to the heroine, her plight, or anything that mattered.

Wow, Protagonized is completely different from what I was expecting.
I didn’t knew Shannon Myers, neither researched before (which already proved to be a mistake several times), but, reading the blurb, I thought I’d like the book.
I started reading and realized the book was nothing like I was expecting. But wasn’t bad either. On the contrary, the book is super cool. Protagonized is really crazy and made me happy.
Hayden and Jake are awesome. Their relationship is excellent.
Bootsy is a crazy lady. All books should have an animal.
Protagonized is a fun reading with great characters.
Thank you Shannon

Protagonized é bem doido e me deixou feliz.
A Hayden e o Jake são espetaculares. A relação deles é excelente.

I liked that this was a different concept, however I didn’t like it, I didnt like the characters and couldn’t connect to them, and honestly I just could not connect with the book. I started and stopped and started again, and finally just couldn’t do it..Sorry folks hate giving bad reviews or soso ones but it was not for me
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) Voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions.
Protagonized by Shannon Myers
Not what I was expecting and not for me…I liked the premise of fictional characters coming to life but I didn’t relate will to Hayden or Jake or their interactions and pretty much didn’t get “it” at all. I mean, I could follow the story, kind of, but it was silly and all over the place and not very deep and… Anyway, I almost didn’t finish it but decided to skim to see what would happen and though there seems to be a HEA I am still having trouble figuring out how the plane of humans and fictional characters manages to intersect and interact…guess one has to suspend believe completely. I am sure there are some readers who love this book and believer there is a reader for every book…that said…I would like to thank NetGalley and the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Low stars…1-3 Stars…depending on the review site
