J. P. Beaumont’s latest investigation strikes too close to home in this riveting mystery from New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance.Be careful what you wish for . . . Before he retired, J. P. Beaumont had looked forward to having his days all to himself. But too much free time doesn’t suit a man used to brushing close to danger. When his longtime nemesis, retired Seattle crime reporter … nemesis, retired Seattle crime reporter Maxwell Cole, dies in what’s officially deemed to be an accidental fire, Beau is astonished to be dragged into the investigation at the request of none other than the deceased victim himself. In the process Beau learns that just because a long-ago case was solved doesn’t mean it’s over.
Caught up in a situation where old actions and grudges can hold dangerous consequences in the present, Beau is forced to operate outside the familiar world of law enforcement. While seeking justice for his frenemy and healing for a long fractured family, he comes face to face with an implacable enemy who has spent decades hiding in plain sight.

I love anything by J A Jance. All her characters are great.
Love this book! Another great one by Jance!
I enjoyed how JA Jance has kept the characters moving forward and aging. The tone of the books has also continued — they are lower key than many procedurals, with lots of details. I particularly liked all the stories of Seattle from the 70s and 80s to the present. The author and characters are like old friends. Thanks for continuing to deliver!

Good characters
Enjoyable as all JA Jance books are. Loved the characters.
I love all of J,A. Jance’s books The characters seem quite believable and the plots generally have a twist but I am always satisfied when the book is complete. In this book a tween is trying to get justice for her father because her mother has wrongfully implicated him in a murder.
I have followed this author and loved this book, just like all that I’ve read.
If you are a Beaumont fan it is a must/read. I’m not to into Mel but she keeps the story going. Brings closure to some of the earlier cops in case you are a real Beau person. It is great and keeps flowing
Prefer the Sheriff Brady books. Slow moving. Liked Lucy.
Another great read from Ms. Jance.
One more wonderfully-written book by Jance. All of her books are great, and I keep looking for more!
I loved this book!
Well written. Kept me reading non-stop. I have previously read almost all J A Jance’s Joanna Brady series, but this was my first JP Beaumont book. I think I will continue to read the whole series. Really like JA Jance’s writing style.
I loved the characters–police and ex-police who are not so bitter it’s hard to read about them. These were actually characters with insights and compassion but without the self-loathing that characterizes so many such characters.
It’s always a pleasure to find a Jance I haven’t read. This did not disappoint.
This is a good story and a fast moving well written book, but the author kept referring to their other books, which began eventually to feel like a commercial. The ending went right into a teaser for another book, and then yet another. I felt a tad conflicted, as I really wanted to rate this 5 stars, but in good conscience could not. It’s worth buying and reading, but beware and just skip over the constant commercial references to other of the authors works.
The characters were are lkeable and story well written. Totally enjoyed this book and I was sorry when it was over!
I loved this book I have found you cannot go wrong getting a J.A. Janice book.
Enjoyed the bringing together of JP Beiumont & Sherriff Brady! Interesting plot and actually realistic.
