J. P. Beaumont’s latest investigation strikes too close to home in this riveting mystery from New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance.Be careful what you wish for . . . Before he retired, J. P. Beaumont had looked forward to having his days all to himself. But too much free time doesn’t suit a man used to brushing close to danger. When his longtime nemesis, retired Seattle crime reporter … nemesis, retired Seattle crime reporter Maxwell Cole, dies in what’s officially deemed to be an accidental fire, Beau is astonished to be dragged into the investigation at the request of none other than the deceased victim himself. In the process Beau learns that just because a long-ago case was solved doesn’t mean it’s over.
Caught up in a situation where old actions and grudges can hold dangerous consequences in the present, Beau is forced to operate outside the familiar world of law enforcement. While seeking justice for his frenemy and healing for a long fractured family, he comes face to face with an implacable enemy who has spent decades hiding in plain sight.

Jance is one of my favorite authors and JP Beaumont is my most favorite character. Love the character development and can’t wait to see what JP is up to next.
Love these characters
Keep you up late, page turner, hair stands on end! Thanks!! A great read!
Not quite as good as most books in the series
Loved this. Kept me reading to the end. Entertaining story and plot.
It kept me on the wanting to get back to it all the time!
I love J. P. Beaumont books. This one kept my attention and hinted at a newer series. I cannot wait.
I am a major fan of Jance, no matter which series I pick up. The Beaumont series is fabulous, and this is another in a long string of very worthwhile and entertaining mystery/crime reads. Highly recommend!
I love the J.P. Beaumont series by J. A. Jance. Also by Jance, The Joanna Brady series. These are murder mysteries and very captivating reading.
Love all of the JP Beaumont books and Sheriff Brady. This is an author that I reread.
This book was great, just as all of Judith Jance’s are. I have read all of her books, this being the last one, until her new Joanna Brady book comes out in September. I can’t wait!
Nice for readers familiar with Puget Sound
This is a fun read for fans of the J.P. Beaumont series. Author J.A. Jance skillfully creates a new story while weaving in bits and pieces of past history which fans will recall. What was new for me was the humor she added. I laughed out loud!
As always, Jance delivers a well crafted story and leaves you guessing!
Held your attention throughout.
J.P. Beaumont, a retired homicide detective, has no trouble what so ever accidentally falling into a murder(s). This 72-year-old veteran of the Seattle Police Department is backed up by the Bellingham Chief of Police (aka J.P.’s wife Mel). As a former Washingtonian, I loved the authentic local (Western WA) color Jance included in the book. Even without the personal connection to the area, I found PROOF of LIFE thoroughly entertaining. It kept me up until after 2:00 a.m. a couple nights.
QUESTION: Will Rambo/Lucy wiggle her way into J.P.’s and Mel’s household?
JA Jan e never disappoints!
Great read as are all books in this series. Love the story line and fell like the characters are old friends.
JA Jance’s novels featuring PJ Beaumont are treasures to me.Been reading them for at least 25 years. Now I feel like reading them is a family update although my family is not steeped in murders and investigative work. Her characters are real and push their way into the reader’s liking. Great plots, character development, and heart-felt resolutions. Humor, even. How could one not appreciate such a combination? If you have not read JA Jance’s Beaumont books, start at the beginning for a true author love affair.
Always enjoy the JPBuemont books, Joanna Brady is OK, but being a guy with a sense of humor, and I like the DOG! JP needed a pooch, and he got a big one to slobber through life with!
Good, exciting read, thanks Mrs. Janice!
