Can the course that they’ve set for the future handle a slight detour…?
Macey and Ben Samuelson have much to be thankful for: great friends, a beautiful—if high-maintenance—Victorian house on idyllic Tybee Island, and a rock-solid marriage. The only thing missing is what they want the most. After her fifth miscarriage in six years, Macey worries that the family they’ve always dreamed of might be out of reach. Her sister suggests adoption, but Macey and Ben aren’t interested in pursuing that path…until a three-legged golden retriever named Keeper wags his way into their home and their hearts.
Harper Wheaton just got kicked out of another foster home and it won’t be the last if she keeps losing her temper. She’s not sure why she gets mad; maybe because no family seems to want a nine-year-old girl with a heart condition. She loves her social worker, Cora, but knows that staying with her forever isn’t an option. Will she ever find a family to call her own?
As a physician’s assistant, Macey meets lots of kids. Harper Wheaton’s a tough one, but Macey knows the little girl has already struggled more than most. It gets Macey and Ben to thinking about all the children who need homes. Then Harper goes missing, and one thing is suddenly crystal clear: life is complicated—but love doesn’t have to be.

PROMISES OF THE HEART
By NaN Rossiter
I really love when you a truly good for the soul book that comes full circle. Mrs. Rossiter really can really write a page turner that stirs your emotions in every which way. The drama in this book was intense but heartfelt and rings true to the saying, “What is meant to be, will be”.
This story is told from two main viewpoints, Macey who is married to Ben and facing difficulties and pain in life leaving her to question if they were meant to be parents. Then there is Harper who has been in one foster home to another and is in need of a loving family and home. Being kicked out of many Foster homes, it brings to question what this little girl has been through in her short life.
Bring in Harper’s caring DCFS caseworker, Cora who loves her like her own child and is determined to find a home to embrace Harper. But when they find out Harper has a deadly heart condition, that makes the search for a loving home even more difficult.
Unable to talk but playing a pivotal role is Keeper, the 3 legged Golden that Macey and Ben adopt. His owner had passed away and ended up in the kennel all alone. When he arrives at his newly adopted home, the love and healing that can come from an animal that is so raw and pure can work miracles.
The three of their lives intertwine and one thing they all seek is a family. This novel truly was so touching and I wished the story never had to end. I recommend this for a good soul comforting read that will also have you at the edge in moments that you can’t put down.
Nan Rossiter, author of “Promises of the Heart” has beautifully written an endearing, emotional, heartwarming, poignant, captivating and memorable novel. The genres for this story are fiction and women’s fiction. The timeline for this story is in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events. The author describes her characters as mostly likable, kind, and people you would want for neighbors. There are some adorable animals in this novel as well.
Nan Rossiter has a wonderful way of telling her story and vividly describes her characters and setting. I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of family, friendship, giving, kindness, love, and hope. The author also mentions that not everything in life is perfect, but if you believe and have hope, things can get better.
Macey and Ben Samuelson are happily married and have had some difficult times and disappointments. More than anything, they would like a family. Macey talks Ben into adopting a three-legged dog that is very gentle and sweet. Before long, Keeper, the dog is part of the family.
At her job, Macey meets a young girl who needs a foster home. Harper is nine years old and is one determined and stubborn little girl. Harper keeps being sent to other foster homes. Cora, her social worker, wishes that she could find a forever home for Harper. Unfortunately, Harper has other problems. This makes Macey and Ben wonder about children that need homes, and if they should have the chance.
This is a wonderful thought-provoking novel that I highly recommend. The story pulled at my heartstrings. This was a wonderful book to read especially during the crisis that we have been facing.
This is a beautifully written, emotional novel about love and acceptance…love within a marriage, within a family, love shared with a foster child. The characters were well written and felt like people that I know in real life. The story will touch your heart and stay in your thoughts long after the last page.
Macey and Ben live in a restored Victorian house on Tybee Island. They are deeply in love but after six years of marriage and five miscarriages, they are beginning to doubt that they’ll ever have the family that they’ve dreamed of. They don’t want to adopt but begin to change their minds when they decide to foster Harper, a nine year old girl with a heart condition and an attitude that has gotten her kicked out of numerous foster homes. Can they change their hopes of having a baby and learn to accept Harper and make her part of their family?
My favorite character was Harper — she was a feisty young girl who knew how to stand up for herself. She wants to be part of a family but isn’t able to control her temper and keeps getting sent back. It was fantastic to see her blossom once she became part of a family.
I’m thrilled to know that there is a book two in this series so we can learn more about these wonderful characters and hopefully see more of Harper as she finally has the life that she’s always dreamed of.
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
I love books that give you all the good feelings that touch your heart. Promises of the Heart by Nan Rossiter is one that touched my heart.
Macey and Ben Samuelson have a high maintenance house on Tybee Island. Their dream is to fill it with kids. Macey has 5 miscarriages in 6 years and she fears the family they dreamed will never come true. They rejected the idea of adoption until a three legged dog named Keeper enters their Lives
Harper Wheaton has been kicked out of several foster homes because of her temper. She feels she will never have a true family because she also has a heart condition. Macey is a physician’s assistant and meets Harper when she comes in for a check up. Macey realizes Harper has had a tough life and starts thinking of all the children that need a home.
I felt in my heart for all these characters. It is a wonderful story of family, of following your heart, and realizing family is more than people that are related to you. Thank you to Nan Rossiter and Harper Collins for a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
Let me take just a moment to tell you this: READ THIS NOVEL. It is absolutely breathtaking. This book will make you mad, make you smile and make you cry all while making you want more from this talented author. As someone who is a huge contemporary romance and psychological thriller lover, I don’t read a lot of women’s fiction. But, when I do, I want it to be utterly gripping, mind blowingly poignant, and phenomenally moving. This novel was all of that and more.
I absolutely felt so much for Macey & Ben! I can’t imagine their situation, as I have two beautiful teenage sons of my own, but I felt all their struggle and pain as if it was my own. And, when we are introduced to Harper? Oh my word. My mama side kicked into overdrive instantly, and I wanted to wrap my arms around that little girl! Let’s not forget the sweet soul that is Keeper, the 3 legged pup! He truly stole the show!
Sometimes all it takes is a promise of the heart to make it know that love is all that matters, no matter what. This story had me up long into the night, needing to know what happens to Harper. I rooted for Macey and Ben to be able to overcome their struggles and I absolutely loved seeing Savannah Georgia again, even if it was through the words of the author’s descriptions! This is an incredible novel that you absolutely do not want to miss. Grab it up now! Rossiter has a new fan for life in me!

Que the ugly cries. This story ripped my heart out and put it back together with a newfound perspective on love. Rossiter keeps a steady and accurate pulse on the tensions of life with ease and beauty. The story is sweet, wholesome, and relatable with just a pinch of drama to create a story of resilience, love, and faith. I enjoyed the faith-based undertones and how it is not always easy to gather yourself around the notion that everything will work out just fine. Of course, the addition of the dog, Keeper, highlighted the story for me. He was a sweet companion and symbol of how the furry friends we have are often our most endearing. Harper was such a well-developed character. It is not easy to bring to life a child’s character, but she was a well-done part of the plot. Rossiter has a talent for created subtle moments and tensions, which made the story feel light with meaning. I am thankful I was able to read this story when I did.
Promises of the Heart earns a 4 out of 5 stars.
Excited to review the Savannah Skies first book in this series, PROMISES OF THE HEART by Nan Rossiter.
This installment of the series is about married couple Macey and Ben Samuelson who were childhood sweethearts longing to start a family and fill their Dream Victorian Home in Tybee Island with the sounds of children’s voices. But over the past six years and five miscarriages later their hearts keep getting broken yet their hopes remain. At a pet adoption event they meet a three legged Golden Retriever named Keeper that stole their heart. And as faith would have it, God works in mysterious ways. Their lives intersect and the Samuelsons’ end up opening their hearts and home to Harper, a 9 year old child who had been bounced from foster homes, and in need of a loving home and family.
Rossiter writes with heart that made me fall in love with the beauty of the South – Savannah and the beautiful Tybee Island. She certainly knew how to tug at my heart strings with amazing characters I fell in love with, beautiful pacing and an incredible story that kept me turning those pages. This was an amazing read I enjoyed.
I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
This was such an emotional read!
Macey and Ben really wanted a child.
They adopted Harper.
This is their journey in how they become a family, a real family.
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
A book that I was immersed in very quickly, one that I had to page turn to the end, and then wanted more.
Loved this couple, they show the love they feel for each other in all their actions, and everyone would want a relationship like theirs.
The one heart desire for both of them is a child, and so far, it has been denied, but God works in mysterious ways, and we get to see how, and it will bring tears to your eyes!
What she wants is what she gets? Well, you need to read this one to see how a three-legged dog, a cat and a broken little girl fit into this picture, and add in a huge older home in need of repair.
I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher HarperCollins, and was not required to give a positive review.
