EMMAAfter my brother’s suicide, I’m needing to fill my life with cheap thrills and adrenaline rushes just to make it through each day.I’m trying to exist in a world where there’s no pain because I can’t attach myself to anything or anyone. Not anymore.I’ve learned that attachment leads to loss, and I don’t intend to learn the same lesson twice. My plan seems to be working so far… until Shane … learn the same lesson twice.
My plan seems to be working so far… until Shane starts coming around.
SHANE
I’m out of the Marines now and trying to deal with my best friend’s suicide.
I promised him I’d protect his sister and I’m determined to do just that.
Emma and I share a past history, and that lingering physical attraction could also make this promise difficult to keep.
Her self-destructive behavior reminds me of my best friend, making this all even harder.
When Shane and Emma are forced to work together on a college class project involving relationships and survival, will all of their feelings and behaviors be too much… or will Shane’s promise be kept after all?

Shane is Emma’s brother’s best friend and they both are physically attracted to eachother, there is a promise that Shane had made to his friend that he will protect his sister Emma. Now after his death, Emma’s life and attitude changes all he have to do is take care of her and not letting her in her self destructive path.
The plot is really very difficult and the author Kayley Cole has handled it very carefully, Kudos to the author.

I received an ARC of this book in return for my honest thoughts. I loved this book. It was very realistic and emotional, touching you in every sense. You will experience the good and the bad and the laughter and the tears. I dont know what its like to be a soldier, or to lose someone on the field, but I felt like I did after reading this. I felt that I was along on every journey they went on and experienced. Its a wonderful book about the ups and downs of losing someone, and coping from the bottom up.

Emma has become an adrenaline junkie and doing drugs trying to cope with her brother’s suicide and she blames Shane for him enlisting and going over seas. Shane blames himself for his best friends suicide because he ignored the warning signs not being able to deal with it. His best fried asked him to look out for his sister, so when Shane tries he is met with resistance. This is an emotional read that deals with how they cope and how together they are able to heal. I enjoyed reading this book. It is well written. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. I
A well written smooth flowing quick story that is fast paced and a good storyline for this second chance romance. It includes emotional struggles, drama, danger, chemistry, and steamy hot scenes that had me hooked from the beginning. Shane’s best friend and Emma’s brother committs suicide. Making their journey to cope and overcome obstacles to a HEA a must read.
3.5
Not a bad book, but it took me quite a bit to really get into it. I had problems liking Shane and Emma enough to care what happened to them. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood to read it when I did so I don’t want to be too rough with my review.

Shane and Emma have known each other since they were kids since he was her brothers best friend. After suffering a tragic loss they come back together again. Shane made a promise to Emma’s brother, David, to protect her no matter what and that’s exactly what he tries to do even though Emma is reluctant at first.
Can these two people help each other heal or will they destroy what is left them??
This story has touched my heart in so many ways. I have not lost someone they way these two have but I have lost people that meant the world to me. Thank you Kayley for such a beautiful story. You are truly an amazing author.

Promise to Protect
I know that suicide is a very real problem, especially among our veterans. That being said, this book wasn’t about suicide. It was about the effect that suicide had on the loved ones. This book centered primarily around Emma (sister) and Shane (best friend of David), who took his own life. This book could have been so much more; I never really connected with the characters and was disappointed with the lack of emotion I felt for the deceased. This book could (and should) have made the reader feel. The subject of suicide is highly emotional, and yet, when the story ended, all I felt was ambivalence. The point that the author tried to make was lost in transition to paper.
