I enjoyed this new cast of characters from the world of Jr ward. It was a great storyline with great characters and villians. It’s about Duran who has been held captive and torchered by a evil warlord vampire chalen for over 20 years, but when ahmare brings the head of one of his enemies in trade for her brother who is also being held, she’s sent to bring back chalen’s beloved with the help of duran. Great chemistry and dialogue a great short read.
In this story, we get Ahmare and Duran. Two souls with one goal.
They are not apart of the BDB but their story is amazingly sweet and full of treachery.
The narrator does a fantastic job of telling their story it makes you believe you are there with them. The author still gives a great story with suspense and action in spades.
I very much enjoyed listening to this book and can’t wait for what stories await us.
This is my first book by this author but it won’t be my last! I liked the characters but my one complaint is that the heroine was initially planning to return the hero to his hellish prison. Uh…not cool! I liked the depictions of the cult and the show not tell – which actually got a little annoying because I wanted more info NOW! Great story.
A quick fix for lovers of the BDB world and a great read for anyone who wants some substance to their books.
This book is set in the BDB world but is not about them. Ahmare, whose parents were killed during the Lesser raids, has come to Chalen’s fortress to free her brother, Ahlan who has resorted to dealing and using drugs since their parents deaths and has supposedly cheated Chalen. Chalen, formerly of the Bloodletters camp, changes the rules on Ahmere upon her arrival demanding she retrieve his beloved with the help of another prisoner, Duran, who has been imprisoned and tortured for over two decades.
JR Ward has crafted a story in which Duran that must decide between his decades long desire for revenge, prepared to sacrifice himself or following his heart. She shows the struggle of Ahmare who has to do bad things for noble reasons , following how she makes sense of what she did, why she did it and how do she moves on from there.
If you are a lover of all things BDB, this is a must read. If you are looking for a novel about vampires, this will leave you disappointed because that is not the focus of this story. If you are looking for a well written story that engages your intellect, this will NOT disappoint and I encourage you to read it.
For the BDB fans, I excitedly awaiting Murdhers story too. JR Ward provides a tease at the end of the book.
A read that kept me riveted to my sofa, gripping my iPad in angst while swiping those pages!
I haven’t had the pleasure of reading this author. She basically shook me with a story so realistic, a world of vampires (who knew they have similar problems as us poor humans), it was hard to find a stopping place to continue my own life outside of her deliciously well-built chaotic one. What did I take away of the reading?
1. Life is full of wrong decisions with terrible consequences;
2. Life dishes out bad, not necessarily from our own actions;
3. To survive it takes a bundle of courage, trust, bravery, forgiveness, and love.
Slam! Bam! This author doesn’t pussy-foot around telling this story. She goes directly to the grit, anguish, torture with pure evil having the upper-hand, coiling the reader’s stomach with her choice of words in her unique style of writing. The dialog was superb–crude and in the reader’s face, setting the tone of all its gore.
Ahmare was pretty much a normal vampire until her parents were killed. From that moment she learned to defend herself and to kill if need be. Her younger brother got mixed up in drugs and things really started spiraling out of control until he was nabbed by Chalen, an old vampire who got-off torturing other vampires. Ahmare, with the love for her brother, the only family she has left, negotiates for his release, doing what Chalen asks of her.
As with most evil, one deed is never enough. Chalen demanded more. For her brother, she would do it with the weapon Chalen supplies. A vampire, in captivity for 20 years, who knows where Chalen’s beloved is, but wouldn’t tell Chalen even under massive torture. Can she trust this vampire? Will he kill or hurt her? Life gets worse before it gets better — love prevails. And what a journey!
I was thrilled to discover another author which pushes my buttons, gets my heart racing and has an underlying theme of wisdom in her story.
Ahmare’s brother has been abducted and there is nothing she won’t do to get him back. She doesn’t expect to be paired with a dangerous prisoner and sent out of a treasure hunt, or to start having feelings for him.
I am really enjoying the novellas for this series. Don’t get me wrong, I love the brothers but I am enjoying seeing the world through these new perspectives. Ahmare and Duran’s relationship was quick and intense. Duran is struggling to deal with being a prisoner for years. His focus has always been on revenge but Ahmare brings new feelings out in him.
It took me a little bit to warm up to these two but I did enjoy their story. This novella also wasn’t as emotional as the previous novella, which I kinda missed. Ward is always good with capturing the emotions between characters and pulling on heartstrings, but this one seemed to be missing some of that. Still it was an enjoyable read and a good addition to the series.
4.25 stars–PRISONER OF THE NIGHT by J.R. Ward is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, paranormal, romance story line in the world of the author’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. This is vampires Ahmare and Duran’s story line. PRISONER OF NIGHT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.
NOTE: PRISONER OF NIGHT contains scenes of graphic torture and violence that may not be suitable for all readers.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Ahmar and Duran) PRISONER OF NIGHT follows female vampire Ahmare as she barters for the release of her brother Ahlan, imprisoned by warlord Chalen the Conqueror. Demanding payment and services for her brother’s release Chalen sends Ahmare on two quests: to bring back the severed head of a local drug dealer; and to find and return Chalen’s ‘beloved’. Enter Duran, another vampire prisoner of Chalen the Conqueror, and the man with whom Ahmare will fall in love. What ensues is the journey across country for Ahmare and Duran; the building relationship and love between our leading couple, and the potential fall-out as Duran sets out on a quest of his own to destroy the man that destroyed everyone he loved.
Duran knows where Chalen’s beloved is kept but the journey to freedom brings back too many memories of the past, a past that imprisoned our hero for over twenty –one years enduring torture and abuse at the hands of Chalen the Conqueror. Ahmare is desperate to negotiate her brother’s release but working with Duran finds our heroine falling for a man who is willing to sacrifice himself for the ultimate goal.
PRISONER OF NIGHT focuses on never-before mentioned side-characters of J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood, characters with no connection to the main series but characters whose lives, like the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s, are affected by torture, pain and abuse, with the added benefit of a ‘religious cult’, previously unknown to the Scribe Virgin and Wrath the King.
We are introduced to Ahmare’s long suffering brother Ahlan; Chalen the Conqueror; Duran’s friend Nexi, and Duran’s father Excalduran.
PRISONER OF NIGHT is a tale of survival, dedication, vengeance and love. The premise is heart breaking, emotional and raw; the characters are broken, determined and lost; the romance is passionate and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
I was excited to get lost in the newest addition to the Black Dagger Brotherhood world! I was quickly immersed in Ahmare’s journey and the struggle she faced. She was not prepared for Duran. The chemistry between Ahmare and Duran was off the charts! While they were definitely not expecting each other, their chemistry was undeniable.
While we didn’t see what was happening with the brothers, they were mentioned and I just liked being back in their world. I thought this book was fast paced, well-written and held my attention! Two unlikely forces have to pair up and depend on each other. The journey they took held me captivated. I couldn’t read this book fast enough. I wanted to know what was going to happen and would they survive the odds?! It was a lot of a action with a little of the sassy J.R. Ward style romance. Readers, be prepared not to get anything done and not be able to put this book down. HIGHLY recommend this read!

I’m not a big fan of this kind of books of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The ones that leave the main plot behind and focus on unknown characters and events. Don’t get me wrong, it is actually a good worldbuilding, but in the end they will be forgotten pretty fast. Why stop here if we can take any souvenirs? At least this time the story is fast paced and with a lot of action scenes. Some bloody situations starred by Duran, so if you are a bit squirmish about that kind of stuff I guess you should skip this. You won’t miss anything important.
This short book adds several new concepts to the Brotherhood universe that would have been great to explore with more detail. For example, Chalen the conqueror seems like a good baddie that could have been the headache of many stories, instead of just the short lived foe in this one. Also, the Davhos cult was something different that we had never read before in this saga and, again, it is a shame that it is not going to have more weight in future books. Or any weeght at all. Ward is a good writer, but she doesn’t take many risks in her worldbuilding; so a religious zealot with a god complex could have been the whetstone that the dagger starts to need. Another time, I guess…
In such a fast and short story is hard to form an opnion about the characters. I like Ahmare. She is not a complex character, but has a really good balance between strength, compassion and humor (something a bit uncommon in the female cast of this saga). Duran had way too many layers to be explored in fairness, but what we get to see is interesting. Maybe a bit too brutal, but that is understandable. There is something I don’t like in this story involving Duran, though: he needs pain to end his perfomance during the naughty moments. That’s not bad. What is bad is the way that issue is resolved. One moment he had that problem, the next all is OK. I didn’t undertand that change. I guess there wasn’t enough time to foge a proper development.
First, as is OBVIOUSLY a BDB WORLD book and NOT a BDB series book, you should ignore one star reviews from people who don’t understand how to properly read titles and blurbs. It’s their screw up, no reason to rate a book badly for it. If someone doesn’t like the book as it stands separately, that’s definitely valid.
This book is excellently written and focused solely on one plot-line (instead of a zillion like BDB books usually do), which is awesome. By itself, the book stands alone and is excellent. A little too short to have enough romantic bonding I’m used to from this author, but still excellent.
I do prefer the BDB books (most of them, anyway), to BDB World books, but it was a taste of a world I love.
An interesting addition to the series.
One of my favorite authors and one of my favorite worlds. She does a fabulous job fleshing out the world and the characters who inhabit it.
I loved this book! I have read this series it is so good!
As always I am left wanting more! The Warden continues to expand a world that we as readers of her books love. I was brought to tears and laughter, I cringed and hurt alongside our hero and heroine.
As always, a great read by a beloved author!
I really liked this book. Great characters
This is another author that is great.
Once again I found myself pulled into the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Greatly enjoyed.
Not my favorite BDB book but any fan will enjoy the quick read!
A “should read” if you’ve read all the Black Dagger books
