Accused of murder. Locked up with dangerous Fae criminals and dangerously attractive prison guards. But I’m totally innocent—I know it.
My name’s Emerald Jones, and I’d been living a pretty charmed life for a Fae girl—literally. A year ago I left the Invisible Cities of the Fae Realm for a luxe existence in the human city of Los Angeles, with my bestie April at my side. Our parties were … were legendary and our life was totally sweet.
Then, at the stroke of midnight on my eighteenth birthday, everything went black. And when I woke up, April was dead.
Next thing I know I’m on trial and booked into Enchanted Penitentiary, where only the most dangerous Fae are sent to keep them out of our society. I know I’m innocent, but I can’t prove it until I find the killer.
Which might be easier said than done when it turns out my childhood friend Gage is the one acting as my personal prison guard. And he’s gotten pretty hot.
Or that the disgraced—and incredibly sexy—Prince of Fae is locked up here too—and won’t let me out of his sight.
Add to the mix some sweet-but-psycho fellow prisoners and the mysterious, all-powerful Warden, and I’m going to be lucky if I make it out alive.
Or make it out at all.
Prisoner of Fae is a new adult paranormal prison novel with a slow-burn romance and a kickass heroine. Although there are love triangles, this is NOT a reverse harem. Rated 18+ for strong language.

“Prisoner of Fae”, the first book in the “Enchanted Penitentiary” series is an intensely suspenseful tale that sets the tone for the series. Emerald a snarky 16-year old Fae and her bestie April escape the Fae world to live in the human world, are having the time of their life until Emerald wakes up after her birthday party to find her best friend dead. Emerald finds herself convicted of her murder and sentenced to prison. Emerald needs to find out who murdered April, but how when she’s in prison? This tale is full of intrigue, suspense, danger, and nail-biting action that will keep you invested in this tale long after you have finished the book. Recommended.

Emerald and April left the Fae lands to live and experience life in the human world. They were BFFs and lived together in a plush house. At her 18th birthday party, it was all going great, when suddenly she awoke to being arrested for killing April. She had no recollections of what occurred prior to the countdown of April going to bring her, her present. At jail, she runs into a guard she grew up with, Gage. He gave her preferential treatment. She made a friend of sorts, Delilah and the crown prince, Tarian. Many things transpired during her first weeks. Most of all, the three of them tried to escape and she found out who the warden actually is. They are now in solitary confinement and she finally remembers most of what happened that night…is she innocent or guilty? Is the real killer still loose? Where is Gage? I received this as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.
An excellent start to this series. The author did a great job with building this world with her great story line and amazing characters. Emerald is thrown into the Enchanted Penitentiary for killing her best friend April, and there she runs into an old friend and crush, Gage. Unfortunately, she gets mixed up with the handsome Prince Tarian and crazy inmate Delilah which leads to one grand catastrophe. This magical tale with its feisty, crazed, vindictive characters was an enjoyable well-written story that is definitely worth giving a read and I look forward to reading the next installment.
Paranormal prison romance with zing!
…and not in the zappy-magicy sort of way, as there’s not a lot of magic at all in Fae-jail. I mean in the snappy heroine and her sizzling suitors sort of way. The “ooh, hawt guys!” romance isn’t usually my kinda thing, but hats off to when one’s not the same-old enemies-to-lovers schtick. It’s also a paranormal mystery, though not the hard-bitten PI or useless girl playing dress up as one type. Think paranormal chick-lit; a cozy, slow-burn sort of read.
It’s a light-weight read when it comes to world-building and side characters, but it’s an engaging one none the less. I loved the easy writing style, and that for once while I thought our narrator could be a bit ditzy she didn’t irritate me by doing stupid stuff all the time. Not gonna lie: I’m the kind of reader who eye-rolls romance tropes so there was a fair bit of it going on when shirtless guys and jealous outbursts occurred. However, I appreciated so much that the tropes weren’t executed cookie-cutter style – I genuinely hadn’t seen them done with emotional intelligence and self-reflection that wasn’t just blandly stated “attraction” (or without needless rage-fests to create “tension”). As light as the side characters are, I loved Dahlia. Harley Quinn with magic? Oh yes. I think we need more of her.
Honestly, it was the mystery aspect that had me intrigued. It’s teased out unreliable-narrator-style as Emerald remembers bits and pieces as well as filling in some of the backstory. By the end I was really curious as to why all this was happening, and that’s before we get to the mystery within the prison itself. The ending felt like a natural cut off point rather than one of those cruel mid-scenes ones; think TV drama episode or story arc.
While I wasn’t sure at first, I ended up enjoying the mystery side of things. A nice easy read for anyone who loves a small bite of paranormal romance to sate their cravings without getting bogged down in details.
