Gaming hell? Yes. Gorgeous owner of said gaming hell? Yes. Woman who wants to stand on her own and be what she wants to be? Yes. Enough said. I knew this story would be great based on Duncan’s appearance in the last book and it was fantastic. The story is so lovely and edge of your seat – will their differences in social standing work, will the villain see justice, why can’t I stop reading the story? Another wonderful story from Ms. Scott.
I love finding a new-to-me author whose stories I want to devour.
I discovered Scarlett Scott through book 2 of Sins and Scoundrels and immediately bought and read book 3 (a rare course of action for me). While it’s nice to read a series in order, the books in this series can be read out of order and still make sense.
The hero is such an anti-hero in the eyes of Society. Duncan Kirkwood is the wealthy self-made owner of the notorious gaming hell, The Duke’s Bastard, which is precisely what Duncan is. Bent on revenge for his mother’s death in the rookeries, he is delighted when Lady Frederica, disguised as her brother, invades his club, accidentally providing him with the means to achieve his goal. But the best laid plans never allowed for falling in love with a bluestocking authoress with a lively curiosity for the inner workings of his club.
I thoroughly enjoyed Duncan and Frederica’s story, and recommend it, particularly if you enjoy your Regency with a bit of steam and a non-aristocratic hero.
London, 1812 “He noticed the fellow’s arse first.” Duncan Kirkwood could only stare as the “gentleman” in his exclusive gaming club bent over. But of course he eventually figured out it was a girl dressed as a man and it happened to be Lady Frederica Isling, daughter of a duke. What was she doing in The Duke’s Bastard? She was doing research for her book, that’s what! Of course he could see below her garb she was a lady and it eventually came out who she was, that is after she was exposed to some rather risque’ entertainment!
A volatile attraction seemed to ignite between the two, but Freddy is an innocent. She had no idea she may be the key to Duncan’s revenge plot against his real father. The man who ignores him and caused his mother’s death. He didn’t name his club the Duke’s Bastard for nothing!
What starts out as a chance encounter (ok Freddy had been determined to get into the club) began to change into something else. Scarlett Scott always pulls me into the story and this one tugged at the emotions. Duncan was a very strong, determined man and had pulled himself up from nothing. Freddy only wanted to write stories and not marry the man her parents insisted on.
Sizzling heat, a few twists and even humor at times make this an amazing story not to be missed!! Cannot wait for the next in this series!!
Lady Frederica, daughter of a duke, disguises herself as her brother to enter a gambling den to see the atmosphere because she’s writing a novel about an inveterate gambler. Initially, her intent is to finish her novel before her father is able to force her into an unwanted marriage.
But then Frederica meets the gambling den owner, Duncan Kirkwood, bastard son of a duke. He is like no other man she’s ever seen. Their sizzling attraction leads her down the merry path to ruin, but it is a compromise that Frederica hopes will gain her what she wants. But will it? Can it save her from a future of extreme unhappiness?
This is a really good romance novel that radiates heat between the two main characters and has a few unexpected twists as well.
I recommend reading it near a fan, with a glass of ice water close by….
Duncan Kirkwood, handsome and mysterious, is the owner of the most exclusive, wicked gaming club in London. His club serves only the best client- tell; even the King. He has founded his empire with the main reason to bring justice to the man that sired him, made him a bastard and let his mother die a horrible death. Lady Frederica is a budding novelist, trying to conduct research for her manuscript; dons her brothers clothing and slip into his club to get her research. However, her disguise does not keep her hidden from Duncan for long, as he is curious about the person trying to hide their person. He wants to know who is trying to spy on his club and Frederica finds herself being drawn into the charms of one Duncan Kirkwood. What an interesting read this turns out to be. Scarlett has provided an in-depth look into the gaming clubs and a budding romance that should not happen.
Duncan Kirkwood is the bastard son of a Duke. His blood father has never acknowledged him. He has managed to make himself very influential amongst the wealthy members of society, thanks to his club. “The Duke’s Bastard” is where all sorts of pleasures can be had. Soon vengeance for the death of his mother will be within his grasp.
Lady Frederica Isling does not want to marry the man her father has chosen for her, she wants to write a novel. Stories are always in her head, but she needs to do some research to make it believable. Gambling clubs are not the place a young woman can go on her own, so some deception is needed.
Our heroine is an adventurous young lady who wants a very different life to the one her parents insist on. Our hero is a strong man who has dragged himself out of the gutter through sheer hard work and intelligence.
This historical romance is a lot of sexy fun. The characters are very easy to love, and the story line is very believable.
It is part of a series but each book can be read on it’s own.
A very enjoyable read.
Duncan the gorgeous rake and owner of a famous gaming hell spies the lovely and daring Lady Frederica in his club dressed, and poorly dressed as a man! And that is the beginning of an adventurous sexy and as always, well written storyline!!!
Loved it!

Frederica is feisty and not afraid to speak her mind. I enjoyed the banter between Duncan and Frederica. This historical romance is different than most. I loved it.
Revenge, passion and suspense make for a book I couldn’t put down!
mills and Boone meets seamy.
Loved the emotions in this story. Love and hate are separated by a thin line in this book. I very much enjoyed the characters and the plot of this engaging story!
Before I got to 25% of book, I was already skimming this tired story. No movement. It was billed as bastard seeking revenge, but this still has not been addressed before I quit out of boredom at around 1/3 of book. A stinker.
Another brilliant story to continue the series
This is another brilliantly written story that continues a great series. This is a very erotic plot that is beautifully descriptive. The characters are wonderfully crafted, and have the courage and determination to resist social expectations, to achieve their dreams.
This is the story of Duncan and Frederica. Duncan is the owner of an infamous gaming club. He is driven by revenge. Duncan is flawed and his reputation is infamous, but he holds an inner drive that is innately good. He is an enigma, bent on revenge yet capable of extreme kindness. He is complex and captivating. Frederica is a wallflower with the love of writing. Her drive for her story continually gets her in trouble. She lives through the lives of her characters. She is strong willed and brave. Quite a match for Duncan!
The interaction between them was passionate and mesmerizing. The characters were strongly written. I loved that Frederica was an author. It gave her depth and likability. The plot was intriguing, and fast paced. The interplay between the characters kept you interested. I liked that there was a section of the book that shed light on what it was like being an unwedded lady in that era. She was at the mercy of her father and then her husband with no regards to her wants and needs. It gave a similarity to Duncan and his revenge in a sense, both slaves to something beyond their control.
I loved this book. Ms. Scott is a favorite author of mine and this book did not disappoint. I was caught in it on the first page. It was a wonderful, steamy love story. I liked it better than the first book in the series, Duke Of Depravity. I look forward to the next book. I would recommend it to anyone who loves historical romance.
This book was smut from the first chapter on. I stopped reading after the 3rd chapter. I like romance but this was not what I could continue reading. Again, not romantic just plain smut!
Wow!
What do you do if you are born on the wrong side of the blanket? Why, you rise up above it and take out anyone in your way!
That is what Duncan does. I loved that he didn’t just sit back complaining – he did something about it and when he became successful, that was when Frederica virtually dropped into his lap.
What an amazing story this was. I very soon found that the two main characters had grown on me and their story was just ‘Wow’!
Definitely worth reading!
This is a fun read, it drew me into the story right away with its charming characters and a plot that gets nicely tangled before the resolution takes place.
too much sex
It was an easy ready. Enjoyed it very much.
