Often tedious, it’s a story of H/h who have the hots for each other, and really nothing else. She’s conducting research to make her novel believable; said research involves obtaining first hand knowledge of a gaming hell. He owns the hell. He’s also seeking revenge against his father, and she’s the means to that end. It’s a standard disaster in the making, standard remorse, standard terrible ton families, and 17 exclamations invoking Beelzebub, his breeches, banyan, ballocks, bottom, blood and brimstone. That was too much, and the story just wasn’t enough.
Clever theme with strong, fearless heroine doing the unexpected.
Plan to be entertained and perhaps a bit shocked!
Great story! Loved Duncan and Frederica.
The second book centers around Duncan Kirkwood (introduced in book one as Crispin’s friend). He is the unacknowledged son of the Duke of Amberly, who callously abandoned his country girl mother to fend for herself when she was carrying his baby. Forced into a life of prostitution to feed her son, a young Duncan finds her dead at the hands of another. He swore he would get revenge for her death. Now the owner of the most exclusive gaming hell in London, catering to society’s gambling and depraved pleasures. Soon his goal will be within his grasp – the financial ruin of his father. Enter Lady Frederica Isling, only daughter of the Duke of Westlake. At 22, she is determined to become a writer of a novel and disguises herself as a man to enter into Duncan’s gaming hell for research. He spots her immediately but has never encountered such an intelligent, innocent, determined, witty and beautiful lady. Trying to be honorable but unable to stop his fascination with Freddy, Duncan permits her to come back. Freddy is almost engaged to the Duke of Amberly’s son, Earl of Willingham, Duncan’s half-brother. He is a depraved peer, delighting in causing pain to those weaker. Freddy decides life as a spinster is better than one as his Countess. She puts her plan into place – but all that can go wrong does. And then the unthinkable happens – she falls in love with Duncan – handsome, rich, kind, intelligent – someone who will allow her freedom to pursue her dream of writing. But Duncan, in spite of his attraction to her, must meet out his vengeance first for his mother, and uses Freddy to accomplish his life long goal. Except he realizes nothing has changed – his mother is still dead and he has hurt the bright joy in his life. How it is all resolved is an enchanting story!!
I enjoyed this book & felt that Scarlett Scott handled a dark, sinful gaming hell nicely by having a honorable owner. Duncan Kirkwood owns The Duke’s Bastard gaming hell & named that way because that was what he was. His father, the Duke of Amberley took Duncan’s country mother as a mistress & when she became pregnant he threw her to the London streets, where she was murdered when Duncan was 9. Duncan had be a thief, pick pocket etc growing up alone on the streets but now owns the gaming hell, has amassed a large amount of money & respect/fears from his clients. Lady Frederica Isling is the daughter of a Duke & all she wants to do is write her book, The Silent Baron but she needs to further her research & feels The Duke’s Bastard would be perfect, because it was the which is the most fashionable & notorious in London.
The adventures for the two of them starts here with disguises, lies, revenge, danger, lust, love, trust, blackmail & a great couple with a very sexy hero! I highly recommend this book & the whole series!

This is another beautiful, romantic and suspensefilled hea book, a Must read!
Duncan Kirkwood is the illegitimate son of a man whom he blames for the death of his mother. He has pulled himself up from the dregs of London to the owner of a very successful and wicked gaming club. Lady Frederica has disguised herself as her brother so that she can venture into the world she is writing her novel about and falls into the hands of Duncan. When Duncan finds out who she is all his planning is coming into fruition. This was quite to story. I found myself very intrigued when I started reading it. I was routing that Frederica would change Duncan’s mind in his vengeance. I was surprised to say the least! There are some twists and turns and things I did not expect. Very enjoyable read, definitely recommend!
Is it because it was a revenge book that I needed more time to read it?
Revenge is with triangle love one of my least favorite trope, both deal with secrets that only bring pain and heartache.
I do liked the first part when Frederica and Duncan get to know each other, their interactions, how they play their game of cat and mouse but always respecting the other.
But even they keep secrets from another, each one planning to use the other for its own benefit.
Once the betrayal was revealed, the story takes an other turn, they begin to realize they care more than the usual for another but also the masks of the people around them fall, and it is not very pretty to see what lay behind.
I liked both main characters, sure Frederica is very naive as was alas the sheltered women in these times, but she has a goal, one outside her rank and perfectly unsuitable for a lady but she does not deter and tries to reach it. She makes mistakes but will stay on her path.
Duncan raised himself from the gutters, building his own wealth and name but inside himself, a little boy won’t find peace until he get revenge for his mother’s treatment and death. Alas his ire against a special peer and his encounter with Lady Frederica Isling do not mix well.
At a time, he will have to make a choice, but will she be willing to give him a chance too?
I was glad it was not a too angsty read, the main problems were misconceptions and miscommunication. From the beginning, they are well for one another, each understanding the other. They will just need to see their feelings for the other endangered to get the right decisions.
A 4,5 stars rate.
