“I even ate this morning. My mother would be so proud of me. She’d be mad at you, though.”“For bringing you into a police investigation? I’m pissed at myself about that too.”“No. For wearing the same shirt two days in a row. What are you, a savage?”Derek glanced down at the white button-up. “I have fifteen of these things. What makes you think it’s the same as yesterday?”Sam twisted to a stop in … yesterday?”
Sam twisted to a stop in front of him, and before he could stop her, she rested three of her fingers at the bottom of his ribcage. “Coffee stain.” She looked up and her eyes met his. “You should be more careful about that.”
Derek wrapped his fingers around hers as he removed her hand from his side, holding it tight as he said, “I’ve been a bit preoccupied. Must’ve grabbed a dirty shirt on accident.”
“This is why you need me. Someone to watch your back. Don’t detectives normally have partners or something?”
“The partners I’ve had in the past weren’t in charge of making sure I was dressed to code.”
“Then you need a girlfriend.”
Derek dropped her hand and moved past her to open the door to the building. “If that’s your way of hitting on me, I’m not interested.”
“Excuse me?” Sam walked through the door and followed his lead as he went to the elevator.
“Touching counts as flirting. We’re not doing that. Got it?”
“Good grief, I wasn’t flirting. I’m just more hands-on than you.”
Derek glanced over at her even as he clenched and unclenched the hand that had just touched hers. She had been throwing him off his game from the second she’d first caught him outside their building, and he wasn’t any closer to getting his equilibrium back.

Magic always comes back… Always.
Samantha Harris walked away from her family, and magic, years ago. But when a string of murders rocks New York City, Sam can’t help but notice that the placement of the bodies screams magic. Except no one in her family seems to pick up the connection.
When she tries to give the lead detective a quick hint to send him in the right direction, Sam gets sucked further into the investigation than she ever thought possible. Now Detective Derek Pierce has to put together the half truths Sam is giving him and the facts of the case that get stranger by the second.
The killer is closer to Sam than she could’ve imagined and Derek is the only one who can stop him from tearing her family apart, but only if he knows the whole truth. And the whole truth is exactly what could kill him.

First we meet a young witch who is trying to “kick the magic” habit. She isn’t doing so well. She has a neighbor who is a dective. There is an event that brings them together to find the bad guy. The big problem is the difference between the magic world and the non-magic world. If the criminal is from the magic world, then the witches will have to deal with it. Of course, if the magic criminal is known by the non-magic detective questions arise and can be problematic.
Sex is a part of the story, but pages are not used to describe the event.
I’m also not telling why our young witch is trying to be non magical.
I will tell you that there is an attraction between the non-magic detective and the young witch, and that is a problem.
Y’all enjoy
All of the characters and plot are interesting although the author drags on some what. But most offensively the author Spends a lot of time fantasizing sex And then spends an entire chapter on XXX pornography.
I wish bookbub would tag these books that those of us that want to read sword and sorcery and fantasy books could avoid pornography
Tough chicks and a dude to match. I enjoyed the first of of these so much I went and bought the others. I usually don’t do that. Thanks!
This book read pretty well until the sleaze near the end.
A Magical Start To This Series, A 5 Star Read
(Read using Kindle Unlimited)
This is an intriguing & kinda creepy, in a good way , read. It’s about a Homicide Detective, Derek & a Witch, Sam, that cross paths, initially, due to living in the same building, She’s crushing on his sexy self hard, whilst he thinks she’s just a junkie pot head. He doesn’t know anything about witchcraft, ‘The Families’ or the fact that she is going through withdrawals from magic!!!
They end up helping each other on a case & their slow burn romance begins, but once they do ignite they are on fire!! Unfortunately it’s also the start of their involvement in some of the darkest magic Sam has ever seen!! Sam’s Mother wants him controlled or his memories wiped, her sister just wants him & Sam is determined to help & protect him no matter the cost to herself!! Then Claudia becomes involved, Her Grandmother, the most powerful witch alive, and she wants him dead!!
The writing in this book is on point, the characters & world building have set up this series so well. The storyline is captivating & I love the melding of to two genres – magic & a procedural, it’s really clever. I 100% recommend it. I can’t wait to start the next book!!

I liked this story and loved the eBook cover!
Both Sam and Derek were good main characters that drew me in.
This book was a bit different than some of the others that I have read. I liked that Sam was different because she tried to walk away from magic and it cost her big time. I liked how the author came at that from a different angle than I’ve read before. Add to that when she had tried magic it often screwed things up royally.
Derek was a tired, overworked detective but he still was a good guy through and through. The first few meetings between Sam and Derek were interesting to say the least. They also got even MORE interesting as time went on.
Sam’s family members were definitely something else and not always something good. Well, usually not good for anyone who tried to cross the witch families.
There is plenty of action and dangers in the story also some romance and hot attraction too.
So questions are but some remain. This book goes have an unexpected ending although I’m not sure that’s the right word to use. It leaves the reader at a cliffhanger of sorts. You get to decide if it’s enough for you or if you want to read on into the series. I think that I want to read on in the next book.
“I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
Samantha Harris is a witch who’s sworn off magic until a series of murders with magical connections have thrown her into the path of hot homicide detective Derek Pierce. He doesn’t believe in the supernatural but Sam makes him question everything he’s ever believed and before he knows it he is caught up in the world of old and powerful magical families that will stop at nothing, not even murder, to protect their secrets.
Great writing, strong characters, and an exciting storyline had me riveted to my seat. This story had me from the first page and I didn’t quit until I hit the end of the book, and even though nothing is resolved, I loved it. Sadly, Derek and Sam are farther apart than ever, but their story isn’t over. This book has a taste of romance and I can only hope it heats up even more in book two because these two characters are meant to be together! This book is a great read.
