A long-buried secret emerges from the ruins of End House… her friends. Surrounded by vampires and hybrids—human vampires, Linda finds solace in her bookstore. Then one morning, the lights go out and an explosion rocks her shop and any future dreams for a happy ending.
Have The Dead and Wolf returned to exact their revenge on Oasis?
Linda and her close friends—Shana, David, and Louise—race to where lightning converges on an isolated spot behind the town. A sinkhole replaces End House’s former site. Around the hole stand The Watchers—the vampire police, the group of five hybrids, and The Elders—the local vampire leaders. Echoing from inside the dark pit are the voices of Father John, the vampire hunter, and Abe, the head Watcher. Trapped with them in the tunnels below Oasis is the magical door that controls time.
From this moment, Linda and Shana become embroiled in the twisted escapades of Todd, Sheriff Sam, and The Elders as they search for The Dead at an exclusive club in Disney World. Death and mayhem follow their every step. A masquerade ball and a romp through the tunnels lead to a showdown in the swamps of southern Florida.
Can Linda choose between Gregg and Todd—the two hybrids who compete for her heart and are at war on opposing sides? Will she find her happy ending?
Will Oasis survive the battle between good and evil?

Prey for the Dead by Susanne Leist takes place in a charming little Florida town called Oasis, where all the men are handsome and the women are beautiful. They are also a strange mix of vampire, human, and hybrid. This was a great mix of old vampire lore, new fantasy, and basic human emotion. Great world building with lots of twists and turns!
This is the second YA Book in the series beginning five years later. Linda and Shana had enjoyed peaceful lives in Oasis, after a showdown with vampires, until everything changed. They were thrust in the middle of a battle that took them to an exclusive club in Disneyworld. The girls played the wives of Todd and Sam, but Linda was in a love triangle, with hybrid vampires on opposite sides. I loved being taken to Disneyworld in the story, even though they were surrounded by danger. Linda’s heart was taking her in two directions. Like Linda, I couldn’t decide who she should be with—if either of them. There are beautiful descriptions of the landscape giving a strong atmosphere and plenty of action that kept me reading. I was satisfied with Linda’s ending, but I hope there is more about Shana. If you like vampires, a love triangle, mystery, and deception, you’ll enjoy this story. This can be a stand-alone, but I recommend reading the first book.
“Paradise has a way of slipping through out fingers,” Susan Leist writes near the end of this book, after she has proven it throughout. I thought this was even better than her first vampire novel, The Dead Game. Prey for the Dead took me five years into the future where Linda still runs her bookstore in Oasis. She learns to live among among vampires and vampire hybrids but that doesn’t stop the good vs. evil battle from raging its ugly head from Disney World to tunnels. As with the first book, this has a really sweet touch of romance. The descriptions are terrific, the characters solid. Can’t wait for the next one.
“Prey for the Dead” continues five years after “The Dead Game”. All Linda wanted was love, contentment, and happiness. She left the Big Apple in search of a better way of life. But joy crossing paths with her wasn’t in the cards, due to a wicked gang of vampires that wreak havoc on her life. She seems to never have any serenity. Linda takes comfort in her bookstore. She has to learn to live among vampires. She wasn’t expecting the devastation of a loud blast to hit her store. There’s chaos among the hybrids and vampires, and they end up running for cover. Demise and turmoil shadow them, and they end with a head-to-head in the marshes of Florida. A boundless tale of combat between good and evil. Florida shores are stunningly depicted. An exciting journey. The writing smooth and the story captivating suggests an author who loves her craft.
I read the first book in the series a few years ago and thought it was dynamite.
Susanne does not ease her foot off the gas pedal for this high octane sequel. Placing the vampires in Florida and Disneyworld was a nice touch. The story moves fast with slick action and sharp interaction between the characters, replete with romantic interludes.
“Prey for the Dead” picks up the story five years later. After a period of peace in Oasis between humans, hybrids and vampires, war breaks out again. Susanne has a knack for telling a captivating story that mixes together fantasy and the supernatural.
My memories of vampires date back to Bela Lugosi holding a cape in front of his mouth, and his piercing eyes hypnotically captivating his female prey, as in the classic “Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein.”
Thankfully, today’s vampires are equipped with a more profuse personality and power.
This is the second volume of The Dead Game series.
Susanne Leist has crafted a great setting, the world building is well detailed and never boring. As for the story, it was fast paced with lots of action and great dialogues.
Romance, adventure, thriller… there’s a bit of everything here.
It is a story of vampires, at first I was a bit hard to get used to the fact that in this book these creatures are not that similar to the general idea of a vampire that Bram Stoker stuck in our heads. But then, once you accept that fantastic creatures can be approached in as many different ways as one wants it works fine.
A Most Original Vampire Story!!
I love vampire books and have read a lot of them. Susanne Leist takes this vampire story in a completely different direction. Even though this could be a stand alone you really should read Book 1, The Dead Game so you are up with the whole story. Both books take place in the town of Oasis in Florida. From the outside it seems to be an idealistic place to live. It appears to be named appropriately. The twists and turns between the humans, the vampires, good and bad, and the part human part vampires will take you on the ride of your life. It totally had me turning pages as fast as I could read them. On the edge of my seat literally talking to myself when something out of nowhere happens. This is truly a five star read as is Book 1. I’m sure you will enjoy them as much as I did. The world that Susanne Leist has created and the characters are all very tight and seem real. You can picture your self living in such a town. I can’t say enough about how good this story really is. I’m sure any vampire lover will truly enjoy both books and hopefully the third.
I read The Dead Game by Susanne Leist back in 2016 (see my review here) Although this can be read as a stand alone I highly suggest you read the first in this series–you will somewhat need the background to understand how it all came about!
Oasis is over run by Vampires, hybrid vampires and of course there are also humans who haven’t a clue. One group of Vampires is trying to kill off the other group and I was hard put to figure out who was truly trying to protect the town and who wasn’t. Talk about twists and turns–this novel has MANY.
Then you have two human females who actually do know what is going on–and one of them is being romantically pursued by 2 of the hybrid vampires. She really likes them both–but does she really want to get into a relationship with any kind of vsmpire?
Lots of action which will keep you wondering and reading until you have finished the book!
Exciting Saga!
‘Prey for the Dead,’ continues the with the adventures of the characters from book one as they endeavor to have a normal life. In true Twilight meets Dracula, this next book keeps you engaged! Filled with unexpected turns and chilling events as everyone, normal and of the paranormal; try to coexist. There is plenty of romance to keep the story from being too heavy. I liked that the story line was not just a series of fights and slayings. Now that the characters are familiar,
I enjoyed watching them develop in a deeper sense. Author, Susanne Leist, has created a fascinating world of people, vampires, and hybrids. A world that will stretch your imagination to the fullest. This is a series everyone would enjoy.
