From USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author L.J. Shen comes an intense, high school enemies-to-lovers romance with a twist.
Penn
They say revenge is a dish best served cold.
I’d had four years to stew on what Daria Followhill did to me, and now my heart was completely iced.
I took her first kiss.
She took the only thing I loved.
I was poor.
She was rich.
The good thing about circumstances? They can change. Fast.
Now, I’m her parents’ latest shiny project.
Her housemate. Her tormentor. The captain of the rival football team she hates so much.
Yeah, baby girl, say it—I’m your foster brother.
There’s a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and she’s about to shell out some serious tears.
Daria Followhill thinks she is THE queen. I’m about to prove to her that she’s nothing but a spoiled princess.
Daria
Everyone loves a good old unapologetic punk.
But being a bitch? Oh, you get slammed for every snarky comment, cynical eye roll, and foot you put in your adversaries’ way.
The thing about stiletto heels is that they make a hell of a dent when you walk all over the people who try to hurt you.
In Penn Scully’s case, I pierced his heart until he bled out, then left it in a trash can on a bright summer day.
Four years ago, he asked me to save all my firsts for him.
Now he lives across the hall, and I want nothing more than to be his last everything.
His parting words when he gave me his heart were that nothing in this world is free.
Now? Now he is making me pay.

Holy moly, I love this book!!!
It’s full of powerful and well rounded characters, with plenty of drama and agust. But what I liked most was that it felt so real. I imagine a lot of homes in this country have a similar problem, with less money of course, the lack of communication can really hurt people.
I can’t wait for more from Ms.Shen, whom talent knows no bounds.
4.5 stars
Like all of LJ Shen’s books, Pretty Reckless absolutely consumed me. Once I started, I didn’t want to put it down. I was so excited to be back in Todos Santos and meeting the next generation of Hotholes (also known as Totholes). The players may have changed, but All Saints High has not and there was drama and angst galore in this one. This is a spin off of the Sinners of Saint series, but can be enjoyed as a standalone. I definitely recommend reading it though since this series will focus on the children from the Sinners series and characters from those books will appear.
One of the things that always amazes me about LJ Shen’s writing is that she can take a pretty awful and terrible person and make you sympathize and maybe even fall in love with them. Penn and Daria are perfect examples. They are not especially nice people and are often unapologetically mean, arrogant, selfish, jealous, and angry teens. As we dive deeper into their pasts and present, however, a much different picture starts to form. The reader may not agree or like the choices our characters make out of pain or desperation, but it’s understandable and relatable. I think the theme of being real and truly seen is such a powerful one in this book and I appreciated that the author tackled these tumultuous adolescent times so accurately. Another thing I really enjoyed was that each chapter started with a poem that set the tone for what was to come. In true LJ Shen fashion, there are some great twists and turns in the book that will have you crying one minute and cheering the next. I did feel that one of the major conflicts in the story was solved a little too easily/conveniently, but overall, I loved how the author was able to bring everything full circle.
Seeing the original Hotholes again was the icing on the cake and it’s so great being back in this world. I did lose a little love for Mel, but she worked to make up for it in the end, and Jamie was such a wonderful dad. Shen really let him shine in this book and it made me so happy since we never got to know him as well as the other Hotholes since his book, Defy is just a novella. This was an amazing start to the series and I’m excited to find out more about mysterious Vaughn, ethereal Luna, and larger than life Knight. The direction the future books will take is hinted at the end, but I still can’t wait to see how it all plays out, especially for baby Vicious.
Another fabulous read by LJ Shen, this is the first book in her new All Saints High series, a NA emotional, angsty, enemies-to-lovers read that will blow your world to smithereens!! Full of twists and turns it’s a beautiful and powerful story, it will leave you addicted, obsessed and begging for more!!
Daria is the rich girl with everything, little miss popular, cheerleading queen, she has it all and isn’t shy about rubbing it in your face. Money isn’t everything though, she has some real problems underneath that fake facade, a jealous anger that takes over and has her mouth sprouting words before her brain is in gear, and these outbursts always have a consequence.
Penn Scully is her complete opposite, from the poor side of town. He stole her first kiss a long time ago and have her his most prized possession, then did something reckless which changed their worlds. Now they’re in High School and their hatred for each other knows no bounds. But things take a different turn when Daria’s parents move Penn into their house to live, and they end up spending much more time together.
Such a rollercoaster of a read, so much angst and stress I didn’t know which way to turn!! But this couple are everything – their passion and chemistry just sizzle! So much drama happening in here, some of the stuff is just downright jaw dropping mean, some will leave you gasping for air, others in tears…. so many feels!! Its raw and moving and has some important life lessons in here around family love and loyalty. I loved it, unputdownable from start to finish, you won’t regret reading this one!
There are no words that begin to describe the magnitude of this magnificent story. Leigh has so beautifully and brilliantly orchestrated an epic story of firsts. This is a page turner with such chemistry and heart that I could not put it down. Daria is the perfect spoiled little rich girl who has everything a family that loves her, friends, captain of the cheer squad, car, goes to the best school, money and all the privileges money can buy yet she is jealous of Via another student who is a better ballerina than she that attends her mothers dance school. Via has her own secrets and is jealous of Daria. One day outside the dance studio a jealous fourteen year old Dara’s meets Penn Via’s twin. Penn is taken with Daria at first sight that he watches her from afar as he waits for his twin Daria. They meet when Daria is running away from the studio blinded by jealousy because her mother is spending her time developing Via to be a true ballerina. Daria has fisted in her hand; Via’s future an acceptance letter for the Royal Ballet Academy. Penn sees a letter clutched in Daria’s hand which is causing Daria pain so he takes it from her and rips it into pieces not knowing its significance. Penn proceeds to give Daria her first kiss , a piece of sea glass and a promise to take all of her firsts. Via comes out of the studio to meet her twin Penn and is jealous because Daria has Penn’s attention . Later that evening Via has a run in with their father and runs away never knowing she has been accepted to the Academy. Penn is devastated that Via has ran away and vows revenge. Penn learns of Via’s acceptance and blames Daria for Via’s disappearance. Four years later these two are forced to live under the same roof when Daria’s parents foster Penn. This is their story as two broken souls are plagued with regret, hate, hurt, jealousy and revenge. This story will pull every single heartstring as you live the heartbreak and the healing as the family learns to love each other again. A fantastic five star plus plus read you won’t soon forget. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Oh, my gosh. I absolutely love Leigh’s writing, her Sinners of Saint series is amazing and just gets better with each book (as do all of her books) but Pretty Reckless just blew me away. This starts the series off with a bang.
“There is nothing more poetically inspiring Than loving the right person At the wrong place At the wrong time”
I found myself feeling everything along with these characters. I was so captivated by this book. Every time I wasn’t reading I was thinking about it and wanting to get back to reading, until I was finally able to sit down and devour this story. Because that’s the only way you can read this book. You won’t want to put it down.
Daria is such a B in the beginning I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to connect to her, but boy was I wrong. Daria is actually one of my favorites characters now. Getting to see her development through this book was fantastic. She grows so much throughout this story.
“War is a universal language. Christian, Jew, Buddhist, or a Muslim. Beautiful or ugly. Rich or Poor. They’re about to find out that it is especially vicious when you’re the underdog.”
Penn also surprised me little bit too. He wasn’t exactly what I expected him to be either. But damn do I love him. 😉
And boy these two together, was so hot and explosive!
I absolutely loved this book, the characters, the plot, everything about it. Leigh’s writing is like coffee to me, I can never get enough.
If you love hot, steamy, angsty romance, that’s going to hit you right in the heart. You absolutely need to pick this one up. L.J. Shen is a genius with words.
I absolutely can’t wait for Vaughn and Knight’s stories. I’m so pumped for them! Knowing Leigh, they’re going to be even more intense, and I am so ready.
“We are so much stronger than we think we are. But sometimes, we go through decades without having to be tested. The thing about life is, it always hits us. No one leads a charmed life. Even the blonde, gorgeous, picture-perfect, popular rich girl harbors secrets. Even the football captain. Even the rich mother of two who married her hot millionaire ex-student. The Ballet prodigy. Everyone’s got a story, and we all have chapters we’d rather not read aloud.”
Frenemies to Lovers
I didn’t think L.J Shen could out do herself from the original Hotholes from All Saints High but she blew it out of the park with the newer generation of the TotHoles ( The Hotholes spawn ). Pretty Reckless is so much more than an enemy to lovers romance! It’s about two kids from different sides off the track that have so much in common but hate each other also.
You would think from the outside looking in Daria has the perfect life. Her father Jamie Followhill is one of the original Hotholes and her mom Melody is a ballet teacher. Daria family can provide her with whatever her heart desires but her mom is lacking in one department.
Penn is the kid from the wrong side of the tracks and has been dealt a very $h!try hand in life. He has so much anger and hate but at the same time so much love to give.
Daria and Penn cross paths at the tender age of fourteen and there is an immediate attraction they are to young to understand. Bad things are done and hurtful and cruel words are hurled at each other over years. They have become the best Frenemies without knowing it.
Daria and Penn’s story is full of angst, drama and twist and turns you never saw coming. You will feel all the emotions and maybe even cry and get agnry. Their journey together was both ugly and beautiful. I highly recommend you one-click this read!
My obsession for this generation is ten fold. I am deliriously excited to have started this new series with the totholes and can’t wait to continue reading every single one of these characters journey.
In Pretty Reckless we get the story of Daria, a spoiled rich girl who thinks she owns the world and everyone caters to her. But at home she feels completely different. She’s a shell of a person, thinks one way but feels another. She’s breaking in the inside and it’s not a pretty sight.
Penn comes in the picture as the boy that lives on the wrong side of the tracks. He falls for Daria the moment he lays eyes on her, but he becomes reckless when one bad thing happens and the finger is pointed at Daria, then hatred consumes him, revenge becomes his number one priority.
I found myself addicted to these characters from the moment I started on the first page until the very end.
Shen is one hell of a great writer and I can’t wait to get more beautiful, complex and intriguing stories about these beautiful boys and girls.
Oh. My. Marx!!! That may sound like an odd exclamation to you, but once you find yourselves touched by all things Pretty Reckless, you’ll realize the significance of it. This All Saints High series starter is one of the most anticipated reads for this year, and for good reason. This is, after all, a spin-off of L.J. Shen’s much-loved and highly acclaimed Sinners of Saint series, with the next generation–aka the spawn–of the couples from the original series. As you can tell from the series title itself, these are set in high school, but this is so not young adult (YA) in terms of theme even though most of the characters do fall under that age group. Book one has a more new adult (NA) feel to it, one that I suspect will carry over throughout, but regardless of which sub-genre you choose to classify this under, this is, very simply put, one of the best reads you’ll have the privilege of experiencing. Prepare to be awed.
The men and women from Sinners of Saint are truly in a class all their own, but based on what I saw in this All Saints High series starter, it looks like the boys and girls here are set to give the “older” generation a run for their money. I know it’s been said that revenge is best served cold, but in the case of Penn and Daria, well, revenge turned out to be scorchingly hot. These two and their story highlighted that sometimes, you hate the ones you love and you love the ones you hate. There is, after all, a very thin line between the two emotions and Daria and Penn certainly had no qualms traipsing along and over it time and again. There was this thrum of almost palpable-like energy whenever these two were on the page, and turning my attention away from whatever was going on was an exercise in futility. L.J. Shen has, once again, delivered, and Pretty Reckless sets the bar high. Five-plus stars.
Pretty Reckless is the bully romance we’ve all been waiting for, and LJ Shen executes it FLAWLESSLY.
*takes a deep breath* *wipes away the tears* all the goddamn feels man
I was completely captivated and immersed in this hate story, Penn intrigued me from that first encounter and Daria’s loneliness ate at my heart. It’s the kind of classic LJ Shen book we all love so hard, the kind that feels like physical heart ache to read but that completes us and gives us all the bookworm joy and hope and LIFE. Admittedly, I don’t know how to function now because the book did this crazy thing: it ran out of pages. What am I meant to do with my life now? Book hangover here I come.
Beautifully written with stunning character development and twists you just will not see coming! I can’t wait for the next All Saints book now! Come on, LJ!!!!
I don’t know what I was expecting from this book but it certainly wasn’t that story! A flowery romance it wasn’t but what it was was another fascinating study into the troubled minds of our favourite Todos Santos families.
I thought Daria was the most troubled character in the story then I realised that she was just one person amongst a sea of angst and heartbreak. What we initially witness in relation to Daria’s behaviour is merely the tip of the iceberg and as the story progresses you come to see why she is the way she is and how her perfect life was torn down around her.
This is a really gritty, challenging story to read but it is fast paced, well written and captivating, despite the depravity, abuse, and bullying at its core. It’s strange to say that you could love such a book but if you put your sensibilities aside, you will be able to enjoy the story for what it is, troubled youngsters fighting to understand their minds and bodies. Whoever said growing up was easy, it certainly isn’t in Todos Santos.
This book is intense. I mean it will keep you attention from beginning to end. I couldn’t put this book down cause I needed to know what happened next. Penn and Daria come from different worlds but it doesn’t stop them from falling for each other. They have some things that come up that keep it from being a happy relationship. You see when you have priveleged kids who grow up with money, they have more secrets and issues then you’d ever think. Daria and her friends have so many secrets that they think hurting and bringing the others down will make them feel better. This is when things get interesting. Penn and his friends fall to temptation and feel the pain of it. They know they aren’t going to the big colleges like Daria’s friends. That doesn’t stop them from doing the right thing though. This book is crazy addicting and very very hard to put down.
Damn, damn, dammmnnn!!! 5 big whopping tator tothole stars! PSA for those who have been living under a rock or a deserted island: Read this book.
I have only ever read a novella by this author before which I enjoyed, so I was interested to see what a full size novel by them would be like to read. I feel that this was just an ok story particularly as it just doesn’t stand out amongst other books that I have read in this genre. The characters of Penn and Daria became pretty annoying at times throughout the story and I really didn’t connect with either of them. The storyline has pretty much been done to death, with the rich girl wanting the poor boy from the wrong side of town and the poor boy toying with her emotions. It really does have the mean girls vibe too which i’m so over. Yes the writing was good as in it was an easy to read book but the plot just didn’t live up to the expectation I had after seeing what a popular author L.J Shen is. I’m afraid this book really just wasn’t for me.
This was the first book I have read by this author…but I’ll be reading more soon!!!
Daria has a chip on her shoulder and doesn’t back down to anyone. She is the queen b and ok with it.
When Penn comes back into the picture will he see her for who she really is? Or will there be too many differences and bad blood for them?
This book had you rooting for Daria to find her peace and over come her obstacles. Penn is a great character that you keep wanting more of. I look forward to reading more in this series.
So unique. So well-written. So much angst. Nothing could have made me put it down. Not an earthquake, not a tsunami, not a tornado. If you loved Vicious, you’ll love Pretty Reckless. It’s L.J. Shen at her finest.

LJ Shen knows her way around the bad boys. I simply can’t get enough of them.
Enemies to lovers is one of my top jams. These two oozed all kinds of hate and angst. There was a lot going on, there was never a dull moment. There were some really good parts and some I didn’t understand why they were in the story. I do have to admit that Daria really didn’t grow on me until the end. But overall, I devoured this in one sitting and I can’t wait to read more about the other kids.
“Love is so contaminated. It tarnishes all that is beautiful and corrupts the soul. Love is so much uglier than hate because when you hate, you’re not confused. When you’re in love, you’re dumb.”
Do you know why I read romance novels? Do you know why I go batshit crazy over the love between two characters? Do you know why romance novels seem to make me so excited? Let me tell you. Romance novels for me, arouse my soul. Romance novels take me to an unforgettable journey of love with bumps and great obstacles. Romance novels open my heart to endless stories of sweet, sour, bitter, deadly and unorthodox. You become a slave to them. You become captivated. Romance novels like PRETTY RECKLESS. My goodness, my heart is SOARING. My soul is HEAVY. I can’t remember my own name after reading one of the best books of 2019. I am SPEECHLESS. Sometimes you read books that melt your heart. Sometimes you read books that steals every part of you. Sometimes you read books that transport you to another world. Pretty Reckless by L.J. Shen is truly the best thing on earth.
With a clever plot and spectacular writing, Pretty Reckless is the sensational first book in the All Saints High series that made my heart and soul race. A fantastically layered story that titillates the mind. A heart pummeling story that gives goosebumps and butterflies. I felt the butterflies in my stomach. I felt every word in the book coursing through my body. I felt the passion between the characters coursing through my veins. Wow, I am in awe. Wow, I am breathless. Wow, I am utter amazed. The brilliant writing. The fiery characters. The smashing story. L.J. Shen absolutely 100% delivered. Mouth Watering storyline. Heart Raising. Heart Melting. Pretty Reckless is a soul gripping masterpiece that told a story of hate and love. A story of teenage angst. A story with an enemies to lovers trope that burned. Burned my heart. Scorched my soul. A story that will take you an emotional roller coaster. You will cry. You will laugh. You will rage. You will swoon. You will smile. Pretty Reckless gave me the sweetest touches and the emotional turmoil that hit deeply inside me. L.J. Shen is a queen. She keeps giving me stories that make you high. She gives her whole heart with her stories, She weaves magic in her stories and writing that keeps me spellbound. Thank you L.J. Shen for a breathtaking story. Pretty Reckless absolutely shined.
L.J. Shen writes amazing asshole alphas. You can’t help but fall in love with them with their bad boy vibes and assholey ways. (Hahaha, assholey. That’s a new world). Penn and Daria brought out my inner teenagers. Explosive chemistry. Sexy love-hate relationship that made me lose my mind and heart. Penn and Daria are truly my spirit animals. I adored them. I fully lived in their love, ups and downs, tragedies and pain. A rich Queen B + a poor football jock equals flames. Inextinguishable flames.
You thought the Hotholes were trouble. Well, you are going to meet their spawns, the Totholes. They are cockier, rule All Saints High with a vengeance, assholey, rich and more trouble you can imagine. Buckle, Todos Santos will never be same.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

OH MY GOD.
OH.
MY.
GOODNESS.
Is it too early to say that I have found the best book of 2019? Well, maybe it is, but I can very-very-very honestly say that this book is a MASTERPIECE. Like this, with capital letters.
HOLY HELL.
Okay, I need to put myself together to write this review. Or even to write a proper sentence without too much capslock and swearing. To be honest, it is harder a lot than I thought it would be.
So, I have finished reading Pretty Reckless a few days ago and I am still under the spell of Daria and Penn. And Knight. And Vaughn. And the Hotholes. Gosh, I love these characters to pieces. I tell the following sentence to everyone I talk about this book: DADDY JAIME IS THE BEST. Honestly, I didn’t event think that it would be possible to love a character that much. But I will tell you everything about him later.
Moreover, I already want to reread this novel. Like, a hundred times. I just can’t get enough of these characters. I already miss them so much. I miss them so much that I started to use Audible and now I’m listening to the audio versions of these books. I’m currently listening to Scandalous (third book in Sinners of Saint series) and OMGOMGOMGOMG THIS IS PHENOMENAL. The narrators are freaking amazing. Just as the story. Now, I am even more excited for the next All Saints High books.
Leigh, you are a queen. The Hotholes and the Totholes in one book? Too much hotness and sexiness. This book totally ruined me for my next reads. I don’t really mind. Just gimme more.
Guys, Pretty Reckless is a MUST READ. A VERY MUST READ. If you haven’t read it yet, just do it, what are you waiting for? Pro tip: If you haven’t read Sinners of Saint, you should do it too. If you read it before All Saints High (basically, it it the spin-off of Sinners of Saint) you will get the whole picture and it is much more enjoyable. And honestly? Who want to miss out on the Hotholes? Trust me, you don’t want to.
“Not to be impolite, but you guys bore me to death. Cole, go tell Vaughn to come here.”
Busy scanning the room for Luna, Knight’s neck is still cranned as he answers her.
“Damn.” He pats the pockets of his jeans, then checks the pockets of his golden Gucci jacket. “I can’t find it.”
“Can’t find what?” Esme blinks.
“The memo where I started taking orders from your sorry ass.”
Dear readers, this book is EPIC. I know this book will be phenomenal. Every single L. J. Shen book is phenomenal. But Pretty Reckless takes the meaning of phenomenal to a whole new level.
Let’s just talk a little bit about that cover. Just a tiny bit. OMG I’m still obsessed with it. When I first saw it, I instantly fell in love with it. IT IS PURE PERFECTION. I just can’t get over it. And then Leigh showed us the alternate cover and ahhh… Honestly, she has one of the best covers ever. The original cover gives me all the Sinners of Saint vibes, and the alternate one reminds me the cover of Defy. I ADORE BOTH. I would love to have both.
This book was my most anticipated release since I know that there will be a spin-off to Sinners of Saint. I couldn’t wait to read it, and with every single teaser, excerpt, quote and basically everything related to Pretty Reckless, Leigh made me more and more and more curious. And beside making me so freaking excited for this novel, I couldn’t stop making teasers. (The ones you see while reading my review are mine.) And after reading it? I am not disappointed. At all. This book is very much worth the wait and I am pretty sure that all book in this series will worth the wait. (However, I would be more than happy if she released the next one soon. Until that day, I will probably reread this one like a thousand times.)
“Sucks to be you.” There’s no menace in my voice.
She shrugs.
“So why are you here?”
“Because it sucks to be me, too.”
Because it sucks less when we’re together even though I should hate you.
Let’s talk a little bit about the Hotholes. OMG I am still in love with all of them. I love that they are so close to each other, they are all amazing fathers and friends. Jaime is still super wonderful, I love that he is so pretective and caring and wants to help as much as possible and as much as he can. Vicious, Dean and Trent are still super super super mindblowing. Oh I just wanted to see a little their wifes too, that would have been awesome, but I was so happy that we could meet them again. Can’t wait for the next books. And I am so super excited to see how Trent will react to the fact that Luna is interested in a guy. Can’t wait to read it.
Oh, I almost forgot to write about Penn. Well, all you need to know is that Leigh gave us another imperfectly perfect book boyfriend. I really hope that he and Daria will appear in the next novels too, they are so super good together. They are so amazing together.
And now, let’s talk a little bit about the Totholes. OMG GUYS THEY ARE THE BESTS. I have already talked about Daria, so let’s move on. One more thing before I go on, she is an amazing heroine. Probably one of my biggest favourites. L. J. Shen surprised us in the best way possible. And I an really thankful for that.
One of the biggest question before the release of Pretty Reckless was that who is Luna’s love interest. Well, in some scenes we can see her with a guy (I’m not saying who is he), and it was kinda surprising for me. But if you ask me, it is still a little bit uncertain. But Leigh said that after reading this book we will know it, so maybe he is who he is? I don’t know. Everything can change. She also said the she will bring us some news at the end of May, and then we will know everything. So I guess we just have to wait. It’s only the 1st day of May but I already want it to end. 😀
Luna is still that mysterious girl, but I already feel that I will love her story and that it will be very special. Knight is that tipical playboy, but I think there is a lot more behind that. I think he will be a knight in a shining armor. I am so super excited for his story. Vaughn is also that mysterious type, and he made me laugh so many times (read the quote after this paragraph), and also, he made me cry once. So yeah, I really want to read his book too, which, according to Goodreads, will be the next one. Knight and Vaughn’s friendship is so special, I loved every moment of it, and I can’t wait to see more of it.
“That’s some reverse psychology Mean Girls shit right there.” Knight points at me with a piece of carrot and pops it into his mouth.
Via gazes at him under her lashes, all doe-eyed and ready to charm his pants off. “And you are?”
“Not interested,” he deadpans.
I smile inwardly, bursting with happiness. Knight is loyal to a fault. Vaughn, too. Rumor has it, when she smiled at her in the hallway earlier, he breezed past her, and drawled, “You haven’t earned the right to talk to me yet. Try again in two months.”
Taking everything into account, I don’t even know what else should I say. I pretty much said everything I wanted above. But just to repeat it, guys, go and read this book. It is extremely amazing, inspiring, heartbreaking, mindblowing, so angsty, so adorable, so everything. I am obsessed with this story and these characters. They own me. I am addicted to this story and these characters. Thank you so much, I don’t need rehab. I just need more All Saints High books. Just gimme more.
Six stars. The end.
